Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup - January 2023

Welcome to January's Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup!

I have no big finish this month that I can share yet, but I do have three quilt tops finished and ready for basting (my least favorite quilting step so I am procrastinating).

My quilt tops are the Melodic Mystery (big design reveal Thursday!), a new quilt pattern called Olive & Hazel, and my Board & Batten quilt along version.

Ready for the party?

Here is a reminder of the party details:
  • The linky party will open at 12:01am EST on the last day of the month and will be open for 5 days, through the 4th at 11:59 pm EST.
  • For instructions on how to link up blog, Instagram, or pictures from your computer (new - there is now a way to just upload a picture without a web link) to the party, click here.
  • If linking a blog post, I ask that you please add a link back to the party.
  • Please visit at least 3 other links (and preferably leave comments) to share the love and celebration :)
I hope you join in by checking out the posts or linking your favorite finish of the month!

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

Board & Batten Quilt Along - Blocks Week 1

Everyone's half square triangles are looking great!  You can see everyone's progress on social media using #boardandbattenqal and in the MMD Facebook Group.

You also always find all of the information and links to the QAL at the main Board and Batten Page.

If you have sewn ahead and have the quilt top and/or finished quilt ready, you can email me a picture at MMDmysteryquilts@gmail.com at any time for the quilt parade coming in March.  When you email me, please let me know if you are outside the US as some of the prizes are US only and some are worldwide.

Board and Batten Weekly Instructions

I recorded a short 5 minute video showing the block and going over some tips and tricks for block assembly. You can find the video here (and if you enjoy it I would love if you subscribed to the YouTube channel, thanks!)

For the next two weeks, we are making our blocks.

To make my blocks I first sewed all of my print squares to the bg squares (rows 2 and 4) and then sewed the half square triangles together (for rows 1 and 3).

To make sure I had the orientation correct for the HST rows (note that it is different for rows 1 and 3) I laid out a pair of HST in the correct orientation so I could refer to it as I sewed.  I usually just randomly pair the HST up for about 90% of the pairs, grabbing them as I sew, then I take the last 10 or so pairs and pair them up before sewing to make sure I wind up with a good mix of colors.

I do suggest pressing all seams open within the block, I find that it makes the block flatter and the seams less bulky.  If you prefer to press seams to the side, I would alternate the pressing direction for each row.

Here are my blocks, I can't wait to see yours!

The Quilt in the Hat Pattern Release

It's pattern release day!  The Quilt in the Hat pattern is now available (with a limited time $9.25 intro price) as a digital, downloadable quilt pattern:

The Quilt in the Hat was actually one of my first quilt patterns and it earned its name from the Cat in the Hat fabric I used for the sample quilt.  The pattern was licensed to a fabric manufacturer for a number of years and now it is back, with a full revamp of the quilt pattern so that it has all new instructions and illustrations.

About the Pattern

The Quilt in the Hat is the perfect quilt pattern for a beginner or a quick finish for a more advanced quilter.  The pattern contains instructions for baby and lap sizes and is both fat quarter and 1/4 yard cut friendly.

Just 4 fat quarters and some background yardage makes a baby quilt!

Original Cat in the Hat Version

I made the original version of this quilt pattern using four 1/4 yard cuts of the Cat in the Hat prints which is how this pattern earned its name of the Quilt in the Hat :)  I used a large stipple on the quilt using gold thread for the quilting.

(Forgive the photography, my skills have improved since I made this quilt.)

Marmalade Version

The second version of the Quilt in the Hat was made by Trish of Notes of Sincerity using four of my favorite prints from the Marmalade collection by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics.  Trish did a wonderful job making the quilt and improving the pattern.

Art Gallery Version

My friend Bernie had a fabric shop called Needle and Foot which carried a beautiful variety of fabrics.  One year she had bloggers create custom bundles she carried in the shop.

I picked out some navy, blue, and mustard prints from Art Gallery Fabrics and was able to create this fun baby quilt out of them super quickly.  I used an allover swirl design for the quilting.

Board & Batten Quilt Along - Second Week of Half-Square Triangles

I have been enjoying seeing everyone's half square triangles for the Board & Batten quilt along!  You can see all of the fabric combinations and colorways on social media using #boardandbattenqal and in the MMD Facebook Group.

You also always find all of the information and links to the QAL at the main Board and Batten Page.

Board and Batten Weekly Instructions

This is the second week of making half-square triangles.  By next Wednesday you should have all of your HST sewn and trimmed to stay on schedule with the quilt along (but feel free to go at your own faster or slower pace).

My favorite way to do half-square triangles is to oversize them if possible (was not possible for me in this pattern because I was using charm squares) then trim using my HST Bloc-Loc Ruler (you can find the 6 1/2" version here on Amazon affiliate link).

I can't wait to see yours!

Questions?  You can leave them as a comment or email me at MMDmysteryquilts@gmail.com.

If you would like to join the quilt along but still need a copy of of the pattern, you can find Board and Batten:
