Malted Mystery ++ October Instructions

Welcome to the October set of instructions for the Malted Mystery Quilt!

The Malted Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that runs from July 2023 through May 2024 with a set of directions revealed the first Thursday of every month.

There is plenty of time to join in on the quilt along, instructions are published monthly and we just got started! You can find all of the information about the Malted Mystery, including schedule, past instructions, links to the Facebook group, sneak peek, and more in the Main Malted Mystery Quilt Page.

Easy to Print PDF Instructions

You can find the easy to print version of the September instructions right here:

Flower Star Blocks

Combine the following pieces to make flower star blocks 8 ½" x 8 ½".

1.  Arrange the following units and pieces according to the illustration.
2 A/bg HST units 2 ¼" x 2 ¼"
1 fabric B square 2 ¼" x 2 ¼"
1 bg square 2 ¼" x 2 ¼"

2. Sew together the pieces into rows, then sew the rows together, pressing the seams open or following the arrows, to make a corner unit 4" x 4".

3. Repeat to make a total of 32 corner units.

4.  Arrange the following units and pieces according to the illustration.
4 corner units 4" x 4"
1 fabric A square 1 ½" x 1 ½"
4 bg rectangles 1 ½" x 4"

5. Sew together the units and pieces into rows, then sew the rows together, pressing the seams open or following the arrows to make a flower star block 8 ½" x 8 ½".

6. Repeat to make a total of 8 flower star blocks.

Flying Geese Units

Use the instructions to make three different colorways of flying geese 2
½" x 4 ½".

1. Place 2 bg squares 3" x 3" on opposite corners of a fabric A square 5 ⅜" x 5 ⅜" right sides together. The bg squares will overlap in the middle of the fabric A square.

Use a removable marking device to make a line diagonally across the back of the bg squares (solid line).

2. Sew scant ¼" seam on either side of the marked line (dotted lines) and then cut on the marked line (solid line).

3. Press seams towards the bg fabric. (You will have two of these intermediate units.)

For each intermediate unit, place a bg square 3" x 3" on the corner of the fabric A triangle right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the bg square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on either side of the marked line (dotted lines).

4. Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards bg fabric.

5. Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim the flying geese units to 2 ½" x 4 ½" if necessary, making sure there is ¼" between the point of the fabric A triangle and the top edge of the unit.

One fabric A square and 4 bg squares will yield 4 flying geese units 2 ½" x 4 ½".

6. This will make a total of 4 A/bg flying geese units 2 ½" x 4 ½".

7. Repeat the flying geese instructions using 2 fabric B squares 5 ⅜" x 5 ⅜" and 8 bg squares 3" x 3" to make a total of 8 B/bg flying geese 2 ½" x 4 ½".

8. Repeat the flying geese instructions using 4 bg squares 5 ⅜" x 5 ⅜" and 16 fabric B squares 3" x 3" to make a total of 16 bg/B flying geese 2 ½" x 4 ½".

9. Repeat the flying geese instructions using 4 bg squares 5 ⅜" x 5 ⅜" and 16 fabric C squares 3" x 3" to make a total of 16 bg/C flying geese 2 ½" x 4 ½".
