Happy New Year! Let's kick off 2026 with some mystery sewing. Welcome to the January instructions for the Magnificent Mystery Quilt Along!
This is the last month that we will be sewing units. Next month will be the last set of instructions that will include the blocks and quilt top and then we will have two full months to finish up our quilts.
The Magnificent Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that runs from July 2025 through April 2026 to make a throw sized quilt about 60 ½" x 72 ½" with a set of instructions posted the first Thursday of every month. The quilt pattern is at an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).
- The directions and all of the other information related to the mystery quilt can always be found on the Magnificent Mystery Home Page.
- You can find all of the pdf downloads in the Magnificent Mystery Shop Page (including a sneak peek of the design).

Large Flying Geese Units
1. Place 2 bg squares 3" x 3" on opposite corners of a fabric E square 5 ⅜" x 5 ⅜" right sides together. The bg squares will overlap in the middle of the fabric E square.
Draw a line diagonally across the back of the bg squares (solid line).
2. Sew a scant ¼" seam on either side of the marked line (dotted lines) and then cut on the marked line (solid line).
3. Press seams towards the bg fabric. (You will have two of these intermediate units.)
For each intermediate unit, place a fabric D square 3" x 3" on the corner of the fabric E triangle right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line on the back of the bg square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on either side of the marked line (dotted lines).
4. Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards bg fabric.
5. Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim the flying geese units to 2 ½" x 4 ½" if necessary, making sure there is ¼" between the point of the fabric E triangle and the top edge of the unit.
One fabric E square, 2 fabric D squares, and 4 bg squares will yield 4 flying geese units
2 ½" x 4 ½", two of each fabric orientation.
6. Repeat to make a total of 8 large flying geese units 2 ½" x 4 ½" (4 of each fabric orientation).
Small Flying Geese Units
1. Place 2 bg squares 2 ½" x 2 ½" on opposite corners of a fabric E square 4 ⅜" x 4 ⅜" right sides together.
One fabric E square, 2 fabric D squares, and 4 bg squares will yield 4 flying geese units 2" x 3 ½", 2 of each fabric orientation.
6. Repeat to make a total of 12 small flying geese units 2" x 3 ½" (6 of each fabric orientation).

I'm really behind, but it's still been a very fun mystery!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun quilt along. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt tops and quilts
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl, I believe that there is an error in the small flying geese blocks. In step 3 it says to place a fabric D 3”x3” on the intermediate blocks. I believe they should be the 2 1/2” fabric D squares.
