Looking Glass ++ Christmas Version

I hope everyone's holiday seasons are off to a good start!  Today I wanted to share a Christmas quilt I made for my neighbor.  She has been a wonderful friend and has helped me immensely by taking my son home from after school activities on the days I work. She loves Christmas (she has four Christmas trees set up in her house), so what to give her?  A Christmas quilt :)

I had a bunch of holiday fabrics I wanted to use up, so I decided on making a scrappy Xmas version of my pattern Looking Glass.  There are no half square triangles or flying geese so trimming is kept to a minimum and there are few seams to match (and the seams that do match up all nest).

I originally had pulled green and red prints from my stash and then noticed that one of the Christmas fabrics had a darker periwinkle background.  I thought that gave a lot of interest and depth to the colors so I added in some more darker periwinkle prints.  I also tried to vary the green and red prints in the quilt, using lighter and darker colors and different hues too.

The quilt top come together really quickly against a background of Bella White.  I backed the quilt in some red and white Amy Butler fabric I had on hand.

For the quilting, I went with a quick stipple allover the quilt along with each one of the family's names to make the quilt more personal and special for them.

I just dropped off the quilt on their porch so hopefully I will find out if they like it soon :)

This is actually my fourth time using this pattern, it is such a go to for a quick, easy, pre-cut/scrap friendly design.  Below are the other 3 quilts I have made with this pattern.

Twin Size Looking Glass - Birch Farm

My co-worker just welcomed her first foster child into her home after battling infertility for many years and spending almost 2 years to get certified as a foster parent by the state.  What does every new child need?  A quilt!

This is the twin version of Looking Glass.  You can get your own copy of Looking Glass in my pattern shop (digital and print versions) and on Etsy.

The little boy is 3 years old so a baby sized quilt was not going to work.  I decided that I would make a twin size quilt for his new bed.  I only had 2 weeks between the time my co-worker picked the little boy up and our shower for her so at work I needed a quick and fast quilt!

After looking at my growing stack of charm packs, I decided to make a twin size version of Looking Glass.  I had already made a baby size version and a lap size version of the pattern so I knew that it would come together quickly and easily.  There are no half square triangles or flying geese so trimming is kept to a minimum and there are few seams to match (and the seams that do match up all nest).

I have had some Birch Farm charm packs (by Joel Dewberry) in my stash which seemed perfect for a little boy.  I only had 3 packs so I pulled some coordinating fat quarters to extend the charm packs to get enough fabrics to make the quilt.  I went with Kona ash as the background (I figured white would not be a good choice for a little boy).  Ash worked well as I was able to use both white prints and very dark prints in the charm packs because they both contrasted well with the ash.

By the end of week 1, the quilt blocks were made and then sewn into a quilt top.  I used a sheet as the backing (I have a post scheduled for next week talking about what I have learned about using sheets as backing materials).

In the second week, I quilted the quilt with a very simple and larger scale stipple design for its speed and to keep the quilt nice and soft.  After binding with a medium solid gray fabric, the quilt had a little photoshoot (I forgot how hard it is to take good pictures of a big quilt), went for a wash, and got all wrapped up to celebrate the little boy's new home.

My co-worker is such a wonderful person with so much love to give, I am so glad that she has the opportunity to share that love and give a child the best possible start to life.  I hope he loves the quilt!

Looking Glass Blog Hop - Debbie

Today I would like to highlight one of my reviewers Debbie who does not have a blog (yet).

Debbie contacted me when I put out a call for pattern reviewers for Looking Glass and I am so glad that I have had the chance to get to know her.

Debbie is a nurse and has been married to her wonderful husband for 36 years. She has two grown children and two grand girls.  Debbie started quilting in 1999 when she stopped in a local quilt shop and signed up for a class.  In addition to quilting she enjoys exercise, especially running having run a half marathon the same year she started quilting.

Debbie used a fat quarter bundle purchased from Pink Castle Fabrics along with a few other fabrics from her stash.  Here is her lap sized version of Looking Glass, I love it!!

I met Michelle when she had posted her version of my Candy Circles quilt pattern I had posted on the Moda Bake Shop. I think that she might be my long lost quilting twin, we have very similar tastes in fabrics, I love all of her quilt designs, and we have very similar aged little kids.

Michelle is a self-taught sewist. She loves making bags, pillows, and simple garments. Her hobby turned into a true obsession, however, when she made her first quilt, in the summer of 2013. Now, over a dozen quilts later, she squeezes in time at her sewing machine whenever she can, recording her creative adventures at From Bolt to Beauty.

Here are some pictures of her finished baby version of Looking Glass that she is calling Happy Quilt.  I would agree that the quilt is very happy!  I love how she used an extra row of blocks in the quilt backing, it really is a two-sided quilt.

My original version was the baby sized quilt using the Into the Woods collection by Lella Boutique for Moda.  

For the hop, I made a second version, the lap size using some of the red and pink prints from the Greenfield Hill collection by Densye Schmidt for Free Spirit. These fabrics were from my local quilt guild and this quilt will be going to our guild's charity.  I did not have enough of the prints so I added in some Kona ash and coal.
  

I quilted the white areas in a figure 8 design and added some feathers and swirls to the print areas because I just took a feathers class and was looking for an excuse to practice them.

Looking Glass Finished

Back a few weeks ago I posted my work in progress on a new quilt I was calling Over the River.  I have know finished the quilt and renamed it Looking Glass.

The quilt was so fun and easy to make.  I needed a quick, little finish and this quilt was exactly that.

In my effort not to purchase fabric to make a quilt backing, I pieced a back using an extra row of blocks along with some Kona white.  I almost like the back better than the front.  A dark brown print (so old I am not sure what line it was from) finished off the quilt as the binding.

For the quilting, I used a loopy quilting pattern.  The pattern looks like a cursive "l" over and over and over again.  I start at the left hand side of the quilt and work my way towards the right.  I was able to quilt using this pattern without any marking of the quilt (yeah!) because the seam lines within the blocks and sashing formed lines.

I have had a number of quilters ask if I was going to write this quilt up into a pattern and so I happy to say that I am working on putting the finishing touches on the draft of the pattern.  The pattern is going to include baby, lap, twin, queen, and king sizes.  If anyone would like to pattern test or review, just let me know :)
