Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup - October 2021

Welcome to October's Favorite Finish Monthly Linkup!

Happy Halloween!  I wish you good trick or treating weather and plenty of candy if you are participating.  As my kids are getting older, I think that this might be one of my last years to go around with them.

I have always wanted a Halloween quilt and my favorite finish for this month is a Halloween version of Swamp Rabbit Trail (pattern to be released soon).  This is the alternative layout of the blocks and I thought they looked a little like witches hats :)  I used my Sweet and Spooky (and Sweeter and Spookier) from Art Gallery fat quarters I have been collecting and then even used an included panel and fat quarters to piece a backing.

Have you ever made a Halloween quilt?

Ready for the party?

Reedy River Falls Quilt Pattern

Today is my day as part of the blog hop hosted by byAnnie called #sewPINK to celebrate October as breast cancer awareness month!

Here is Reedy River Falls, a celebration of pink fabrics and half square triangles!

FABRICS & MATERIALS

The cover quilt is made with:

  • Pink fabrics in light tones and darker tones.  I picked all of these out of my scrap bin and stash and went with pinks that were more purple in tone.
  • Moda Bella Solids in Black (and a few bits of an old Sweetwater black dictionary print)
  • Moda Bella Solids in White

I do not make scrappy quilts very often, but I find one of easiest ways to use scraps for me is to use scraps with similar colors as one grouping of fabrics.

I used my favorite Warm & White batting by the Warm Company and Aurifil thread for the piecing.  For the backing, I went with a solid burgundy fabric from FreeSpirit I had on hand.

QUILTING PLAN

My initial plan for quilting was to echo the diagonal seam lines of the half square triangles to reinforce the diamond shapes.  Once I finished the straight line quilting, I felt that the quilting was a little too spaced apart, but the thought of adding more straight lines was not appealing (the quilt had to be turned so much during quilting).

So I figured that I would add some free motion quilting between the straight lines.  This added such texture to the quilt and went quicker than I thought it would.  You can really see the quilting on the solid backing, it makes it look like a whole cloth quilt :)

ABOUT THE PATTERN NAME

So how did this quilt get its name?  I started out trying to think of a name with the word "diamonds" in it, but found that every name I came up already was a quilt pattern.

Reedy River Falls is a waterfall and the jewel of downtown Greenville, South Carolina where I live. Because the quilt contains diamond (or jewel) shapes I named it after the falls.

PATTERN DETAILS

Reedy River Falls is written at a confident beginner level and is scrap friendly (but can also be made with yardage).  The half square triangles combine to form a diamond-like design in the quilt top.

The pattern contains instructions to make three sizes: lap and twin.  The design is the same between the lap and twin sizes, with the twin size using larger sized blocks than the lap.

Once you make an Reedy River Falls quilt of your own, you can share it via social media using the hashtag #ReedyRiverFallsQuilt.

MANY THANKS

I would like to thank Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl for her amazing tech editing skills and  for helping me decide on colors, quilting designs, and more.  I would also like to thank the Warm Company for the Warm & White batting (my favorite!).

Macaron Mystery ++ Flying Geese Units

Let's make some flying geese :)

Welcome to the third month of instructions for the Macaron Mystery Quilt!  This month we will be making some flying geese units using the no-waste method.

There is plenty of time to join in on the quilt along, we are just getting started! Last month we cut our fabric for the quilt top.  You can find all of the information about the Macaron Mystery, including schedule, past instructions, links to the Facebook group, sneak peek, and more at the Macaron Mystery Page.

The Macaron Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that will run from July 2021 through April 2022 with a set of directions revealed the first Thursday of every month. The Macaron Mystery is a lap size design, that can easily be made larger with the addition of borders.

Now that the Macaron Mystery quilt along has ended,
you can find a easy to print, full version of the Macaron Mystery
pattern for sale in my pattern shop.

    Flying Geese Units

    Combine 15 fabric B squares 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" and 60 Bg2 squares 2 ⅞" x 2 ⅞" to make 60 B/Bg2 flying geese units 2 ½" x 4 ½" using the No Waste Flying Geese method.

    1.  Place 2 of the Bg2 squares 2 ⅞" x 2 ⅞" on opposite corners of a Fabric B square 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" right sides together.  The Bg2 squares will overlap in the middle of the Fabric B square.  Use a removable marking device to make a line diagonally across the Bg2 squares (solid line).

    2.  Sew a scant ¼" seam on both sides of the marked line (dotted lines) and then cut on the marked line (solid line).

    3.  Press the seams towards the Bg2 squares. You will have two of these intermediate units.  For each intermediate unit, place a Bg2 square 2 ⅞" x 2 ⅞" on the corner of the fabric B square right sides together.  Draw a diagonal line on the Bg2 square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on both sides of the marked line (dotted lines).

    4.  Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards the Bg2 squares.  Each set of 1 fabric B square and 4 Bg2 squares will yield 4 B/Bg2 flying geese.

    5. Repeat steps 1-4 to make a total of 60 B/Bg2 flying geese units.  Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim blocks to 2 ½" x 4 ½" if necessary, making sure there is ¼" between the point of the goose triangle and the edge of the unit.

Many thanks to the generous sponsors of the Macaron Mystery Quilt!
