Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup - July 2019

Welcome to July's Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup!

My favorite finish for July is my Disappearing Oranges quilt I made as the July pattern of the month for the Modern Quilt Guild.  I created the design using my Subtracting for Minimalism technique (that I will be teaching again at QuiltCon this February).  The pattern is free to all MQG members and can be found here on the MQG website.

Many thanks to Hoffman fabric for the Indah Batik solids, The Warm Company for the Warm & White batting, and Aurifil thread for the thread for piecing and quilting the quilt.

If you attend QuiltCon 2020 in Austin, you will be able to see the quilt in person, it will be hanging in the Pattern of the Month special exhibit.

Ready for the party?

Here is a reminder of the party details:

Charity Birthday Sale!

Please join my in celebrating my birthday today and help out two wonderful organizations.

Today only, get 35% off everything in my Etsy shop and 100% of the profit will be donated to the Greenville Human Society and Greenville Animal Care.

This is a great way to grab a pattern or book from my shop you have been eyeing and give to worthy causes.

We adopted Reeses through Greenville Animal Care and Oreo through the Greenville Human Society last October as kittens.  Both organizations provide low cost or free spaying/neutering, great adoption programs, education to the community, and medical care to animals.  The groups are always in need of supplies (like cleaning supplies, rice, food, blankets, and toys) and I want to help as much as I can.

Here are my girls again...

Reeses                                      Oreo

My plan is to take my kids shopping for items on the organizations' wish lists, then deliver the goodies in person.  I think that it will be a great learning experience and fun for my children to be involved in the donation process.

Birthday Celebration Coming This Saturday!

My birthday is this Saturday and I want to celebrate with you!  Last year, I had such fun having a sale to raise money for the Greenville Zoo (I was able to donate $500) that I am going to repeat it this year.

On my birthday this Saturday, I will be having a 35% off sale in my Etsy shop and will donate 100% of the profit to the Greenville Human Society and Greenville Animal Care.

This is a great way to grab a pattern or book from my shop you have been eyeing and give to worthy causes.

Disappearing Oranges - MGQ Pattern of the Month for July

I am so happy to show you my newest quilt, Disappearing Oranges which is the July pattern of the month for the Modern Quilt Guild (free to all MQG members)!

You can find the pattern on the MQG website right here.

For quilters coming over from the MQG, welcome! I hope you have a chance to take a look around my little blog including some of my recent finishes and my fifth annual mystery quilt called the Mosaic Mystery quilt which just started a few weeks ago. You can also find me over on Instagram as MeadowMistDesigns.

Disappearing Oranges was made using my Subcontracting for Minimalism technique starting with an orange peel design.  I am excited to be teaching this technique again at QuiltCon 2020.

Many thanks to:

  • Hoffman Fabrics for the Indah Batik Solids
  • The Warm Company for the Warm & White batting
  • Aurifil for the thread for piecing and quilting

For the quilting, those that know me well know that I prefer to do free motion quilting over straight line quilting.  But looking at the design, I really thought that a cross-hatch pattern would be the right choice.  I used random spacing of the quilting lines (guiding off of previous stitched lines with different parts of my walking foot) to have spaces between ¼" to 1 ½".

I used a 50 wt white (2021) Aurifil thread for the quilting.  The thread was great for adding texture and not standing out too much on the high contrast dark blue and orange fabrics.

A fun light blue Me + You batik from Hoffman Fabrics completed the quilt as the backing.

I want to give a special thanks to Yvonne of Quilting Jetgirl for her super pattern review skills!!

Mosaic Mystery Quilt ++ My Fabrics

I am happy to share today the fabrics that I will be using for my version of the Mosaic Mystery quilt.  I am using all Painter's Palette solids by Paintbrush Studio Fabrics.

I had the opportunity to learn and try out these solids a few years back during a block hop for the New Quilt Bloggers group.  This brand of solids quickly became one of my favorite solids to work with. I would estimate the weight and feel of the fabric somewhere between a Kona and a Bella, a really nice weight and thickness.

Painter's Palette solids wash great, have a wonderful hand, and are one of the least fraying solids I have ever worked with. You can see all of the available colors here and PBS even has a chart showing matching Aurifil colors.

Paintbrush Studio Fabrics generously provided me with the fabrics I am using for the Mosaic Mystery quilt.  If you would like to make your quilt using Painter's Palette solids, you can find almost every color (plus a color card) available at Pineapple Fabrics.  The solids are only $6.99 per yard!

Fabric A - 134 Tomato

Fabric B - 049 Coral

Fabric C - 100 Aruba

Background - 000 White

Binding - 050 Cadet

Backing - 048 Pale Pink

The Mosaic Mystery quilt is just getting started so I hope you decide to join in!  All of the information about the quilt along can be found on the Mosaic Mystery Quilt page.  Remember, you can link up your fabric selections yesterday's post to win some great prizes.

Bear Creek Company is sponsoring a $50 gift certificate to their shop.

The Bear Creek Quilting Company started in 2011 as a family business based out of Lebanon, Oregon. Over the years they have grown and the online shop now has thousands of yards of fabric available, plus Aurifil thread, notions, and books. Bear Creek Quilting Company offers a flat shipping fee, quick shipping, and every order includes a surprise gift; everyone loves something exciting and free.

Bear Creek Quilt Company has put together some wonderful quilt kits for the quilt along.  You can click here to see all of the available kits (and check back often as new kits may be added as the current ones sell out).

Bear Creek Quilting Company has recently added a new category to their fabric selections, Buy the Bolt which offers larger cuts of fabric (2-7 yards). This offers a great deal to stock up on yardage that you love for quilt tops, backgrounds, and backings. You can find their selection of bolts right here.

Paintbrush Studio Fabrics is giving away a Fat quarter bundle of Painter's Palette Solids (US mailing addresses only).

Have you tried Paintbrush Studio Fabrics solids? They are called Painter's Palette Solids and they are one of my favorites. Their weight is between a Kona and a Bella. They wash great, have a wonderful hand, and are one of the least fraying solids I have ever worked with. You can see all of the available colors here and PBS even has a chart showing matching Aurifil colors.

I am using Painter's Palette Solids that Paintbrush Studio Fabrics generally provided in my version of the Mosaic Mystery quilt.  I will be posting about my fabrics tomorrow :)

Instructions

Now that the Mosaic Mystery Quilt has ended, you can find a easy to print, full version of the pattern for sale in my pattern shop.

And now without further ado....July's instructions...

Fabric Requirements

The Mosaic Mystery quilt is a lap sized quilt and contains 4 different fabrics in the quilt top:

Fabric Selection Tips

Within these quilt instructions, the following colors will be used to represent the fabrics:

  • It is suggested that a solid or a tone-on-tone print that reads as a solid be used for the background fabric.
  • Due to the finished fabric piece sizes and piecing methods for the quilt top, it is recommended that fabric prints used have a non-directional design.
  • Each of the fabric yardages above may be made using scraps of similar colors instead of a single fabric if desired.  Generally, the pieces within the quilt will be 6 ½" x 6 ½" or smaller.
  • Within the quilt, each of the fabrics A, B, and C are adjacent the background fabric, but none of the fabrics A, B, or C are next to each other.
  • In these instructions, the background is shown as white, but the quilt design looks very good with other colors and tones of background (light, medium, and dark) as long as the fabrics A, B, and C have good contrast with the background color.
  • You can use any fabric you would like for the border (it will be next to the background fabric and none of the fabrics A-C).  In the instructions, fabric A will be used for the border.

Fabric Kits
