Marigold Mystery Quilt ++ Block 3

Welcome to the third set of sewing instructions for the Marigold Mystery Quilt!!

Let's make some more blocks this month!  For the October instructions for the Marigold Mystery quilt along we are making Square in a Square, Uneven Nine-Patch, and Shoo Fly blocks.

The Marigold Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that will run from July 2026 through March 2027 to make a throw sized quilt about 60 ½" x 70 ½" (or 60" x 73 1/2") with a set of instructions posted the first Thursday of every month.  The quilt pattern is at an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).

The directions and all of the other information relate dot the mystery quilt can always be found on the Marigold Mystery Home Page.  You can find all of the pdf downloads in the Marigold Mystery Shop Page.

Square in a Square Block

FABRICS TO CUT

Prints
10 squares* 3" x 3" - cut 2 squares each from 5 different prints
5 squares 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" - from a variety of prints

* If you like to oversize your pieces for SiaS blocks, increase the cut size by 1/4".

SQUARE IN A SQUARE (SiaS) BLOCKS

Press all seams open or towards the triangles.

1. Cut all 10 print squares 3" x 3" in half once diagonally to make a total of 20 triangles.

2. Center a triangle 3" x 3" along a first side of a  square 3 3/8" x 3 3/8".  Sew along the edge with a scant 1/4" seam (shown as a dotted line) and press the seam towards the triangle.

Tip: You can press the square in half vertically and horizontally and all of the triangles in half to help center the triangles on the square. (Fold lines shown in pink.)

3. Sew a second matching triangle on the side of the square opposite to the first side, pressing the seam towards the triangle. Note: you can sew both of these triangles on then press instead of pressing after each addition.

4. Continue by sewing third and fourth matching triangles onto the square, pressing the seams towards the triangles, to make a square in a square (SiaS) unit.

5. Trim off the tabs (dog ears) formed by the sewn on triangles and square the unit to 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" (if necessary) making sure there is 1/4" between the corner of the inner square and the outer sides of the unit.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 to make a total of 5 SiaS blocks 4 1/2" x 4 1/2".
