Melodic Mystery Quilt ++ Fabric Requirements

Welcome to the kick off of the Melodic Mystery Quilt!!  I am so excited to get started and I hope that you are too!

The Melodic Mystery Quilt is a free, monthly quilt along hosted on my blog (all instructions will be posted here) running from July 2022 through April 2023 with a set of instructions posted the first Thursday of every month.

The lap sized mystery quilt is at an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).

The directions and all of the other information relate dot the mystery quilt can always be found on the Melodic Mystery Home Page.

HOW TO JOIN

This has been my most asked question, how to join in on the Melodic Mystery quilt?  There is no official sign up, list, or cost to join in the mystery quilt along.  Each set of instructions will be posted to this blog as a post on the first Thursday of each month.

Links to the mystery quilt posts will also be posted in the Facebook Group, on Instagram, and in the Newsletter.

Don't miss a single Melodic Mystery Quilt post (or any other blog posts) by subscribing to the Meadow Mist Designs blog posts via EmailBloglovin, or Feedly.

SPONSORS

We have a dozen generous sponsors donating fabric, thread, patterns, and more as prizes.  You can read all about the sponsors here.

FABRIC KITS

You do not need to purchase a fabric kit to take part in the mystery quilt along, but if you would like to use a fabric kit there are many options.  I put the fabric kit information into its own post (also posting today at the same time) to keep this post from being too long.  You can find the quilt kits here.

UN-MYSTERY QUILT - SNEAK PEEK OPTION

The sneak peek is now available :)  You can find the un-mystery quilt sneak peek pdf right here.

Remember to please keep the design of the mystery quilt a secret.

EASY TO PRINT INSTRUCTIONS

Now that the Melodic Mystery quilt along has ended, you can find a easy to print, full version of the pattern for sale in my pattern shop.

PATTERN NOTES
  • Width of fabrics (WOF) for this pattern is assumed to be 40".
  • A scant ¼" (a thread width smaller than ¼") seam is to be used throughout the construction of the quilt unless otherwise instructed.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

FABRIC SELECTION TIPS
  • It is suggested that a solid or a tone-on-tone print that reads as a solid be used for the background fabric.
  • Due to the finished fabric piece sizes and piecing methods for the quilt top, it is recommended that fabric prints used (especially the background) have a non-directional design.
  • To help plan your fabrics for the mystery quilt, be sure that all fabrics that are next to each other have enough contrast between them.

  • Scrappy/Charm Pack Option - The fabric A may be made using scraps or from charm packs (or other precut fabrics).  Generally, the fabric A pieces within the quilt are 4" x 4" or smaller.

Many thanks to the generous sponsors of the Melodic Mystery Quilt!

Any questions? Leave them in a comment below or post them to our Facebook group page. I look forward to seeing everyone's fabric selections. The next set of instructions will be published on the first Thursday of August, the 4th.

  3. I’m so excited!! I found your website at the very end of the Macaron Mystery. I did the Macaron and absolutely love it! It’s the very first quilt I’ve made to actually keep for myself. I can’t wait to start!! I even led my quilting mentor this way, so we’ll be doing it together.

  5. OK, I'm in again & although I don't do FB or IG, I loved seeing the final parade with all the different variations. I'm pondering on fabric choices now & as "down under" is in the middle of an atrocious winter, I've been sorting through scraps & think I'll gather some together for fabric A, then think about what to put with them. I've enjoyed the 3 I've done so far and am looking forward to this one. Thank you, take care & hugs from a very wet, windy & cold down under.

  6. Hi Cheryl, I'm joining in late, but just couldn't resist getting in on the fun! I do need your advice on my fabric selections, but will have to send you pics in an email. Is that okay?
