✂ 2026 Stash Busting Quilt Along - Schedule ✂

๐ŸŽ‰ I’m so excited to be sewing along with you — and finally turning some of those shelf, tote, and drawer fabrics into quilts!

We’ll be making one (or more!) of the following patterns: Scenic Waypoint, Board and Batten, Looking Glass, and Sea Star.

Below you’ll find a simple sewing schedule for each pattern. These are just general guidelines — feel free to sew at your own pace if you’re faster or slower. No pressure and no rules here! ✂️๐Ÿ’•

Scenic Waypoint has the most piecing and will take a bit longer, while the other three are quicker, simpler makes.

We’ll officially kick off the quilt along in one week on Thursday, January 22.

2026 Stash Busting Quilt Along!

๐ŸŽ‰ I asked, and the answer was a resounding YES—let’s sew from our stash! ๐ŸŽ‰

I was blown away by the response to the quilt along survey—over 1,675 quilters chimed in, and the overwhelming consensus was clear: it's time for a stash-busting quilt along!

I had asked for your opinion on six patterns—Board and Batten, Arrow Point Path, Check Plus, Scenic Waypoint, Sea Star, and Looking Glass - all beginner-friendly designs that work beautifully with fat quarters and scraps.

The votes are in and Board and Batten and Scenic Waypoint were the clear favorites, but Sea Star and Looking Glass were right behind and basically tied.

So, I was aiming for three patterns, but with the four being so close, Let’s include all four! That way, you can pick the pattern that best suits your fat quarters and scraps.

How the quilt along will work:

๐Ÿ—“ Kickoff Date: Thursday, January 22nd (plenty of time to grab a pattern & pick fabrics).

⏳ Duration: 7 weeks, wrapping up on March 12th.  I'll post schedules next week for each of the four designs to keep you on track.

๐ŸŽ‰ Final Parade: Share your quilt top or finished quilt at the end.

๐Ÿšซ No Prizes—Just Fun: This is all about using what we have & enjoying the process.

๐Ÿ“ Scrap Busting Posts: I'll be posting tips on fabric organization, scrap-busting ideas, and sewing techniques throughout the sew along.

๐Ÿ”น The Challenge: Try to create your entire quilt—top, binding, and backing—using only fabric from your stash! No new fabric purchases needed.

This is going to be a fun, low-pressure quilt along, and I’d love to have you join in! Who’s in? ๐Ÿงต✨

Scenic Waypoint

Scenic Waypoint has three sizes: baby, throw, and twin and fat quarter friendly. Scenic Waypoint is confident beginner friendly, but is the most time consuming of the options to make.

Scenic Waypoint - Digital
Scenic Waypoint - Printed

Board and Batten

Board and Batten is a super versatile design with instructions for using fat quarters, charm packs, layer cakes, and scraps. The pattern contains 4 sizes: baby, throw, twin, and queen.

Board and Batten - Digital
Board and Batten - Printed

Sea Star

Sea Star is one my older, but most favorite patterns. The stars appear when the blocks are sewn together. This fat quarter friendly pattern contains baby, lap, twin, queen, and king sizes.

Looking Glass

If you are looking for a quicker finish that is super fun, then look no further than Looking Glass. I rarely make a quilt twice, but I have actually made 6 versions of this pattern in different sizes. This fat quarter (and scrap) friendly pattern contains baby, toddler, lap, twin, and queen sizes.

Magnificent Mystery Quilt ++ Part 7 ++ Flying Geese Units

Happy New Year!  Let's kick off 2026 with some mystery sewing.  Welcome to the January instructions for the Magnificent Mystery Quilt Along!

This is the last month that we will be sewing units.  Next month will be the last set of instructions that will include the blocks and quilt top and then we will have two full months to finish up our quilts.

The Magnificent Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that runs from July 2025 through April 2026 to make a throw sized quilt about 60 ½" x 72 ½" with a set of instructions posted the first Thursday of every month.  The quilt pattern is at an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).

Easy to Print PDF Instructions

If you would like easy to print instructions for the November instructions: Part 5, they can found as a free download through my shop:

Large Flying Geese Units

1. Place 2 bg squares 3" x 3" on opposite corners of a fabric E square 5 ⅜" x 5 ⅜" right sides together. The bg squares will overlap in the middle of the fabric E square.

Draw a line diagonally across the back of the bg squares (solid line).

2. Sew a scant ¼" seam on either side of the marked line (dotted lines) and then cut on the marked line (solid line).

3. Press seams towards the bg fabric. (You will have two of these intermediate units.)

For each intermediate unit, place a fabric D square 3" x 3" on the corner of the fabric E triangle right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the fabric D square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on either side of the marked line (dotted lines).

4. Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards fabric D.

5. Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim the flying geese units to 2 ½" x 4 ½" if necessary, making sure there is ¼" between the point of the fabric E triangle and the top edge of the unit.

One fabric E square, 2 fabric D squares, and 4 bg squares will yield 4 flying geese units
2 ½" x 4 ½", two of each fabric orientation.

6. Repeat to make a total of 8 large flying geese units 2 ½" x 4 ½" (4 of each fabric orientation).

Small Flying Geese Units

1. Place 2 bg squares 2 ½" x 2 ½" on opposite corners of a fabric E square 4 ⅜" x 4 ⅜" right sides together.

For each intermediate unit, place a fabric D square 2 ½" x 2 ½" on the corner of the fabric E triangle right sides together.

Draw a diagonal line on the back of the fabric D square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on either side of the marked line (dotted lines).

4. Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards fabric D.

5. Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim the flying geese units to 2" x 3 ½" if necessary, making sure there is ¼" between the point of the fabric E triangle and the top edge of the unit.

One fabric E square, 2 fabric D squares, and 4 bg squares will yield 4 flying geese units 2" x 3 ½", 2 of each fabric orientation.

6. Repeat to make a total of 12 small flying geese units 2" x 3 ½" (6 of each fabric orientation).
