Foothills Charity Quilt Finish

As part of the Foothills Piecemakers Quilt Guild, we make philanthropy quilts with members making blocks, making quilt tops, and/or quilting the quilts for various charities.  I did not make this quilt top but offered to quilt and bind it. The quilt was made by Penny Jones using some fun Cotton & Steel.

Charity quilts are wonderful quilts to practice new quilting and binding techniques. It is a win for the quilter to practice a skill and a win for the guild to have some of the quilt tops finished into quilts. For this quilt, I quilted a spiral in the 4-block sections of the quilt and a meander in the long rectangular pieces.  It was quick and easy and just a little extra compared to a simple meander.  I also sewed the binding on completely by machine, it was great to practice this new-to-me skill.

This quilt is now off to a good home through the guild's charity program.

  4. This is great! I haven't done the machine binding yet, I usually finish it by hand- was there a tutorial or link that you found helpful for learning how to do that?

  5. I love the way the spirals grab my attention! I've been machine binding my quilts for about a year now, I think, and I love it. My bindings still aren't perfect, but they're pretty good.

  12. I machine bound a charity quilt for the first time recently as well. This is a really pretty quilt and I love those spirals as well. I agree that charity quilts are great for practicing quilting. I need to write a newsletter post to encourage my guild members to quilt some of our charity quilts and I think I'll quote your sentence above if that's o.k. with you CheryL.

  15. Very cool Charity Quilt, Cheryl. I like the quilting on it, do you do your own free motion, long arm quilting or have your quilts quilted by others?
