I am excited to be sharing with you two new patterns this week along with a collaboration with FreeSpirit Fabrics. Today, I will be highlighting Raindrops, tomorrow I will share Chloe, and Friday I will share more about the collaboration.
Raindrops is a super fun, charm pack, and very beginner friendly pattern. It is the perfect pattern to whip up for a quick finish and to highlight some of your favorite charm packs. I thought that the quilt design reminded me of raindrops falling from the sky so that is how it earned its name.
You can find Raindrops (and Chloe) on an introductory sale each for $10 through September 26th. In my pattern shop, you can combine these intro sale prices with coupon codes for more savings. Use the code "TWOPATTERNS" for $2 off 2 patterns and "THREEPATTERNS" for $4 off 3 patterns.
FABRICS & MATERIALS
Working with FreeSpirit, they were kind enough to send me the fabrics for this project. My version of Raindrops used the True Colors collection by Tula Pink and the Tula Pink Dragon's Breath Solids in Tanzanite for the background, all by FreeSpirit (this might be a hint about the collaboration :) I love the bright colors of the True Colors collection and paired against this wonderful, rich eggplant color just pop.
I love a striped binding and Tula has some great stripes where each stripe is ½" so it really makes a visual impact. I cut mine on the bias to get the diagonal look to the binding.
For the backing, I used Pinkerville wide back in Purple Sateen. The colors went really well with the prints on the front and all of FreeSpirit's sateen backings have a such a smooth finish and great feel. I love not have to piece a back too!
I used my favorite batting, Warm and White from the Warm Company, and Aurifil thread for the piecing and quilting.
If you would like to make this exact quilt you can find all of the fabrics to make your own "kit" in one shop, Hartland Quilt Shop, at Etsy (affiliate links):
QUILTING PLAN AND DESIGN
Because Raindrops is a beginner level pattern, I wanted to use a quilting design that was simpler and thought about using an allover design. But when I started thinking about thread color, I really wanted to match the tanzanite background but did not want a dark purple thread on the prints. So I can up with what I would consider semi-custom, the prints getting one design and the background getting a second design.
In the print squares I quilted a wishbone design using a light cream thread. I was able to quilt each diagonal column of squares together, only having to tie off threads at the beginning and end of each diagonal column.
Next I filled in the background with a stipple (also called a meander) design using a matching Aurifil thread 2545 in 50 wt. My goal was to give the background some texture and use a design were it was easy to move around blocks and into corners.
