The pattern is available now and the quilt along kicks off on January 5th.  It is the perfect quilt to start the new year making!  The pattern is pre-cut and scrap friendly and contains baby, throw, twin, and queen sizes.

I had such fun rendering Board and Batten in all sorts of colors and prints and with dark backgrounds and light backgrounds to give you ideas on which fabric combinations you may wish to use.

Being that the pattern is so pre-cut and scrap friendly, you might already have the perfect fabric waiting in your sewing room. If not, then you can shop some Black Friday sales :)

Board & Batten - "ele" Quilting Design

Does your quilt have a regular, repeating pieced grid?  Then I have a great quilting design for you!

When I am deciding what quilting design to use on a quilt and I decide that an all over design works best, I look at the piecing of the quilt.  If the quilt has a piecing grid (meaning that there is the same size block or unit repeating across the quilt), then I try to use this grid in my quilting.

This grid keeps the quilting spaced and consistent.  Plus there is no marking :)

Board & Batten has a grid design (each square is either a solid fabric or a half square triangle) so I used this grid to create a fun and quick quilting design.

"ele" Quilting Design

The "ele" quilting design I used for Board & Batten runs vertically in the quilt top, but was actually quilted in my machine left to right like a typewriter.

I started the design off the left hand side of the quilt (so no thread burying, yippee) and quilted the following pattern:

1. Quilted a cursive "ele" in the first block.
2. Crossed downward through the grid seam intersection.
3. Quilted an upside down "ele" in the second block (the second block is one block to the right and one block down from the first block)
4. Crossed upwards through the grid seam intersection.

I continued this pattern all the way to the other side of the quilt and ended off the quilt (again no thread burying).  Then, like a typewriter, I moved the quilt to start the next row of quilting.

Here is a short video showing the quilting across a section of the quilt.

My quilting is far from perfect, but always aiming for the seam intersections kept the spacing of the design consistent and look more even then it really is.

Here is how the quilting looked in the finished quilt:

I love this design due to the impact this quilting gives with no marking and no thread burying.  The next time you are trying to figure out how to quilt your quilt, if your design has a grid, try something like this :)

Board & Batten Pattern Launch (and QAL)

This is the perfect time to get your copy of my newest pattern launching today, Board & Batten, to be ready for the quilt along starting on January 5th.  You can get all of the information about Board and Batten here.

You can use the Thanksgiving sales to get any fabrics you might need for the quilt. I will be posting about some kit options from the Fat Quarter Shop on Black Friday the 25th.

Thank you so much for your support throughout the year!

Board and Batten Pattern Release

It's pattern release day for Board & Batten!  I am very excited to time this launch with my Thanksgiving Sale.  The Board and Batten quilt along will kick off in the new year!

Board and Batten is a super fun and quick pattern based on half square triangles to make a modern herringbone-like design.

The pattern is perfect for your pre-cuts or scraps you have in your sewing room being charm pack, layer cake, fat quarter bundle, and scrap friendly.

Board and Batten contains instructions for baby, throw, twin, and queen sizes.

If you love half square triangles (HST), then this quilt is for you!  And we are going to have a super fun quilt along kicking off on January 5th.

FABRICS & MATERIALS

For my cover version of Board & Batten I used a variety of Bella Solids in blues, turquoises, and limes against a background of Feather.  I love the scrappy goodness.

I used my favorite Warm & White batting by the Warm Company and light cream 50 wt Aurifil thread for the quilting.

For the quilt along, I am planning on using Honey by Alexia Abegg for Ruby Star Society along with a Bella Navy background.

I will be sharing a bunch of additional renderings and kit options for the pattern on Black Friday (so you can take advantage of the fabric sales if you would like).

ABOUT THE QUILTING

I wanted to pick a quilting design that added texture but did not away from the piecing or bright prints.  When I have a quilt design that is in a grid, I try to see if I can use the grid (to minimize any marking that needs to be done).  For this quilt I used a cursive "ele" in each block.

I will be posting (including a short video) on how I quilted this quilt on Wednesday (11/23).

PATTERN DETAILS

Board and Batten is beginner friendly and contains baby, throw, twin, and queen sizes.  The pattern is pre-cut and scrap friendly with instructions for using charm packs, layer cakes, fat quarters, and scraps.

Once you make a Board and Batten quilt of your own, you can share it via social media using the hashtag #BoardandBattenQuilt and #BoardandBattenQAL during the quilt along.

In both my pattern shop (digital and print versions) and Etsy (digital version), during my Thanksgiving Sale, you can buy two patterns and get one free.

MANY THANKS

I would like to thank Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl for her amazing tech editing skills.  I would also like to thank the Warm Company for the Warm & White batting (my favorite!), and Aurifil for the thread.

Tea Leaves in Quilter's Planner 2023

The Quilter's Planner 2023 is now available and I am very excited to show you my contribution to the planner, the Tea Leaves pattern.

Photo by Kitty Wilkin (@nightquilter) for Quilter' Planner 2023

I designed Tea Leaves using the traditional bear claw block in a more modern setting to look like falling leaves.  The throw sized quilt is fat quarter friendly and is written at the confident beginner level.

The fabrics in the quilt are Fabric from the Attic by Giucy Giuce for Andover Fabrics along with some Century Solids.  I also used my favorite batting, Warm & White from the Warm Company and Aurifil thread for the piecing and quilting.

Here is the picture of the Fabric from the Attic collection, it is one of my favorites and I have actually made three quilts using these fabrics now.  I checked and it is still available on Etsy, I found these three listings for the collection: one, two, three.

I love the bright colors and Kitty's photography is always wonderful.

The planner is available right here.  The planner has multiple cover options, Sunday/Monday start days for the calendar, and many options for the weekly calendar portion of the planner.

I went with the rainbow cover, Sunday start, and vertical calendar design.

Which cover is your favorite? Remember you can get your Quilter's Planner 2023 right here.

Spinning Stars Printed Templates Now Available

Spinning Stars - Printed Templates

I asked a number of quilters what some of their biggest pain points about paper piecing were and the number one answer was printing or photocopying the paper templates.

So to help with that, I am happy to announce the availability of printed paper templates for my best selling paper pieced pattern, Spinning Stars.

The printed templates contain the 54 sheets needed to make the lap size version of Spinning Stars along with 2 extra of each template type.

The paper is regular copy paper, my favorite paper to paper piece with. I did look at the special paper piecing paper (which is more like thin unprinted newspaper) but was unable to find a source that could print the templates economically.

Right now, the templates are on sale for only $12 plus shipping (from the regular $15 price). The shipping cost is $8.00 for USPS Priority Mail and any additional patterns, books, etc ship for free.

You can get your templates here

Spinning Stars - Pattern + Templates Bundle Special

If you purchase the Spinning Stars pattern, either printed or digital, and the template packet, you will receive $4 off the bundle.  This is addition to the templates being on an introductory sale ($3 off right now).  This bundle discount will show up automatically in your cart, there is no coupon code.

Note: If you already own the Spinning Stars pattern and would like to purchase the templates, you can use the coupon code "TEMPLATES" for $4 off the price of the templates so you can take advantage of the special bundle pricing too.

Please let me know what you think of this option and if these templates are well received, then I would be happy to offer template packets for other paper pieced patterns.

Thanks!

Melodic Mystery ++ More Flying Geese

Let's Make More Flying Geese!

I am sorry for all of the flying geese, I promise that this is the last of them :)

Welcome to the November set of instructions for the Melodic Mystery Quilt! The Melodic Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that runs from July 2022 through April 2023 with a set of directions revealed the first Thursday of every month.

There is plenty of time to join in on the quilt along, instructions are published monthly so there is plenty of time to catch up! You can find all of the information about the Melodic Mystery, including schedule, past instructions, links to the Facebook group, sneak peek, and more in the Main Melodic Mystery Quilt Page.

Easy to Print PDF Instructions

Now that the Melodic Mystery quilt along has ended, you can find a easy to print, full version of the pattern for sale in my pattern shop.

More Flying Geese Units

Combine 18 fabric B squares 7 ¼" x 7 ¼" and 72 bg squares 3 ⅞" x 3 ⅞" to make 72 B/bg flying geese units 3 ½" x 6 ½" using the No Waste Flying Geese method.

1.  Place 2 of the bg squares 3 ⅞ x 3 ⅞" on opposite corners of a fabric B square 7 ¼" x 7 ¼" right sides together.

The bg squares will overlap in the middle of the fabric B square.

Use a removable marking device to make a line diagonally across the bg squares (solid line).

2.  Sew a scant ¼" seam on both sides of the marked line (dotted lines) and then cut on the marked line (solid line).

3.  Press the seams towards the bg squares. (You will have two of these intermediate units.)

For each intermediate unit, place a bg square 3 ⅞ x 3 ⅞" on the corner of the fabric B square right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line on the bg square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on both sides of the marked line (dotted lines).

4.  Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards the bg squares.
Each set of 1 fabric B square and 4 bg squares will yield 4 B/bg flying geese.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 to make a total of 72 B/bg flying geese units.

Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim blocks to 3 ½" x 6 ½" if necessary, making sure there is ¼" between the point of the goose triangle and the edge of the unit.

Many thanks to the generous sponsors of the Melodic Mystery Quilt!

Any questions? Leave them in a comment below or post them to our Facebook group page. I look forward to seeing everyone's fabric selections. The next set of instructions will be published on the first Thursday of next month.
