Arrow Point Path ++ Baby Size

A co-worker was due to have a baby boy in January so I had just started planning her baby quilt when we found out that the doctors might induce the pregnancy early due to a medical condition.  The baby shower was all of a sudden scheduled less than a week out.  I needed to make a baby quilt and fast!

I decided to use one of my favorite patterns, Arrow Point Path.  I like how in this pattern, the block sizes are scaled so even at a baby size, you get the full impact the blocks and design.

I knew that I did not want to use a white background due to the quilt being for a baby, so I went up into my sewing room to see what I had available.  I have a bolt of the FreeSpirit Solid in Cerulean which looked perfect for a baby boy.

I combined the blue background with white, gray, and black scrap prints from my stash.  How is it that I cut all of the prints from my scrap bin and yet it does not look any smaller? :)

I picked a Me + You modern batik print for the backing.  The quilt was the perfect size to use with a single width of backing fabric, no piecing the backing, yeah!

The blocks came together quickly and easily and soon I was onto basting and quilting.  I quilted using a stipple (one of my favorite designs).  I timed myself and had the quilting complete in less than 18 minutes.

After a quick photo shoot, the baby quilt was washed and ready for gifting.

The mom loved the quilt and even better news was that she found out that she would most likely not have to deliver early!

If you want to pick up your own copy of Arrow Point Path (which contains instructions for baby, lap, twin, and queen sizes) you can get it in my pattern shop.

Here are the other two versions of Arrow Point Path I have made (both lap sizes).

Arrow Point Path ++ Pattern Release

You may remember Arrow Point Path, it was originally released as part of Quilt Theory as a short pattern for the lap size on a postcard.

When Quilt Theory disbanded, I asked on the blog if there was interest in any of the patterns being released as fuller patterns.  The votes showed that there was interest for Arrow Point Path to be expanded into a multiple size pattern.

I am sorry it took so long, but today the full Arrow Point Path pattern is ready and available!  The pattern contains instructions for baby, lap, twin, and queen sizes and has additional information such as finishing and a color sheet to audition color schemes for your own quilt.

You can now find the pattern as a digital download in my Etsy shop in a digital version.  The pattern is on sale for one week (through Tuesday June 25th at midnight) for only $7.50. (You even can use coupon code TWOPATTERNS for $2 off two patterns or THREEPATTERNS $4 off 3 patterns in my Etsy shop for even more savings.)

The wonderful photography of the color quilt was by the president of Quilt Theory, Michelle Bartholomew.

Many thanks to:

  • Michael Miller for the Cotton Couture Solids
  • The Warm Company for the Warm & White batting
  • Aurifil for the piecing and quilting thread
Arrow Point Path is a lap sized, fat quarter (or scrap) friendly pattern.  The cover quilt was made in solids but it looks great in prints too. Here is a second version using some Densye Schmidt prints.

Many thanks to Yvonne of Quilting Jetgirl for her pattern tech editing!  Just a reminder, you can find Periodicity in digital and print versions in my Etsy shop (on sale for 1 week).

Arrow Point Path - Chicopee Version

It is rare that I remake a pattern, there are so many new quilt designs on my to-do list, but I had so much fun making a second version Arrow Point Path as a Christmas gift.

You can find the digital and print versions of Arrow Point Path (in four sizes: baby, lap, twin, and queen) in my pattern shop.

I decided to make my son's cub scout leader a quilt for Christmas.  He has been the leader of the troop for 5 years and with my son bridging up to boy scouts in the spring, I wanted to make him an extra special thank you.

I needed a quilt design that would be a relatively quick make and one that I thought he (and his family) would like.  I had a bunch of charm packs of 6" square (yes, strange size) of Chicopee by Densye Schmidt.  The Chicopee line has been one of my all time favorites and I was looking forward to making it into a quilt.  I was also excited to see how the design would look using prints versus the blue and green solids of my first version.

My pattern Arrow Point Path, which I designed as part of Quilt Theory, fit the bill perfectly.  The pattern requires 6" sq prints along with a background fabric.  I had the white background fabric and the Tim Holtz Documentation print from the Eclectic Elements collection for the backing fabric in my stash so I was already to go!

The blocks came together easily and soon the quilt top was done.  At this point, I needed to gift the quilt in 4 more days so a quick quilting design was a must.  I love stippling a quilt so I stippled using the soft white (2021) 50 wt Aurifil thread.  I had the entire quilt quilted in less than 2 hours.

I bound the quilt using another Densye Schmidt print I had in my stash, from Shelburne Falls, I really like the look of the plaid printed on the bias.

After taking some pictures, I washed the quilt to give it that crinkly, soft look.  I am always worried if I gift a quilt without washing it, the recipient will think that they did something wrong washing it when it comes out of the dryer looking so different.  Here is a picture of the yummy texture of the washed quilt (sorry for the indoor shot, it was super windy out and I had to gift the quilt the next day).

My son's cub scout leader and his family loved the quilt.  He was amazed at how I had quilted it.  It was a good reminder to me that to those that do not quilt and are not familiar with quilting, simply moving the quilt under a stationary needle to create a quilting design (no matter how simple the design is to us) is truly impressive to others.

Quilt Stats:

Batting: Warm & White by the Warm Company

Quilt Theory ++ Arrow Point Path

I am excited to be able to share some secret sewing and a new project with you today... (and a giveaway at the end of this post :)

Photograph by Michelle Bartholomew

I would like to introduce Arrow Point Path, my quilt pattern for the 2nd pattern collection of Quilt Theory. Arrow Point Path is a lap sized, fat quarter friendly pattern that combines beginner level piecing into a strong geometric design. The cover quilt was made in solids but would look great in prints too. In fact, I have a second version in the works using some Densye Schmidt prints.

UPDATE: Arrow Point Path is now available in my pattern shop and has been updated to include baby, lap, twin, and queen sizes.  You can find the pattern here:

Many thanks to Michael Miller for providing the beautiful Cotton Couture solids and to Aurifil for supplying the thread for the piecing and quilting.

I quilted Arrow Point Path in an swirl/paisley type design using 40wt white (color 2024) Aurifil thread.  I liked the effect of using the 40wt (versus my usual go to 50wt) because it made the quilting stand out just a bit more to give the quilt some good texture.

Our goal at Quilt Theory is to create simple and modern quilt patterns, and we design collections of patterns printed on small cards and one-page PDFs. As a group, we have become a strong team as we worked through writing, testing, editing, and quilting the patterns in our collection.

For our second collection, we challenged ourselves to write patterns that utilize precut bundles of fabric. We hope you find a lot of inspiration in our collection to make quilts from your favorite bundles in your stash.

To celebrate the launch of Quilt Theory, I am giving away a digital copy of my pattern, Arrow Point Path, a digital copy of Quilt Theory Coloring Pages (2nd collection), and a two Joel Dewberry charm packs!!
