Marigold Mystery Quilt ++ Block 1

Let's get sewing!  Welcome to the first set of sewing instructions for the Marigold Mystery Quilt!! 




Typically we cut our fabrics in August, but for this mystery quilt along we will be cutting and sewing each month.

We are making Dutchman's Puzzle Blocks and Eight Point Star Blocks this month.  Be sure to share your blocks in the FB group and on social media.


The Marigold Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that will run from July 2026 through March 2027 to make a throw sized quilt about 60 ½" x 70 ½" (or 60" x 73 1/2") with a set of instructions posted the first Thursday of every month.  The quilt pattern is at an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).

EASY TO PRINT INSTRUCTIONS

Dutchman’s Puzzle Block

FABRICS TO CUT

Prints

8 squares 5 3/8" x 5 3/8" of a variety of prints

Fabric A

32 squares 3" x 3"



FLYING GEESE UNITS

1. Place 2 fabric A squares 3" x 3" on opposite corners of a print square 5 3/8" x 5 3/8" right sides together. The fabric A squares will overlap in the middle of the print square.

Draw a line diagonally across the back of the fabric A squares (solid line).

2. Sew a scant ¼" seam on either side of the marked line (dotted lines) and then cut on the marked line (solid line).




3. Press seams towards the fabric A fabric. (You will have two of these intermediate units.)

For each intermediate unit, place a fabric A square 3" x 3" on the corner of the print triangle right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the fabric A square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on either side of the marked line (dotted lines).



4. Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards fabric A.

5. Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim the flying geese units to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2", making sure there is 1/4" between the point of the print triangle and the top edge of the unit.

One print square and 4 fabric A squares will yield 4 flying geese units 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".



6. Repeat to make a total of 32 flying geese units 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".


DUTCHMAN’S PUZZLE BLOCK ASSEMBLY

1. Sew together 2 matching print flying geese units 2 1/2" x 4 1/2", pressing the seam open or towards the top flying goose, to make a pair unit 4 1/2" x 4 1/2".




2. Repeat to make a total of 16 pair units.

3. Sew together 4 pair units (using a variety of prints), pressing the seams open, to make a Dutchman’s puzzle block 8 1/2" x 8 1/2".



4. Repeat to make a total of 4 Dutchman’s puzzle blocks.



Eight Point Star Block

FABRICS TO CUT


Prints

20 squares 3" x 3" - cut 4 squares each from 5 different prints
5 squares 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" of a variety of prints

Fabric A

5 squares 5 3/8" x 5 3/8"
20 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"


FLYING GEESE UNITS

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the print square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on either side of the marked line (dotted lines).



4. Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards print fabrics.

5. Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim the flying geese units to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2", making sure there is 1/4" between the point of the fabric A triangle and the top edge of the unit.

One fabric A square and 4 print squares will yield 4 flying geese units 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".




6. Repeat to make a total of 20 flying geese units 2 1/2" x 4 1/2". There will be 5 sets of 4 matching flying geese.



EIGHT POINT STAR BLOCK ASSEMBLY

1. Sew together the following units and pieces, pressing the seams open or as shown by the arrows, to make an eight point star block 8 1/2" x 8 1/2".

4 matching flying geese 2 1/2" x 4 1/2"
1 print square 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
4 fabric A squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"


2. Repeat to make a total of 5 eight point star blocks.




HOW TO JOIN

This has been my most asked question, how to join in on the Marigold Mystery quilt?  There is no official sign up, list, or cost to join in the mystery quilt along.  Each set of instructions will be posted to this blog as a post on the first Thursday of each month.
