The book focuses on using your stash and is divided into two sections, 10 applique patterns and 10 traditionally pieced patterns, with each of the designs being shown in both warm and cool colors. Child's Play Quilts has a great resource section in the front to help organize your stash as well as instructions for basic quilt making skills.
There were a number of quilts I was interested in making and I chose Fox Hunt, a traditionally pieced design. My co-worker is expecting his second child in May so I figured that I could make Fox Hunt for them. Here is the version from the book:
He and his wife are not finding out the sex of their baby, so I picked out some red, black, and mustard prints for the fabrics. It kind of reminded me of Mickey and Minnie mouse so hopefully they will like it.
The quilt came together pretty quickly and I love the addition of the fox faces to a couple of the blocks that Stacey teaches in the book. I used some black Aurifil thread in the thick 12wt to embroider the eyes and nose.
I used one of my favorite (and quickest) quilting design, the meander, on the quilt and then finished the binding completely by machine (both for speed and for wash durability).
I will be gifting this quilt next month to my co-worker at his baby shower, I hope he likes it! Have you made a gender neutral quilt recently? What colors did you use?

Wow, what an awesome quilt for your co-worker. Those fox faces are super cute. I think it's perfectly gender neutral and is sure to be well loved by the family. And the book sounds like it is packed with information; having the quilts in 2 colorways equals a LOT of quilts!
ReplyDeleteI really like this. I haven't made a gender neutral quilt yet, so far I have always waited to find out, even if that means when the baby is born. x
ReplyDeleteThe detail of the faces is such a thoughtful addition. I'm sure this baby quilt will be well received!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Love the random fox face. Since I have such trouble sewing to a deadline, I've not made any baby quilts as yet. Maybe one day when I'm not so busy with work.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun little quilt! I really like the colour palette you went with - perfect gender neutral quilt. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is just adorable Cheryl! I love the colours scheme you did too, and the fox face here and there? SO clever! btw me TOO on the loving a soothing rhythmic meander. :-)
ReplyDeleteSuper Adorable! The colors you used are fantastic. I've tended towards turquoise and red for neutral.
ReplyDeleteTruly adorable, Cheryl. Love your fabric choices. I’m looking forward to exploring the other hoppers sites to see more.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful quilt, so bright, lovely
ReplyDeleteThe fox faces are sooo cute! It's a gorgeous quilt, the baby is going to look so cute wrapped in it, or dragging it around the house!
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I'd have thought to put the mustard with the black, white and red, but it works really well. It's great for a gender neutral quilt and those foxes make it absolutely adorable!
ReplyDeleteYour friends & their child will love the quilt.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet quilt with the little faces!
ReplyDeleteThe detail of the fox faces is what makes this pattern, it is really sweet. About a year ago I made a gender neutral quilt for my niece. I used mustard yellow, teal blue, burgundy and a deep rust color. It was a simple patchwork on point and she loved it. She had a boy which was fun after having had two girls.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is darling! I would think they'd love it! I've made one gender neutral, and I used pale yellows.
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful!! I love the colors you chose!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great quilt. Your embroidery is awesome and I like that it is only on a few of the faces. The new parents (and baby) should love this quilt.
ReplyDeleteI have a nephew and his wife who are expecting in Sept and they to want to be surprised by the baby's gender as well, so she has requested a quilt in blues and greens, as they both swim in the ocean and the baby's room will be green. She has picked out a quilt from the book Southwest Modern that I will be modifying a bit to make it crib size. Your quilt is just delightful! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful quilt and the fabric combo is an eye catching.Great job!!
ReplyDeleteCute quilt -- like your fabric choices.
ReplyDeleteI love that quilt. I haven't yet made any child's quilt but I will need to very soon.
ReplyDeleteVery nice I so Love bright colors... happyness04431@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute quilt. I love the faces on the foxes.
ReplyDeleteCute foxes! I like green for a gender-neutral quilt.
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute! I love the little embroidered faces!
ReplyDeleteThis pattern is adorable. Your color and print choices really made the design pop.
ReplyDeleteThe Fox Hunt pattern is the cutest! I love your choice of colors. I think gender neutral quilts are difficult. Mine always end up leaning a little bit to the girly side. Your choice looks good!
