Morewood Mystery ++ My Version

Have you seen any Morewood Mystery quilt tops or finished quilts yet?  I am enjoying seeing the first finishes with all of the different fabrics and colors each quilter used.

You can see all of the Morewood Mystery quilts as they post in the Meadow Mist Designs Facebook Group and on social media using the hashtag #morewoodmysteryquilt.

All of the information and instructions for the free, monthly Morewood Mystery quilt can be found on the Morewood Mystery Page and I have a full pdf version of the pattern available in my shop.

Here is my version of the Morewood Mystery...

FABRICS, BATTING, AND THREAD

For my version, I used four speckle fabrics from Ruby Star on a background of Bella white, all from Moda fabrics.

I used Aurifil 50 wt soft white thread (2021) for both the piecing and quilting and the batting is Warm & White by the Warm Company.

For the backing, I used a gray Anna Maria Horner print that I had a bolt of.  I had originally picked out a navy print, but once the quilt top was together, I decided that I wanted a softer and lighter backing for the quilt.

QUILTING DESIGN

My main goal for the quilting was to add texture throughout the quilt and especially the white background so I decided to go with an allover design.

One of my favorite designs to quilt is a large paisley swirl type design.  It is larger in scale so it goes quickly, adding texture without taking away from the piecing design.

MANY THANKS

I would like to thank Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl for her amazing tech editing skills. I would also like to thank Shelly Folkerts and Tish Stemple for testing the pattern for me to make sure that the quilt pattern was easy to follow and error free.

  Petal Units

Make 30 petal units.

1. Arrange the following units and pieces according to the diagram.
2 A/bg HST units 3" x 3"
1 single Irish unit 3" x 3"
1 fabric A square 3" x 3"

2. Sew pieces and blocks into rows pressing seams open or away from the HST units. Each row
should measure 3" x 5 ½".

Morewood Mystery ++ Irish Units

I love strip piecing, do you?

Welcome to the October instructions for the Morewood Mystery Quilt along. There is plenty of time to join in on the quilt along!  You can find all of the information about the Morewood Mystery, including schedule, past instructions, links to the Facebook group, sneak peek, and more at the Morewood Mystery Page.

We are going to be making some Irish Units this month using strip piecing.

Now that the Mystery Quilt has ended, you can find a easy to print, full version of the pattern for sale in my pattern shop.

Irish Units

Make 15 double Irish units 2 ½" x 2 ½".

1. Sew together 1 fabric C strip 1 ½" x WOF and 1 bg strip 1 ½" x WOF along their long sides to make a strip set 2 ½" x WOF, pressing the seam open or towards the darker fabric. Repeat to make a total of 2 strip sets.

Tip: I find that pressing the seam open keeps the seam in these narrow strip sets straighter.

2. Cut the strip sets into 30 units 1 ½" x 2 ½" (each strip can yield 26 segments).

3. Sew together 2 units from step 2, pressing the seam open, to make a double Irish unit 2 ½" x 2 ½".  Repeat to make a total of 15 double Irish units.

Combine 2 fabric C strips 1 ½" x WOF and 2 bg strips 2" x WOF to make 30 single Irish units 3" x 3".

1. Sew together 1 fabric C strip 1 ½" x WOF and 1 bg strip 2" x WOF along their long sides to make a strip set 3" x WOF, pressing the seam open or towards the darker fabric. Repeat to make a total of 2 strip sets.

Tip: I find that pressing the seam open keeps the seam in these narrow strip sets straighter.

2. Cut the strip sets into 30 units 1 ½" x 3" (each strip can yield 26 segments).

3. Sew together 1 unit from step 2 and a bg rectangle 2" x 3", pressing the seam open, to make a single Irish unit 3" x 3". Repeat to make a total of 30 single Irish units.

And now without further ado....July's instructions...remember, you have an entire month to get your fabric, the next set of instructions comes out on Thursday, August 6th.

Fabric Requirements

The Morewood Mystery quilt is a lap sized quilt and contains 4 different fabrics plus a background fabric in the quilt top:

Fabric Selection Tips

  • It is suggested that a solid or a tone-on-tone print that reads as a solid be used for the background fabric.
  • Due to the finished fabric piece sizes and piecing methods for the quilt top, it is recommended that fabric prints used have a non-directional design.
  • Each of the fabrics may be made using scraps of similar colors instead of a single fabric if desired. Generally, the pieces within the quilt will be 6" x 6" or smaller.
  • Within the quilt, all of the A, B, C, and D fabrics are adjacent the background fabric, but none of the A, B, C, or D fabrics are next to each other.
  • In these instructions, the background is shown as white, but the quilt design looks very good with other colors and tones of background (light, medium, and dark) as long as the A-D fabrics have good contrast with the background color.
PATTERN NOTES:
  • Width of fabrics (WOF) for this pattern is assumed to be 40".
  • A scant ¼" (a thread width smaller than ¼") seam is to be used throughout the construction of the quilt unless otherwise instructed.
