Morewood Mystery ++ Half Square Triangles

Who loves half square triangles?

Welcome to the September instructions for the Morewood Mystery Quilt along. Half Square Triangle (HST) Units

Combine 30 fabric A squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" and 30 bg squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" to make 60 A/bg HST units 3" x 3".

1. Place a fabric A square 3 ½" x 3 ½" and a bg fabric square 3 ½" x 3 ½" right sides together. Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the lighter square (shown as the solid line).

 2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines). Cut on the solid line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric.

3. Trim each A/bg HST unit to 3" x 3". Repeat to make a total of 60 A/bg HST units.

Combine 15 fabric B squares 6" x 6" and 15 bg squares 6" x 6" to make 30 B/bg HST units 5 ½" x 5 ½".

1. Place a fabric B square 6" x 6" and bg fabric square 6" x 6" right sides together. Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the lighter square (shown as the solid line).

  2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines). Cut on the solid line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric.

3. Trim each B/bg HST unit to 5 ½" x 5 ½". Repeat to make a total of 30 B/bg HST units. 

 Note: you will use 29 of the 30 B/bg HST units 5 ½" x 5 ½" in the quilt top.

Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup - August 2020

Welcome to August's Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup!

I hope everyone had a good August, we just started school (virtually) here in South Carolina.  It has been a learning curve but it seems to be going pretty well.

My favorite finish this month was a challenge quilt I made for my local Greenville Modern Quilt Guild's challenge.  The rules were to create something quilted that had to be at least 50% recycled fabrics.   

Due to the pandemic, I did not want to go to Goodwill so I used what I had around the house.  I called my quilt "Two T-shirts" because it was made using two t-shirts (original name right?).  This was first ever time sewing or quilting with knits.

The gray shirt was an old college t-shirt from Carnegie Mellon, the college I went to and the black shirt was an old college t-shirt from Purdue where my husband went.  The size of the quilt was dictated by the amount of fabric I could cut from the shirts.

I used a nice thick black 12 wt Aurifil quilting thread for the quilting and bound it with an old Rifle Paper Co print.  My quilt did not win, but I had fun making it and playing with knits for the first time.

45-60 minute lecture and Q&A

Those three words, “quilt as desired” strike fear in many quilters. In this lecture, I take you through a step by step process you can use to help determine which quilt design you should use on your quilt, whether you are quilting the quilt yourself or sending it out to a quilting professional. This process helps you decide between allover versus custom patterns, which designs to use, and even quilting density and thread color. I will be showing many of my quilts and discussing how I decided on the quilting designs for each.

Swamp Rabbit ++ Summer Sampler 2020

 Today is my block's day for my block for the Summer Sampler 2020 :)

My block is called Swamp Rabbit after the walking/running/bike path that runs for over 22 miles through the heart of Greenville, South Carolina.  It is a favorite trail of my family's, especially because of an ice cream shop near the end with homemade, pink waffle cones!

The trail is mostly level with just a few peaks, just like the Swamp Rabbit block.

Here is a rendering of the block, I thought it might be fun to play around with it to see how it would look in a full quilt.

Normally, instructions are posted on the first Thursday of each month.  Due to vacation plans, I am posting this month's a few days early.  This change in posting schedule will only affect August, all of the other months will remain the same.

Cutting Instructions

FABRIC A

1. Cut 3 strips 3 ½" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 30 squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" (each strip can yield 11 squares).

2. Cut 3 strips 3" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 30 squares 3" x 3" (each strip can yield 13 squares).

FABRIC B

1. Cut 3 strips 6" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 15 squares 6" x 6" (each strip can yield 6 squares).

FABRIC C

1. Cut 2 strips 5" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 15 squares 5" x 5" (each strip can yield 8 squares).

2. Cut 4 strips 1 ½" x WOF.

FABRIC D

1. Cut 3 strips 5 ½" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 15 squares 5 ½" x 5 ½" (each strip can yield 7 squares).

BACKGROUND FABRIC

1. Cut 3 strips 6" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 15 squares 6" x 6" (each strip can yield 6 squares).

2. Cut 3 strips 5 ½" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 16 squares 5 ½" x 5 ½" (each strip can yield 7 squares).

3. Cut 6 strips 5" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 45 squares 5" x 5" (each strip can yield 8 squares).

4. Cut 6 strips 4 ½" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 45 squares 4 ½" x 4 ½" (each strip can yield 8 squares).

5. Cut 3 strips 3 ½" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 30 squares 3 ½" x 3 ½" (each strip can yield 11 squares).

6. Cut 10 strips 2 ½" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut the strips into 60 rectangles 2 ½" x 5 ½" (each strip can yield 7 rectangles).

7. Cut 5 strips 2" x WOF.

a. Sub-cut 3 strips into 30 rectangles 2" x 3" (each strip can yield 13 rectangles).

b. Reserve remaining 2 strips.

8. Cut 2 strips 1 ½" x WOF.
