Mosaic Mystery Quilt - Finished at Last!

My Mosaic Mystery quilt is finally finished!

I had the quilt top for the Mosaic Mystery quilt done forever ago (in early 2019 before the quilt along even started), but I had not gotten around to quilting it.  Then I started working on my book and the Mosaic Mystery Quilt had to be put to the side.  

You can find a pdf version of the Mosaic Mystery quilt in my shop.


Because I was not able to finish it, I sent it to Carol Alperin (who quilted a large number of my book quilts) and told her to quilt it whenever she had time.  Carol did a beautiful job on the quilting, using a light pink thread in a flower kind of pattern.

And here are a bunch of other pictures, I love this finish so much that I tried to give it a photo shoot (as much as I was able).







I used Painter's Palette Solids from the Paint Brush Studio for the quilt.  They have the perfect light pink that I used for the backing.

Mosaic Mystery Quilt ++ Quilt Top and Quilt Linkup



I hope that you are love the Mosaic Mystery quilt design and are working towards finishing your quilt tops and quilts!

Please take the time to read through some important items as we near the end of the quilt along...

Important Dates:
  • January 31st - Linkup of quilt tops for January's monthly linkup. See below for prizes.
    • NOTE: The link up for the reveal parade and the January linkup are the same so you only need to linkup once (if you link up for January, you do not need to re-linkup your quilt top for the reveal parade)
  • March 5th - Linkups of all quilt tops and/or quilts due into the linkup to be eligible for reveal parade prizes.
  • March 12th - Mosaic Mystery Quilt reveal parade!
  • March 16th or 17th - prize winners revealed.

How to Submit Your Quilt to the January Linkup and Reveal Parade and Be Eligible for Prizes:
  • Use the link-up link below. You will link up your quilt top or quilt and then on the reveal parade day, they will all publish together in one post.
  • If you have any problems with the link-up, e-mail me at MMDmysteryquilts@gmail.com. I will help you and will even load your quilt picture if needed.
  • If you need help, please do not DM me through Instagram, PM through Facebook, leave a comment in the Facebook group, etc. I simply cannot keep track of all of the different avenues of communication and might not see your question or problem.

Frequency Asked Questions:
  • Do I need to finish my quilt (quilted and bound) to take part in the parade and be eligible for prizes? 
    • No, you can enter pictures of completed quilt tops or finished quilts.
  • I posted my quilt picture to Facebook / Instagram / my blog, am I entered into the parade? 
    • No, you must link up your picture to be eligible. I will help you if you have any problems.
  • How are the prizes given out? 
    •  All prizes are given out randomly to quilters who participate in the reveal parade.
  • I loved the Mosaic Mystery quilt so much I made two (or more) versions, can I link up both of them? 
    •  Yes! You can link up all of the quilt tops and/or finished quilts you made from the Mosaic Mystery quilt and each quilt gets an entry into the prize drawing.

Mosaic Mystery ++ Quilt Top Assembly

The mystery is revealed!!  This month the instructions are to sew our blocks into a quilt top!!


There will be a separate post with more information about the reveal parade but the two most important things are:

1.     Entries (link not available yet) for the reveal parade are due Thursday, March 5th by midnight EST, giving you two months to work on your quilt.

2.     Both quilt tops and finished quilts can be entered into the reveal parade and be eligible for prizes.

 Row Assembly



Be careful to match the orientation of the blocks with the illustrations and press all seams open.

ROW A

Sew together the following blocks and pieces to make a row A measuring 3 ½" x 48 ½".  Repeat to make a total of 2 row A.

2 B/bg HSTs 3 ½" x 3 ½"
2 bg/C right-hand half geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½"
2 bg/C left-hand half geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½"
1 bg/B flying geese 3 ½" x 6 ½"
2 bg rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½"



ROW B

Sew together the following blocks and pieces to make a row B measuring 6 ½" x 48 ½".  Repeat to make a total of 3 row B.

2 A/bg flying geese 3 ½" x 6 ½"
4 house blocks 6 ½" x 6 ½"
2 bg/C SiaS blocks 6 ½" x 6 ½"
1 A/bg SiaS block 6 ½" x 6 ½"



ROW C

Sew together the following blocks and pieces to make a row C measuring 6 ½" x 48 ½".  Repeat to make a total of 4 row C.

1 bg/B right-hand half geese block 3 ½" x 6 ½"
1 bg/B left-hand half geese block 3 ½" x 6 ½"
4 diagonal blocks 6 ½" x 6 ½"
3 house blocks 6 ½" x 6 ½"



ROW D

Sew together the following blocks and pieces to make a row D measuring 6 ½" x 48 ½".  Repeat to make a total of 2 row D.

2 bg/C flying geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½"
4 house blocks 6 ½" x 6 ½"
2 A/bg SiaS block 6 ½" x 6 ½"
1 bg/C SiaS blocks 6 ½" x 6 ½"






 Quilt Top Assembly

1.       Sew together the rows to make the quilt top, pressing the seams between the rows open.  The quilt top (before borders are added) should measure 48 ½" x 60 ½".  


For borders, press all seams open or towards the borders.

2.       Cut a bg fabric strip 2 ½" x WOF in half, sew each half bg fabric strip to a full bg fabric strip 2 ½" x WOF, and trim to the average height of the quilt top, approx. 60 ½".  Sew bg fabric borders onto the sides of the quilt top.

3.       Cut a bg fabric strip 2 ½" x WOF in half, sew each half bg fabric strip to a full bg fabric strip 2 ½" x WOF, and trim to the average width of the quilt top, approx. 52 ½".  Sew bg fabric borders onto the top and bottom of the quilt top.

4.       Sew 2 border strips 4 ½" x WOF together and trim to the average height of the quilt top, approx. 64 ½".  Sew borders onto the sides of the quilt top.

5.       Cut a border strip 4 ½" x WOF in half, sew each half border strip to a full border strip 4 ½" x WOF, and trim to the average width of the quilt top, approx. 60 ½".  Sew borders onto the top and bottom of the quilt top. 

The finished quilt top should measure approx. 60 ½" x 72 ½". 




Finishing



1.  Make backing: Remove selvages from backing fabric, cut into 2 pieces (approx. 69" x WOF) and sew backing pieces together along the trimmed selvage edges using a 1/2" seam, pressing the seam open.  Trim backing to approx. 69" x 81".

2.  Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing.   Baste and quilt as desired.

3.  Cut the binding fabric into 7 strips 2 ½" x WOF.  Trim off selvages and sew together end-to-end to make the binding.  Bind and enjoy your quilt!

Mosaic Mystery ++ Flying Geese

The Mosaic Mystery Quilt instructions for December are here! This is the last month of piecing instructions, in January we are going to get to assemble the quilt top!

Flying Geese



Half Geese Blocks

1. Combine 4 bg fabric rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½" and 4 fabric B squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 4 bg/B right hand-half flying geese blocks (bg/B RH half geese blocks) 3 ½" x 6 ½" using steps a.-b.

       a. Place a fabric B square 3 ½" x 3 ½" on the right hand side of the bg fabric rectangle 3 ½" x 6 ½", right sides together. Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the fabric B square (shown as the solid line).

       b. Sew along the marked line. Trim ¼" from the seam line and press open or towards fabric B. Repeat to form a total of 4 bg/B RH half geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½".


2. Repeat step 1 using 4 bg fabric rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½" and 4 fabric C squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 4 bg/C right hand-half flying geese blocks (bg/C RH half geese blocks) 3 ½" x 6 ½".


3. Combine 4 bg fabric rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½" and 4 fabric B squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 4 bg/B left hand-half flying geese blocks (bg/B LH half geese blocks) 3 ½" x 6 ½" using steps a.-b.

       a. Place a fabric B square 3 ½" x 3 ½" on the left hand side of the bg fabric rectangle 3 ½" x 6 ½", right sides together. Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the fabric B square (shown as the solid line).

       b. Sew along the marked line. Trim ¼" from the seam line and press open or towards fabric B. Repeat to form a total of 4 bg/B LH half geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½".


4. Repeat step 3 using 4 bg fabric rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½" and 4 fabric C squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 4 bg/C left hand-half flying geese blocks (bg/C LH half geese blocks) 3 1/2" x 6 ½".


5. Reserve the remaining 4 bg fabric rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½", these will be used as is in the quilt top.




 Flying Geese Blocks

1. Combine 2 bg fabric rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½" and 4 fabric B fabric squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 2 bg/B flying geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½" using steps a.-d.

       a. Place a fabric B square 3 ½" x 3 ½" on the right side of the bg fabric rectangle 3 ½" x 6 ½", right sides together. Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the fabric B square (shown as the solid line).

       b. Sew along the marked line. Trim ¼" from the seam line and press open or towards fabric B.


       c. Place another fabric B square 3 ½" x 3 ½" on the left hand side of the bg fabric rectangle 3 ½" x 6 ½", right sides together. Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the fabric B square (shown as the solid line).

       d. Sew along the marked line. Trim ¼" from the seam line and press open or towards fabric B. Repeat to form a total of 2 bg/B flying geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½".


2. Repeat step 1 using 4 bg fabric rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½" and 8 fabric C squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 4 bg/C geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½".


3. Repeat step 1 using 6 fabric A rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½" and 12 bg fabric squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 6 A/bg geese blocks 3 ½" x 6 ½".





Half Square Triangle (HST) Blocks

1. Combine 2 fabric B squares 4" x 4" and 2 bg fabric squares 4" x 4" to make 4 B/bg HSTs using steps a.-c.

       a. Place the fabric B and bg fabric squares right sides together. Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the lighter square (shown as the solid line).

       b. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines). Cut on the solid line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric.

       c. Trim each HST block to 3 ½" x 3 ½". Repeat to make a total of 4 B/bg HST blocks.
