Magnolia Mystery Quilt ++ Fabric Requirements

Welcome to the start of the Magnolia Mystery Quilt!!
I am so excited to get started and I hope you are too!

Quilt Along Intro -
The Magnolia Mystery Quilt will run from July 2017 until February 2018 with a set of directions revealed the first Thursday of every month. The mystery quilt is an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).

The Magnolia Mystery Quilt will contain instructions for two sizes of quilts:

  • a lap quilt finishing at 60" x 67"
  • a queen size finishing at 89 ½" x 95"

Instructions -
The instructions are published right in this post (after these few announcements) and are now available (because the quilt along is complete) in an easy to print pdf format for sale on Etsy:

(If you have any trouble with the link, you can find instructions on how to access and download the pdf file here.)  Additionally, the directions and all of the other information related to the mystery quilt can always be found on the Magnolia Mystery Quilt Page.

Facebook Group
I encourage you to join the Meadow Mist Designs Facebook Group (if you have not already).  We now have over 2,200 members in the group and I am so excited for the members to start sharing pictures of their fabric picks.  If you want some feedback on possible fabric choices or have any questions during the quilt along, the Facebook is an excellent resource.  You can find the Facebook Group right here.  Please share your progress pics on social media with the hashtag #MagnoliaMysteryQuilt and tag me at @MeadowMistDesigns.

Sponsors -

We have 15 generous sponsors and over $1,000 worth of prizes for this event!  You can read more about the sponsors and prizes from post 1post 2, and post 3.

Quilt Fabric Options and Sales -
Tomorrow (Friday July 7th) I will be posting some curated shopping lists for fabric options from the Fat Quarter Shop. A little different than a kit, if you like any of the fabric combinations, simply click on each fabric link and add the amount of yardage listed to your online shopping cart.

Also in tomorrow's post will be a special fabric deal from the Honey, Bunny, and Doll shop for your background Kona needs (because the Magnolia Mystery quilt uses quite a bit of background fabric).

Unmystery Quilt -
Want to join in the fun but making a mystery quilt is not your thing? If you would like to see the final pattern to decide whether to join in, or to help pick colors; simply e-mail me (MMDmysteryquilts@gmail.com) and I will send you a sneak peak (the only rule is that you have to keep the design completely to yourself as to not spoil anyone else's surprise).

And now without further ado....July's instructions...Fabric Selection.

Fabric Requirements

The Magnolia Mystery quilt contains 4 different fabrics in the quilt top:

Fabric Selection Tips

Within the monthly quilt instructions, the following colors will be used to represent the fabrics:

1.  For these quilt instructions, the colors used in the illustrations are as follows: A and B are medium tones, C is a dark tone, and D is a light tone.  However, you can easily change up the colors (such as making D a dark tone) as long as there is good contrast between the fabrics that are going to be next to each other.

2.  The following fabrics will be next to each other within the quilt, please test your fabrics selections to make sure that there is enough contrast between the fabrics:
  • A is next to C and D
  • B is next to C and D
  • C is next to A, B, and D
  • D is next to A, B, and C
3.  Fabric D is the background of the quilt.  As you can see from the fabric yardages above, about 70% of the quilt is going to be background fabric.  So that the eye has a place to rest within the quilt, it is suggested that a solid or a tone-on-tone print that reads as a solid be used for Fabric D.

4.  Due to the finished fabric piece sizes and piecing methods for the quilt top, it is recommended that fabric prints used have a smaller scale, non-directional design.

5.  Each of the fabric yardages above may be made using scraps of similar colors instead of a single fabric.  Instructions are included to use pre-cuts for Fabric B.

Any questions?  Leave them in a comment below or post them to our Facebook group page.  I look forward to seeing everyone's fabric selections.

I look forward to seeing all of your fabric combinations!  The next set of instructions will be published on the first Thursday of August (the 3rd).

  10. Do we have to decide on the size at the beginning, or can we start as the lap and enlarge to the queen by making more pieces as we go along if we choose?

    1. You will have the decide right in the beginning as the cutting and piecing instructions are different.

  13. Thank you, Cheryl, for some more fun! I usually ask for a sneak peek as I don't like surprises unless there's a bow on top....but this time I'm going to play along fully and let this be a true mystery. I hope you know how much we appreciate how much you share in patterns, expertise and inspiration.

  14. Cheryl, Would a print background be o.k. for D or not really?

    1. It is all up to your personal preference. The fabric D will be the background and cover 70% of the quilt top area. If you think that the print will work then go for it :)
