Half Circle Mirror and Feature Article - Make Modern Issue 12

Today I am so excited to show you one of my secret quilt finishes from this spring! The quilt is called Half Circle Mirror and it appears in newest issue of Make Modern Issue 12, out today.  The magazine also contains a featured designer article about me, written by Anne of Hudson Valley Quilts.

Half Circle Mirror combines paper pieced blocks and negative space for a dramatic, geometric quilt design.

For my version of Half Circle Mirror, I used Kona Cotton Solids by Robert Kaufman in Pepper, Charcoal, Titanium, and White.

Johellen George of Cabin Quilt Studio did the beautiful quilting on this quilt.  She is a member of one of my local guilds and does amazing work.  I think that the quilting is reminiscent of the surface of a lake which plays well with the reflection theme of the piecing design.

The quilt is paper pieced, I really like designing paper pieced patterns as you can create so many different angles and quilt blocks.  With all of the negative space it was not too much paper piecing to do :)

I love the Make Modern magazine, the magazine is so full of great quilts and inspiration. There are 14 projects in this issue as well as other features and articles. Check out Make Modern Issue 12!

Ocean Bricks - Make Modern Issue 9

Today I am so excited to show you one of my secret quilt finishes from late year! The quilt is called Ocean Bricks and it appears in Make Modern Issue 9.

Ocean Bricks is a great first quilt pattern to try improvisational (also called improv) curved piecing. Improv curves are very forgiving and give a distinct look to the quilt while looking more difficult than they really are.  The blocks are staggered so there are almost no seams to match in the quilt :)

Ocean Bricks has a value gradient down the length of the quilt to mimic the sea getting darker as you go deeper into the ocean. For my version of Ocean Bricks, I used Kona Cotton Solids from the Grecian Waters colorway by Robert Kaufman. The quilt is baby sized, finishing up at 38½” x 42½”.

For the quilting, I used gently curved, overlapping horizontal lines using light to dark thread colors to blend in with the fabric colors. I created the binding using leftovers from the quilt top fabrics so that the binding mimicked the gradient of the quilt top.

I love the Make Modern magazine, the magazine is so full of great quilts and inspiration. There are 14 projects in this issue as well as other features and articles. Check out Make Modern Issue 9!

Yesterday - a quilt for Make Modern

Today I am so excited to show you one of my quilt finishes from January!  The quilt is called Yesterday and it appears in Make Modern Issue 4.

Yesterday is a modern interpretation on a classic quilt block dating back to the late 1800’s, the “double hour glass” block which is also sometimes referred to as the “wondering lover” block.  The quilt measures about 65" x 65".

I "modernized" the blocks by enlarging the block so that the block became the entire quilt top.  For my version of Yesterday, I used Kona Cotton Solids in White and Black by Robert Kaufman.

I decided to quilt all of the white areas of the quilt in a 1 inch grid and quilted the black triangles in a dense back and forth pattern.  I made some ghost white triangles in the background mirroring the black triangles.  There was a lot of marking and thread burying in this quilt.  I used 50 wt. cotton Aurifil thread in white and black.

The quilt is backed with a Carolyn Friedlander extra wide fabric.

I love the Make Modern magazine, the magazine is so full of great quilts and inspiration.  There are 14 projects in this issue as well as other features and articles.  Check out Make Modern Issue 4!
