Cloud9 generously sponsored this New Block Blog Hop featuring their Cirrus Solids and is also generously sponsoring a fat quarter giveaway (at bottom of post).
All of the quilt blocks featured this week are going to be assembled into quilts and donated to charity. Here are today's participants, but be sure to visit Yvonne's group (posted yesterday) and Stephanie's group (will post tomorrow)!
The blocks are each 12" x 12" (finished) and use techniques from traditional piecing, paper piecing, applique, and more!

MY BLOCK - The UFO Block
The UFO block is a very simple and easy block with an improv look to it.
Cutting
Amazon,
Sky, Iris, Lilac: Cut each color into 7-8 strips varying between 1 and 1
1/4" wide by about 4" long
Shadow: Cut the
following pieces:
2 rectangles 3 ½" x 8 ½"
1 rectangles 2" x 8 ½"
1 rectangles 3 ¾" x 12 ¾"
1 rectangles 1 ¾" x 12 ¾"
Piecing
1. Sew the Amazon, Sky, Iris, Lilac
strips together along their long edges until you have 2 chunks of striped
fabric about 9" long. (Each of my chunks of fabric contained 13 or 14
different strips).
2. Trim each chunk
into a rectangle 3" x 8 ½".
(For a different look, you could sew the strips together
wonky, or just use a single fabric with a print instead.)
3. Arrange and sew together the fabric pieces as shown
below. The block will measure 13"
x 13", trim down to 12 ½" x 12 ½".

I really like the gentle introduction to improv that you use here, Cheryl! And the off center nature of the block has a lot of fun potential for different quilt top layouts. All the negative space would be fun to quilt, too. I am really excited to see all the great blocks today. :)
ReplyDeleteI can see this as one for me, and hope I have some batiks that will fit the bill for fabric choices. Love that grey as a wonderful contrast.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely colors! Great tutorial,Thanks!

Comment #2, I have hopped my way down the blog list, and everyone has designed a fabulous block, I have saved lots to do later on, and now the $64 question? Did I enter the Rafflecoptor? Maybe not, so here goes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great scrap busting block (done with simplicity)! Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl, Thank you for the amount of work you put into all of this. It is much appreciated. That is a nice scrap buster block you have thought up =)

ReplyDeleteThank you for introducing me to improv!! Love the colors!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great introduction to improv... I haven't done a lot of improv. This block showcases these beautiful fabrics so nicely.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great block. It would be perfect for leftover scraps!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun block, Cheryl! It would make for a great scrap quilt too :)
ReplyDeleteI love the name for your block and how all the bright colors are the flashing lights on this UFO :)
ReplyDeleteI like this a lot. I might finally give improv a try with this one.
ReplyDeleteI always love the wonderful graphic quality of your designs. This is no exception!
ReplyDeleteVery fun block Cheryl! You, Yvonne and Stephanie are also inspirational to me in your quilting your blocks for (a) great cause. I feel happy to be part of such a thoughtful quilting community.
ReplyDeleteVery cool and interesting colors you've put together in this block! I wouldn't think to use them together, but they get along nicely! :) This would be a great block to use up scraps and one I need to keep in mind.
ReplyDeleteCool block Cheryl! Thanks so much for hosting this hop and putting together the quilt. I'm anxious to see what it looks like!
ReplyDeleteIt's really a challenge for me to work with such a limited palette. I guess I have to turn my thinking around and say there are five whole colors to work with. If I could just add a zillion fabrics in those colors I'd be happier about limiting myself to those colors! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI really like this. Thanks for hosting again. It's been fun.
ReplyDeleteI like the shadow fabric and how it lets the colors sing. This is a simple but effective block and would stand out in any quilt. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteIn all the craze of trying to see all the blocks I missed yours somehow. It's a great block Cheryl. I like it's graphic simple look...it really fits these fabrics.
ReplyDeleteGreat block Cheryl! Thanks for organising and hosting this hop - it's been brilliant!
ReplyDeleteLove your gorgeous block, Cheryl! The layout showcases the colors beautifully! Thanks for helping host the blog hop - I've had such a fantastic experience. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this color palette. Not one I would have thought of and it's so berry delicious. I need to go check out all the blocks being made. They will make beautiful quilts.
ReplyDeleteLovely, lovely. The colors are beautiful. I have achieved the More Fabric Than I Can Use in My Lifetime status. So I won't enter the giveaway. Better chances for everybody else.
ReplyDeleteVery nice design! I've been out of town all week so just finished Monday's posts and starting on Tuesday. So far-no duplicates! Lots of creativity. I do have new appreciation for pattern designers now after finishing my block for this hop. It's not as easy as it looks to design one and write up the tutorial. Thanks for a great design here and pattern. Karen
ReplyDeleteGreat design...simple to construct but it packs a lot of punch! I so want to make this block!
