Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 16 - Boxed Pinwheel - Blog Hop and Giveaways

Welcome to my stop on the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 16 Blog Tour!

I am so excited to have a block called Boxed Pinwheel in Volume 16 of the 100 Blocks magazine by Quiltmaker!  This is my seventh block to appear in the 100 Blocks magazines.  You can see my previous 100 Blocks:

Boxed Pinwheel is a great confident beginner level paper-pieced block.  The 12" (finished) block was designed the block using Electric Quilt 7 (EQ7) and I really like how it looks like the pinwheel is floating in front of the frame.

I had some fun playing around with some quilt top designs using Boxed Pinwheel

....in a classic design..

... on point...

... with a dark background and some blocks with just a frame...

...a different colorway...

...how about some holiday versions?  Halloween...

...Christmas...

...4th of July or a Quilts of Valor quilt...

I hope that you have enjoyed all of these renderings of  Boxed Pinwheel being used in different quilt tops to see how versatile the block is!

Sparkling Stars in Quilts from 100 Blocks

I am super excited to have quilt called Sparkling Stars in the Quilts from 100 Blocks Fall 2017 magazine :)

Back in the spring I had a block called Sizzle Star in the 100 Blocks Magazine Volume 15.  Sizzle Star was a paper pieced block design with some unusual angles and shapes that finished at 12" x 12".  Here is the original block from the 100 Blocks Vol 15 magazine.

I was so excited when Quiltmaker contacted me and asked I wanted to make a quilt using Sizzle Star  for their special issue Quilts from 100 Blocks!   I was busy at the time making the quilts for my upcoming book, so I designed the quilt, Eileen Fowler pieced the quilt top, and Kim Waite quilted the quilt.

For this design, I increased the block size to 15" square (finished) and set the blocks on point as I think that the stars really pop rotated 45 degrees.  I like how this creates a nice 57" x 72" lap sized quilt using only 7 blocks (as each block is pretty complex and time-consuming to piece).

Sparkling Stars is one of 16 beautiful quilts in the Quilts from Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Fall 2017 magazine.  Magazine copies are now available in both print and digital formats. The Sparking Stars quilt pattern is also available as a stand alone digital quilt pattern.

Thank you so much Quiltmaker for allowing me to be part of your wonderful publication!!  I am linking up to Finish up Friday over at Crazy Mom Quilts.

Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 15 - Sizzle Star - Blog Hop and Giveaways

Welcome to my stop on the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 15 Blog Tour!

I am so excited to have a block called Sizzle Star in Volume 15 of the 100 Blocks magazine by Quiltmaker (and my block even made the cover)!  This is my sixth block to appear in the 100 Blocks magazines.  You can see my previous 100 Blocks:

Sizzle Star is a great advanced level paper-pieced block.  The 12" (finished) block does have a lot of pieces and template sections (so it is not the quickest block to sew up), but I think that the resultant block has a striking look to it.  I designed the block using Electric Quilt 7 (EQ7) by using some of the Serendipity functions and then further refining the design.

Just like my Ruby Roads quilt I shared 2 weeks ago, the Sizzle Star block has a different look and feel when placed on-point:

Horizontal                                           On-Point

To show the versatility of this block, I played around in EQ7 to see how many different quilt top designs I could make with the block.  Here are some of my favorites...

The Sizzle block in a horizontal layout (with sashing) in a variety of colors.

The Sizzle block in an on-point layout (with sashing) in a variety of colors.

A single column of blocks (great way to enlarge a quilt without having to piece so many blocks)

On-point with a dark background and some half blocks around the edges.

An on-point patriotic version, great for a 4th of July picnic or a Quilts of Valor quilt.

I hope that you have enjoyed all of these renderings of Sizzle Star being used in different quilt tops to see how versatile the block is!

One question I was asked to answer in this blog post was where is the oddest place I have hidden fabric.  The only time I have had to hide fabric was after I bought an Elsa (from the movie Frozen) quilt panel at a quilt guild meeting and was showing it to my husband when I heard my daughter come towards the living room.  I quilt hid the panel in one of my end tables so I would not ruin her surprise before I could sew it up into a full quilt for her (here is Elsa peeking out!)

Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 14 - Pinwheel Punch - Blog Hop and Giveaway

Welcome to my stop on the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 14 Blog Tour!

I am so excited to have a block called Pinwheel Punch in Volume 14 of the 100 Blocks magazine by Quiltmaker!  This is my fifth block to appear in the 100 Blocks magazines.  You can see my previous 100 Blocks: Sewing Triangles in Volume 10Outlined Plus in Volume 11, Paper Star in Volume 12, and Cloud Burst in Volume 13.

Pinwheel Burst is a great beginner level paper-pieced block.  The 12" (finished) block is pieced from four sections with few seams to match.

Here is what a lap sized quilt using this block might look like:

Here is the quilt rendered in some other colors...

How about some holiday versions?  Below are Halloween and Christmas variations...

Candy Corn Pinwheels!!!

Candy Cane Pinwheels :)

Getting a little crazy, I selectively erased some of the pinwheel parts for a more modern and abstract version... I think that this one might go on my to-do list...

I hope that you have enjoyed all of these renderings of Pinwheel Punch being used in different quilt tops to see how versatile the block is.

Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Sampler - Sewing Triangles

Quiltmaker started a new Block of the Month series that began in March 2016 called Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Sampler. This 48-block (with a 49th bonus block) sampler quilt features blocks from all issues of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks reduced to 6” from their original 12".

I was honored to find out that my block, Sewing Triangles from 100 Blocks Vol 10 was included in the sampler.

Here is the sampler in three different color ways (you can purchase the pattern and kits here). As part of this year-long program, Quiltmaker will be featuring a different block on their blog quiltmaker.com/quiltypleasures each Wednesday (4 blocks per month).

Here was my original version of Sewing Triangles with a single focal fabric and a scrappy background:

For the 6" square version I decided to use a number of navy prints for the focal fabric and a single print for the background.

Once the block is shrunk to 6", those HST are 1" finished and so to make the piecing easier and more precise, I decided to paper piece the block. I used my free Square in a Square templates for the middle area of the block and quickly drafted the paper piecing templates for the corner sections using EQ7. (I was just playing with different arrangements of the corner blocks below.)

I made 4 blocks, then pieced them together to make a mini quilt 12" x 12". I quilted the mini using Aurifil 50 wt in Dove, which matched the background in a crosshatching design. The finished mini is going to go on my sewing room wall :)

You can find more about the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Sampler on the Quilty Pleasures Blog and find purchase the pattern and kits here.

Kiku Quilt in Quilts from 100 Blocks

I'd love to show you my Kiku quilt today which is part of the Quilts from Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Fall 2016 magazine.

Back in the spring I had a block called Cloud Burst in the 100 Blocks Magazine Volume 13.  Cloud Burst was a paper pieced block design with some unusual angles and shapes that finished at 12" x 12".  Here is the original block from the magazine.

I was so excited when Quiltmaker contacted me and asked I wanted to make a quilt using Cloud Burst for their special issue Quilts from 100 Blocks!

For the quilt, Quiltmaker asked me to increase the size of the block to 15" x 15" (finished) and together we came up with a modern setting that contains a column of full blocks sandwiched between columns that contain partial blocks (to finish off the secondary pattern) for a more modern design.

The quilt is a throw size and finishes at 67-1/2” x 75”.  Quiltmaker named the full quilt the Kiku quilt after the Kiku flower saying "The kiku flower, also known as the chrysanthemum, is cherished as a symbol of perfection in Japan."

Johellen George of Cabin Quilt Studio (a super talented longarm quilter in my local guild) quilted Kiku for me in a double loop pattern.

Here are some of my close up shots of the quilt so you can see the piecing and quilting better:

The Kiku quilt pattern is one of 17 beautiful quilts in the Quilts from Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Fall 2016 magazine.  Magazine copies are now available in both print and digital formats. The Kiku quilt pattern is also available as a stand alone digital quilt pattern.

Thank you so much Quiltmaker for allowing me to be part of your wonderful publication!!
