I would like to introduce Up the Ladder, my quilt pattern for the 3rd pattern collection of Quilt Theory. Up the Ladder was inspired by traditional quilt ladders used to showcase and store quilts and is a lap sized, jelly roll or mini charm pack friendly pattern. The pattern combines beginner level piecing into a strong geometric design.

Many thanks to Michael Miller for providing the beautiful Cotton Couture solids and to Aurifil for supplying the thread for the piecing and quilting.
I quilted Up the Ladder in a topography like design using 50 wt white (color 2024) Aurifil thread. The 50 wt worked well to create texture but not stand out too much on the darker colored fabrics.

Our goal at Quilt Theory is to create simple and modern quilt patterns, and we design collections of patterns printed on small cards and one-page PDFs. As a group, we have become a strong team as we worked through writing, testing, editing, and quilting the patterns in our collection.
For our third collection, we picked out a color palette that each of us worked with. We hope you find a lot of inspiration in our collection to make quilts from your favorite bundles in your stash.
Where to Buy
PDF patterns are available now through our website QuiltTheory.com. Pattern cards coming soon to a local quilt shop near you! Let your local quilt shop know you want them to carry Quilt Theory patterns.

oK, call me boring, white is my favorite background!
ReplyDeleteThis is a good pattern. Now that I understand the background/ meaning I like it even more.
ReplyDeleteRereading your blog in regards to the giveaway how beautiful would your quilt be with a marine background and the lighter colors where you have color. Basically a negative of the original. That would be so pretty. That I love even more!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt! Depending on the quilt, I usually use a neutral colour.
ReplyDeleteI love the clean look using white as the background.
ReplyDeleteCool design and nice quilting! I like white too as a background!
ReplyDeleteHard to say. I have only completed a few quilts. Which color I pick depends on the other fabrics that I am using. The one quilt has a brown sashing for the background while the 2 others were white with owls and I Spy.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt design. The color really pop! My favorite color for background is a slightly off-white.
ReplyDeleteI really love the simplicity and color of your patterns. The price point is a real bonus. My fav background color is "White Page" in Grunge.
ReplyDeleteI usually use white of off white. I'm trying to stretch a little-for your mystery, I'm using a light mint green and for another mystery, I'm using grey.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful--as usual. I love the bright colors.
Gray or white usually, but I'm planning a quilt now that uses light purple as the background!
ReplyDeleteThe color I love to use for a background depends on the pattern and other fabrics that I am using. I do tend to use a lot of white, but have used gray, green and blue before!
ReplyDeleteSandy A
I like to use whites and off-whites.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm using a lot of low volume white/gray so that bundle would be very useful!
ReplyDeleteI love using black in my backgrounds! churcae(at)auburn(dot)edu
ReplyDeleteSo pretty, love the colors in the piecing.
ReplyDeleteI've probably used white more than any other color for the background fabric, but I will select another color if I want something to blend with the other fabrics in my blocks.
ReplyDeleteI can see the stuffed animals climbing your ladders at nap time! I have used black, white and gray as backgrounds often, but love a good polka dot or ditzy print instead. And then there are the quilts that call for saturated colors... like the Cotton Couture Hyacinth one I will be cutting soon.
ReplyDeleteKona Shadow! It's the perfect neutral for me! Love your quilt and that quilting is amazing...gonna have to try that! Thank you for the giveaway! I'm trying to build my low volume stash for an upcoming quilt...these would work! Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteA very clean looking quilt, nice
ReplyDeleteWhite is the color I most often use for backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteNeutrals are my favorite backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteNeutrals are my favorite, some with small prints.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you can't beat black but other times tone on tone or neutral is wonderful. I have a Twisted Log Cabin, black is great and a Red and White Vortex that I used a white Tone on Tone-perfect.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I have a favorite background. The quilt I just finished had grey, the quilt I am working on has a light gold. I know I will use these fabrics if I win, thanks.
ReplyDeletecork@pa.rr.com
My favorite background is using various low volume prints, usually grey on white. They read as a neutral, yet add some movement to the quilt.
ReplyDeleteI rarely use white - I like off white or snow but lately I have been using shades of grey...also love parchment - it all depends on the fabrics that are being used.
ReplyDeleteI have used white quite often, but I really want to try a dark background.
ReplyDeleteI like to use navy like as a background.
ReplyDeleteI like darker backgrounds, black or a dark color
ReplyDeleteMy most used background color is white but have also used other colors as well. Usually depends on the fabrics used to piece the blocks.
ReplyDeleteI use a lot of blue.
ReplyDeletecreams and off whites, and sometimes a cream background with a small print on it that goes with the colors in the block
ReplyDeleteI usually like white the best.
ReplyDeleteA shade of grey would be my 1st choice.
ReplyDeleteCall me a modern traditionalist, but I love white/neutrals.
ReplyDeleteI like to use white or cream for my background - these backgrounds allow the colored fabric to stand out without being overwhelming! Thank you, Susan
ReplyDeleteI love the simplicity of the pattern that makes it look so awesome. The colors really pop and the quilting doesn't take away from the pattern at all. It has been amazing to see all the different patterns using similar colors.
ReplyDeleteCall me boring, but it's usually white for me. Love the quilt!
ReplyDeleteI use Kona Snow most of all.
ReplyDeleteI like ash grey by Moda for a background when possible. rozz01 at cox dot net
ReplyDeleteYour design is brilliant! I like a light gray or an off white, something like Kona Snow, for a background. When I go scrappy, I enjoy working with an assortment of tone on tones.
ReplyDeleteLove that ladder quilt! I used to use white, white white. Then I only used black...loved the way colors pop against black. But lately, I have been using lots of light gray for backgrounds. It is my new fave. Fun blog hop! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! I use a lot of white in backgrounds but I want to start trying more in grey shades. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI like to use black.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite backgrounds are scrappy neutrals. Is scrappy a color? If I'm using a one fabric background I often like a pale grey because many fabrics pop on pale grey. And with the right fabrics I love an aqua background, so pretty.
ReplyDeleteUsually I use white or cream but have loved using the grunge neutrals. Working on getting out of the box- this neutrals bundle would help! Thanks for opportunity to win!
ReplyDeleteGrey is my favorite background.
ReplyDeleteI usually use white or cream.
ReplyDeletebarbkaup(at)(yahoo)(dot)(com)
Normally I use a light background. White, cream or a small print.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite background is white or off white.
ReplyDeletetstanulis@verizon.net
My Favorite background is off white! THANK YOU for Your Blog+this very neat Giveaway!
ReplyDeletemsstitcher1214@gmail.com
So far I haven't tried a quilt like this beautiful one, so my backgrounds tend to be assorted (for BOM).
ReplyDeleteI'm usually a few years behind the trend but lately I've used a lot of navy for backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteI've always used whites/creams for backgrounds, but lately I'm experimenting with using colors. Recently did one with blue, and I'm working on one now with a grey polka dot (still rather neutral, but I'm getting there!)
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is delightful! Thanks for sharing this. I usually like scrappy white backgrounds. Thanks for the chance to win this awesome bundle.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite background color is cream. Thanks for offering the giveaway. cknapp3626(at)sbcglobal(dot)net
ReplyDeleteYour modern quilt is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks you for sharing. I have used many colors for backgrounds but neutrals are my favorite. Thanks for offering the giveaway.
I've been trying out darker backgrounds, but lights are my favorites. Modern quilt designs are growing on me, now that I'm realizing there is so much open space for interesting quilting.
ReplyDeleteI like a busy background with small scale designs.
ReplyDeleteI usually use light grey but am starting to move to whites. Love all the patterns in this collection!
ReplyDeleteLove a white background
ReplyDeleteI usually use white or cream for backgrounds. I need to try some other colors to get out of my comfort zone.
ReplyDeleteI have always used a light neutral back ground. I like that for most quilts that require the darker fabrics to be shown. I am tired of boring solids though. I am hoping to take some big steps out of my comfy sewing chair and use light patterns for the back ground. These fabrics are divine! I just love Michael Miller fabrics the best
ReplyDeleteMy favorite background is white!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt and pattern!! My favorite background is probably grey or cream. Thanks for the chance!!
ReplyDeleteA lot depends on the fabrics I am using, but generally white or black.
ReplyDeleteFave background is probably a grey.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite background is cream - preferably scrappy. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteLoving light gray but my go to is cream.. happyness04431@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteRecently I've been using unexpected colors--bright red, deep coral--and they add a new element to the quilts's personalities.
ReplyDeleteLovely design and super quilting, and the spaces emphasise the ladder rungs. And the photo shoot settings, again they are winners.
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is a beauty! The colors are made to stand out! I like an off-white background to show off colors too.
ReplyDeleteI am new to quilting, and have not made many quilts yet. I like a white, navy, and dark gray so far.
ReplyDeletedifficult question, I like a background with a lot of contrast ... and I like low volume !
ReplyDeletethanks for the game !
I used to stick with white backgrounds or low volume mixes but, lately, I've been experimenting with softer solids. Light greens and blues are nice colors depending on the quilt design. sjvonfumetti at yahoo dot com
ReplyDeleteMy background choice depends on the recipient. I try to incorporate their favorite color if possible. For myself, I like white backgrounds and have started using white on white for a little extra punch.
ReplyDeleteMy background depends on the top, but I love use bright colors. Thanks for a chance to win 😃
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a very fun new pattern.
ReplyDeletenice pattern would look great w marine backround
ReplyDeleteI use many different colors for backgrounds, no favorite.
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern. I like Kona White and Silver for backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color to use is actually a White on White. There are so many varieties available that in my opinion it just helps add a tad bit more excitement, movement or even beauty into a quilt top. I have just fallen in love with the Raspberry, Teal and Yellow that everyone is using in their quilts, I could see using these and all of the other solids as backgrounds also. Your quilt is awesome! Thank you for sharing and the great give away! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color to use as as a background is white-cream with just a hint of color design so that there is some movement to the piece. It can be a tone one tone or an actual design to it. dquilterguy48329 (at) prodigy (dot) net
ReplyDeleteI really need to work on adding neutrals to my stash. They are the last thing I am drawn to....and that leaves me hunting when it comes to working on projects.
ReplyDeleteI have been using white as a background, but my favorite would be a blue or purple if it fit with the other fabric I am using.
ReplyDeletePetuniakr@aol.com
originally I used alot of black for background, blues was next and now I lean towards the neutrals since I now do more free motion quilting and that gives lots negative space
ReplyDeleteWhites and ecrus are my favorite background colors. Congratulations on your wonderful Quilt Theory venture.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. And no quilter can have too many neutrals. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI realize I need to branch out to other neutrals, but I use a very white white.
ReplyDeleteI use whites or creams usually for backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteI love white quilt backgrounds. Thank you for a chance to win some wonderful fabric :)
ReplyDeleteBlue but I generally use white or creams
ReplyDeleteI like to use Ivory, but I'm trying to move towards a bit of variety, although that just means the current quilt I'm planning uses black! Hrm, maybe I better get a bit more experimental!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite backgrounds are natural linen-like color.
ReplyDeleteWhite is my go to...but I just used crossweave for the first time and love it!
ReplyDeleteI've been using either white or grey as a background lately.
