Blogger's Quilt Festival {Voting}

The Fall 2016 Blogger's Quilt Festival is going on at Amy's blog Amy's Creative Side and voting is now open in the 12 different quilt categories.  Prizes are given out in each category by popular vote.

The festival has such wonderful inspiration, within each category, you can click on any of the quilts to be taken to a post explaining more about the quilt, usually including how the quilter made the quilt and additional photographs.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - State of Being - Fall 2016

It's that time of the year again...twice a year during quilt market, Amy, who blogs over at Amy's Creative Side, hosts the Blogger's Quilt Festival.  We are allowed to link up two quilts to the various categories and have the opportunity to visit and be inspired by other blogger's wonderful quilts.  I am excited to be not only a participant this year, but also a sponsor of the festival.

My first entry to the festival is my State of Being quilt which I designed and made for the pattern of the month for the Modern Quilt Guild.  The pattern is available as a free download to all MQG members and is now for sale in both paper and digital formats in my Etsy shop and in a digital format in my Craftsy shop.  The pattern is on an introductory sale for $7.50 for 2 weeks (until October 1st)

“State of Being” is a modern take on a traditional Ohio Star block.  The design begins with one full star block in the corner of the quilt and becomes increasing fractured as the design extends into the negative space of the quilt.  Both the design and quilting represent our complex and sometimes chaotic state of being.

The quilt was made using Kona Cotton Solids in white and shale and a print from the Doe collection by Carolyn Friedlander, all from Robert Kaufman.  

For the quilting, I quilted the star pieces with dense back and forth quilting and quilted the background using Wild Quilting as taught by Christina Cameli (which I learned in her Craftsy class (not an affiliate link)).  In Wild Quilting, a bunch of different quilting motifs are combined together.  I quilted State of Being on my home Bernina sewing machine.

The relatively small scale in the quilting and the matching threads give the background texture and interest.   I used 50 wt Aurifil thread in 2024 (white), 2610 (gray), and 1154 (orange) for the quilting.  The background alone took over 25 hours to quilt (most of the pebbles are about a 1/4" to 1/2").

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Canvas Lines - Fall 2016

It's that time of the year again...twice a year during quilt market, Amy, who blogs over at Amy's Creative Side, hosts the Blogger's Quilt Festival.  We are allowed to link up two quilts to the various categories and have the opportunity to visit and be inspired by other blogger's wonderful quilts.  I am excited to be not only a participant this year, but also a sponsor of the festival.

My second entry to the festival is my Canvas Lines quilt which I designed and made for The Quilter's Planner 2017.  The pattern is included with the planner along with a number of other wonderful patterns.  You can find out more about the planner and pre-order a copy here.

I designed Canvas Lines with a slight tribal feel with alternating diagonal geometric shapes and negative space. Canvas Lines combined some of the prints from the Doe collection by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman with some crisp Kona white fabric. 

I quilted Canvas Lines with a square meandering pattern using Aurifil 50 wt in white (color 2024). I think that the square meander added great texture to the negative space without taking away from the pieced blocks.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2015 - Riley Blake Triangle Quilt

It's that time of the year again...twice a year during quilt market, Amy, who blogs over at Amy's Creative Side, hosts the Blogger's Quilt Festival.  We are allowed to link up two quilts to the various categories and have the opportunity to visit and be inspired by other blogger's wonderful quilts.  I was so excited to be highlighted in March in one of Amy's Blogger's Quilt Festival Features.

My first entry to the festival is my Riley Blake Triangle Quilt which I designed and made for the Riley Blake challenge from the Modern Quilt Guild over the summer.  My post about the quilt and design can be found here and I am entering the quilt into the Small Quilt category. 

An equilateral triangle quilt has been on my to-do list forever and after I saw that some of the challenge fabrics had a repeating triangle print, I was sold.  In addition to making a triangle quilt for the first time, this was also the first time I had ever bound a quilt without 90 degree corners.

The quilt finished at about 48" x 48", a perfect size for a new baby.  I have a new niece or nephew due this in about a month and if the baby is a girl, I will be sending this quilt off to her. 

I knew that for the quilting in the background areas, I wanted to echo the hexagon shape formed by the print fabrics and then fill in the remaining space with a dense back and forth quilting.  I also wanted to mimic the quilting from the print areas in some of the background, negative space triangles.  I used a ribbon candy design in the print areas that once quilted, almost gave the hexagons quilting pattern that almost resembled a flower.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2015 - Improv Table Runner

I love taking part in Amy's Quilt Blogger Festival twice a year over on her blog Amy's Creative Side.  We are allowed to link up two quilts to the various categories and have the opportunity to visit and be inspired by other blogger's wonderful quilts.  I was so excited to be highlighted in March in one of Amy's Blogger's Quilt Festival Features.

My second entry to the festival is my Improv Table Runner which I designed and made for my Aunt and Uncle's 50 wedding anniversary.  My post about the quilt and design can be found here and I am entering the quilt into the Modern category. 

I have always admired by Aunt's art, she has been creating longer than I have been alive. Growing up, we had many of her ceramics and mixed media paintings in our house. Based on her art, I thought she might appreciate some improvisational quilting.

I decided on using mostly blue and green solids I with a black print or two. I also included typewriter fabric (Cotton & Steel's Black and White collection) because it was just too cute not to.

To make the piece I started with a loose idea of how wide I wanted the runner to be and just I improv pieced a couple of green and blue strips. I played around with them to see how to fit them all together and added in some stripes of essex linen in black (I love the texture it adds) and some shiny Cotton & Steel to add some sparkle. 

I used a serpentine stitch on my Bernina for some quick quilting, marking the first line down the center and then using the edge of my walking foot for spacing each additional line. The runner finished at 15" x 48". My husband liked it so much he asked me to make another one for our buffet (which is modeling the runner in this picture).

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Spring 2015 - Two-Tone Plus Plus

It's that time of the year...twice a year during quilt market, Amy over at Amy Creative Side hosts a Blogger's Quilt Festival.  We are allowed to link up two quilts to the various categories and have the opportunity to visit and be inspired by other blogger's wonderful quilts.  I was so excited to be highlighted in March in one of Amy's Blogger's Quilt Festival Features.

My second entry to the festival is the Two-Tone version of my Plus Plus pattern.  My post about the quilt and design can be found here and I am entering the quilt into the Small Quilts category.  

For the two-tone version of Plus Plus, I made the baby size using Kona white and Kona silver and a red print from Maritime Modern from Riley Blake for the accent plus.  I originally was going to use a dark gray binding but when went I to use it, it just did not look right.  I tested many, many other prints and colors until I tried this new Lotta Jansdotter print (from her new collection at JoAnn's).  The mustard yellow print worked perfectly.

I really had fun with the quilting on this quilt and went with some really dense quilting. In the background, I quilted swirls using white Aurifil thread. For the plus signs, I used my longarm ruler for the first time on my domestic machine (which actually was easier and more fun than I thought it would be). I designed the line pattern in the plus signs to be continuous so I only had one start and stop per plus sign and used matching color Aurifil threads for the quilting.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Spring 2015 - Use Your Illusion

My first entry to the festival is Use Your Illusion which I designed as the Modern Quilt Guild's free quilt pattern for March for all of their members.  My post about the quilt and design can be found here and I am entering the quilt into the Original Design category.  

I came up with the design for Use Your Illusion when I was playing with idea of echoed diamonds in EQ7 and then started randomly erasing some of the lines.  I loved the resultant effect with the partial and full geometric diamonds set on negative space.  The quilt reminded me of the 1990's Guns 'N Roses song "Use Your Illusion", so that is how it earned its name.

Abby Latimer of Latimer Lane quilted this quilt for me.  This is the first quilt I have ever had long arm quilted and Abby did such a wonderful job.  I wanted a curved quilting pattern to contrast with the straight lines of the piecing, but I wanted the curved quilting to be precise (my quilting with my domestic machine always has an organic, more random feel to it).  I picked out a figure 8 pattern that I think gives the quilt texture without taking away from the piecing.

This pattern is totally paper pieced which gives such precision to the quilt top. It is a lot to paper piece, but the paper piecing is very beginner friendly and the paper pieced paper templates are designed so that all of the seams within the quilt top nest for perfect points and less bulk.

Here are just a couple more pictures of the finish.  This is one of my favorite quilts I have ever made, thanks for taking a look!

Amy from Amy's Creative Side posted a short feature today about me as a featured Blogger's Quilt Festival quilter :)  In the interview, I explain a little on how I got into quilting and how textiles relate to my day job.  You can check out the interview right here.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2014 - Vintage Star

It's that time of the year...twice a year during quilt market, Amy over at Amy Creative Side hosts a Blogger's Quilt Festival.  We are allowed to link up two quilts to the various categories and have the opportunity to visit and be inspired by other blogger's wonderful quilts.

My second entry to the festival is Vintage Star which I originally posted about here and is entered into the Original Design category.

For this quilt I designed the pattern and used mostly Scrumptious by Bonnie and Camille for Moda (the line really is scrumptious) with some other Bonnie and Camille fabrics mixed in.  I made the lap version of the quilt finishing at about 60" x 60" and my daughter sleeps under it each night.  

One of the nice things about this pattern is that it is actually very layer cake friendly with each block being formed from 2 layer cake pieces.  Writing this design up as a pattern is on my to-do list :)

I quilted the quilt using a really open paisley swirl type pattern, I like how the curls compliment the straight lines and triangles in the blocks.  I bound the quilt using a red and pink bias stripe fabric from the Scrumptious collection.  

For the back of the quilt I found the perfect sheet set at Target having a repeating leaf pattern in teal and green for only $13.  I am a big fan of Target sheets as quilt backings.
