QuiltCon Together - 2021

The Modern Quilt Guild decided to move the 2021 QuiltCon show online to protect the safety of of teachers and participants. They made this decision so early to ensure that the online QuiltCon would be the best it could be.

Registration for QuiltCon Together is now open for MQG members (registration opens for non-members in August) and you can find the course catalog right here.

I will be teaching four different mini workshops (which are recorded workshops with at least 35 min of recorded content and exercises you can watch anytime during QuiltCon with an optional live small group discussion).

DES011 - EQ8 for Beginners - Mini Workshop

Are you new to Electric Quilt 8 and don’t know where to start? You can leave your pencil and graph paper behind when you learn the basic functions and explore the versatility of EQ8 with this beginner workshop. We’ll cover how to navigate the block and quilt worktables, use library blocks and fabrics, create your own blocks, and build a quilt top with the blocks using different block settings, colors, fabrics, sashing, borders, and more. Students must have EQ8 already installed and activated on their computer.

DES012 - Alternative Grids in EQ8 - Mini Workshop

Learn when and how to use the Custom Set feature of EQ8 to create quilt top designs with different sized blocks, sashing, and/or negative space to yield alternate grid designs in this workshop. This is a hands-on intermediate EQ8 class that requires students to have a basic understanding of EQ8. Students must have the EQ8 software already installed and activated.

DES013 - Serendipity Blocks in EQ8 - Mini Workshop

Looking for ways to create interesting and new blocks using EQ8? Electric Quilt has a special set of Serendipity functions of Frame, Tilt, Merge, Clip & Flip, Shrink & Flip, Kaleidoscope, and Fancy Star Blocks that can create new and interesting blocks for your quilt designs. This an intermediate EQ8 class that assumes that students have a basic understanding of EQ8 and can navigate the program well. Students must have EQ8 already installed and activated.

DES014 - Modern Quilt Design Using EQ8 - Mini Workshop

Looking to design more modern quilts using EQ8 with features such as negative space, block scale, and improv-style blocks and quilts? This class will teach you how to render modern quilts using the Horizontal, On-Point, Horizontal/Vertical Strip, and Custom layouts, and which layout is the appropriate starting choice for each design. This an intermediate EQ8 class that assumes that students have a basic understanding of EQ8 and can navigate the program well. Students must have EQ8 already installed.

Are you planning on attending QuiltCon Together?  Which workshops and lectures did you sign up for?

Lattice Vines ++ New Pattern

I am very excited to announce that my newest quilt pattern, Lattice Vines is now available in my shop!

Lattice Vines is a lap sized quilt pattern with the blocks placed on-point (at an angle of 45 degrees) with sashing that forms a “lattice” around the blocks.  I would rate this as an intermediate level quilt, the blocks are easy to piece, but the on-point layout and sashing add a little level of difficulty.

For my version of Lattice Vines I used Bella Solids in White and Navy by Moda, a magenta Speckled print by Ruby Star Society, and a print from Rifle Paper Co for Cotton & Steel.

I loved the quilt top so much when I finished it that I decided to put a little extra time and effort into the quilting.  Using matching Aurifil 50 wt cotton threads in each section (yes, this made for a number of hours of burying thread ends) I quilted:
  • A figure 8 design in the white areas of the blocks.
  • Concentric swirls in the white setting triangles.
  • Bear claw swirls in the light blue areas.
  • Dense back and forth in the magenta areas.
  • Loose back and forth in the dark blue pieces.
  • Diagonal switch back in the blue floral areas.

I bound the quilt using the same Bella Solids in Navy to give the quilt a nice frame. For the backing, I used an older Tula Pink print I have had in my stash for a long time. It does not match the blue in the quilt top perfectly, but I think it goes pretty well. You can see some of the quilting better on the backside.

The pattern contains a coloring page so that you can test out different possible color combinations.  Here are some additional colorways of the quilt.

Would you like to make your own Lattice Vines?  It is on sale for an introductory price of $9 for only 5 days through Tuesday, July 14th.

You can combine this special price with a coupon code for even more savings.

Use the coupon code "TWOPATTERNS" for $2 off 2 patterns and "THREEPATTERNS" for $4 off 3 patterns.

Many, many thanks to Yvonne of Quilting Jetgirl for her spectacular tech editing skills!!  If you decide to make a Lattice Vines, please share your progress and finished pictures on social media #LatticeVinesQuilt and be sure to tag me @MeadowMistDesigns :)

Question - Would you maybe like to have this quilt pattern as a quilt along this fall?  We can make the quilt together and I can share some tips and tricks to make it easier to sew. Leave a comment if you might be interested in this.

Thanks!

Work- In-Progress Wednesday

I have not shared a work-in-progress Wednesday in a really long time.  Here is a little sneak peek into the sewing room to see what projects I am working on right now.

1.  Lattice Vines
Lattice Vines is all finished and ready to launch!  This is my newest design and will be released this Friday, July 10th.  My son helped me with the photo shoot and we were able to get it done and home less than 2 minutes before it started pouring :)

2.  Checkers
Checkers is another new pattern I am working on that still in the piecing stage.  I am in no rush with this quilt so it is nice to work on in between other projects.

3.  Morewood Mystery Quilt

My Morewood Mystery is actually already finished (I made it during the testing phase) so I want to get it basted and quilted before I decide to hang it in the closet and forget about it for many months.  Here is the backing I picked, a wide back from Tula Pink.

4.  English Trellis
Pat Sloan has a new fabric line called Morrison Park for Benartex coming out in September/October and she asked if I would make something to help highlight it.  Here is the fabric, I love the red, blue, pink, and orange combos.  I am just starting to cut the fabric to make a quilt called English Trellis.

I hope you enjoyed the little sneak peek into what I am working on :)

Remember, the only rule is that you have to keep the design completely to yourself as to not spoil anyone else's surprise.

Easy to Print Instructions - Each month, the instructions will be posted as a blog post on the Meadow Mist Designs blog.  Now that the Mystery Quilt has ended, you can find a easy to print, full version of the pattern for sale in my pattern shop.

And now without further ado....July's instructions...remember, you have an entire month to get your fabric, the next set of instructions comes out on Thursday, August 6th.

Fabric Requirements

The Morewood Mystery quilt is a lap sized quilt and contains 4 different fabrics plus a background fabric in the quilt top:

Fabric Selection Tips

  • It is suggested that a solid or a tone-on-tone print that reads as a solid be used for the background fabric.
  • Due to the finished fabric piece sizes and piecing methods for the quilt top, it is recommended that fabric prints used have a non-directional design.
  • Each of the fabrics may be made using scraps of similar colors instead of a single fabric if desired. Generally, the pieces within the quilt will be 6" x 6" or smaller.
  • Within the quilt, all of the A, B, C, and D fabrics are adjacent the background fabric, but none of the A, B, C, or D fabrics are next to each other.
  • In these instructions, the background is shown as white, but the quilt design looks very good with other colors and tones of background (light, medium, and dark) as long as the A-D fabrics have good contrast with the background color.
PATTERN NOTES:
  • Width of fabrics (WOF) for this pattern is assumed to be 40".
  • A scant ¼" (a thread width smaller than ¼") seam is to be used throughout the construction of the quilt unless otherwise instructed.
