Periodicity ++ Pattern Release

I am happy to announce the release of the quilt pattern Periodicity today.  You can now find the pattern as a digital download in my pattern shop (digital and print versions) and on Etsy shop.

Periodicity was originally published as a quilt of the month for the Modern Quilt Guild.  It is a graphic design in a lap size that is quick finish using strip piecing. 

Many thanks to:

• Robert Kaufman for the Kona Cotton solids in Storm, Acid Lime, and Breakers  
• The Warm Company for the Warm & White batting.
• Aurifil for the piecing and quilting thread.

For the quilting, I wanted to pick a quilting pattern that gave the quilt texture but did not take away from the design or the colors.  I decided to quilt rows of loops that looked like continuous cursive "e" using matching thread colors for each fabric.   I used 50 wt Aurifil thread in 2785 (dark blue), 2810 (turquoise), and 2115 (bright yellow) for the quilting.  This meant a ton of tying off and burying threads, but I think I hope that the effect was worth it :)

Teaching at QuiltCon 2020

I am very excited to be teaching again at the upcoming QuiltCon 2020 in Austin, Texas!

DES100 & DES103 EQ FOR BEGINNERS 

Are you new to Electric Quilt 8 and don’t know where to start? You can leave your pencil and graph paper behind when you learn the basic functions and explore the versatility of EQ8 with this beginner workshop. We’ll cover how to navigate the block and quilt worktables, use library blocks and fabrics, create your own blocks, and build a quilt top with the blocks using different block settings, colors, fabrics, sashing, borders, and more. Students must bring their own laptop computers with EQ8 already installed.

DES200 & DES211 ALTERNATE GRIDS IN EQ8 

Learn how to use the Custom Set feature of EQ8 to create quilt top designs with different sized blocks, sashing, and/or negative space to yield alternate grid designs in this workshop. This is a hands-on intermediate EQ8 class that requires students to have a basic understanding of EQ8. Students should be able to navigate the program well and must bring their own laptop computers with EQ8 software already installed and activated.

DES209 & DES212 SERENDIPITY BLOCKS IN EQ8 

Looking for ways to create interesting and new blocks using EQ8? Electric Quilt has a special set of Serendipity functions of Frame, Tilt, Merge, Clip & Flip, Shrink & Flip, Kaleidoscope, and Fancy Star Blocks that can create new and interesting blocks for your quilt designs. This an intermediate EQ8 class that assumes that students have a basic understanding of EQ8 and can navigate the program well. This is a handson computer class, and students must bring their own laptop computers with EQ8 already installed.

DES011 SUBTRACTING FOR MINIMALISM 

Subtracting for minimalism is a combination lecture and hands-on workshop that explores taking away elements from a full quilt design to create a minimalist pattern. We will begin by showing sample quilts made using the subtracting for minimalism technique, then the method will be taught using both computer and hand drawn approaches. Students will practice the method by creating their own hand drawn minimalist quilt designs and then learn how to develop the designs into a plan for an actual quilt. This is a no sew class.

Free Quilt Pattern ++ Rock and Roll Baby Quilt

Hi Everyone! As an OLFA Creator, I had the opportunity to create a new tutorial for the OLFA blog for June and I am happy to be able to share it with you!

**Update** When the OLFA blog was relaunched, this and many other tutorials were lost so I have republished the tutorial for the Rock & Roll Baby Quilt on my blog right here.

My good friends were going a baby boy due in a few months (they actually had him early last week!) and I wanted to make them a fun baby quilt for their shower.

Rock & Roll is very beginner friendly and a great way to use up scraps using the two at a time half square triangle technique. The blocks form X’s and O’s for lots of hugs and kisses.

The finished quilt measures 40 1/2″ x 52 1/2″. I used straight lines in the pieced sections and an open swirl design in the background. Aurifil 50wt thread in a light gray/blue to matched the background fabric and blended in great with all of the prints.

I hope you give the pattern a try!

Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup - May 2019

I have been busy organizing the sponsors for the upcoming Mosaic Mystery Quilt Along which kicks off on Thursday, July 4th (you can find out all of the information about the quilt along here), but I did find time to make a few small finishes.

As an Aurifil Artisan, I had the opportunity combine some of the new Anna Maria Horner fabrics along with Aurifil thread.  Each of us received 3 fat quarters and a coordinating Aurifil spool.  Here were my supplies:

I decided that these saturated, large scale prints would work perfectly in cathedral window pincushions (and for those that know me well, you know I have a little obsession making them :)

I made three pincushions, so each print was used as the center print for one of the pincushions and the outer print for another pincushion.  I did wind up using a white Aurifil thread for the topstitching to the white framing fabric. This one was my favorite of the bunch.
