Magnificent Mystery Quilt ++ Part 3 ++ Large Hourglass

Who is ready to start sewing?

Let's get sewing some hourglass units!  Welcome to the September instructions of the Magnificent Mystery Quilt, the eleventh annual Meadow Mist Designs mystery quilt along!

The Magnificent Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that will run from July 2025 through April 2026 to make a throw sized quilt about 60 ½" x 72 ½" with a set of instructions posted the first Thursday of every month.  The quilt pattern is at an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).

Easy to Print PDF Instructions

If you would like easy to print instructions for the September instructions: Part 3 - Large Hourglass Units, they can found as a free download through my shop:

E/D HST UNITS

1. Place a fabric E square 5 ½" x 5 ½" and a fabric D square 5 ½" x 5 ½" right sides together (or 5 ¾" x 5 ¾" squares if they were oversized).

Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the fabric D square (shown as the solid line).

2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines).  Cut on the marked line and press seams toward fabric E.

Do not trim the half-square triangle (HST) units at this point.

3. Repeat to make a total of 28 E/D HST units approx. 5" x 5" (approx. 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" if using oversized squares).

E/bg HST UNITS

1. Place a fabric E square 5 ½" x 5 ½" and a bg square 5 ½" x 5 ½" right sides together (or 5 ¾" x 5 ¾" squares if they were oversized).

Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the bg square (shown as the solid line).

2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the marked line (shown as the dotted lines).  Cut on the solid line and press seams toward fabric E.

Do not trim the half-square triangle (HST) units at this point.

3. Repeat to make a total of 28 E/bg HST units approx. 5" x 5" (approx. 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" if using oversized squares).

HOURGLASS UNITS

1. Place a E/D HST unit and a E/bg HST unit right sides together as shown so that the seams nest.

Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of one of the HST units (shown as the solid line) perpendicular to the seam.

2. Sew ¼" on both sides of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines).  Cut on the marked line and press seams open.

3. Trim the large hourglass units to 4 ½" x 4 ½".

4. Repeat to make a total of 56 large hourglass units.
