One of those blocks was a 24" square test block I made for the Midnight Mystery Quilt (the mystery pattern from 2 years ago).
The block itself was a little too small for a quilt so I added a 5" white border to extend the background, making the quilt 34" square. I love this size for a baby quilt, big enough for a baby or small child but still small enough to easily quilt and use a single width piece of fabric for the backing.
I quilted the quilt using matching Aurifil colors and different quilting motifs for each of the section of the quilt.
I felt that with all of the white background, the quilt needed a strong border so I cut the binding at 3 ¼" wide versus my normal 2 ½". The quilt is backed with a fun Tula Pink blue print with snails.
The mini midnight mystery quilt will be donated through my local MQG (the Greenville Modern Quilt Guild) to the Greenville Hospital System where it will go to a child who has been removed from their home.
I am glad to get this work-in-progress finished and off to a new deserving home :)

You are off to a good 2018 start. I hear ya on liking backings that fit the width of fabric! I also like quilting the small ones. And I like your quilting decisions on this one. claire aka knitnkwilt
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable! I am also always finagling baby quilts to be narrow enough for a single width of fabric. The quilting on this is just perfect as well!
ReplyDeleteLove how this block turned out! Quilting is perfect.
ReplyDeleteWow it's beautiful! I absolutely love that binding, how it matches a fabric inside and sets it off superbly.
ReplyDeleteI really love that fun Tula Pink snail fabric. Congratulations for turning an orphan block into such a lovely quilt, and I hope it brings a child some comfort.
ReplyDeleteThis will surely bring comfort to a child. What a great cause to sew for.
ReplyDeleteLove the backing fabric -- really pretty colors. Bet it feels good to finish that sample block up!
Beautiful! What a great way to use up those test pieces.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful use for an orphan block. I love the backing fabric, perfect for a childs quilt and the binding sets it off beautifully. On top of all that it is going to a wonderful cause, perfect.
ReplyDeleteI just love this block! And I love when we take our 'orphans' and give them new life. And...to top it all off it'll be going to a child. What is better than that?! Great start to the new year!
ReplyDeleteIt's also the perfect size for a car blankie! LOVE the backing you paired with it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely way to start the year, both in the finish and in the intention for the quilt - I love the choice of snail trail for the back when that's exactly what the dark blue squares look like to me!
ReplyDeleteLovely finish!
ReplyDeleteLovely! I particularity love the colors. And I absolutely loved that QAL and the pattern!
ReplyDeleteLovely bright colours, a super way to use the block, and a gift to be loved by someone at a sad time.
ReplyDeleteI really love what you did with this single block!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful and what a great way to use a block that was sitting in your sewing room, unused! I’ve been toying with the idea of making an extra block from all of my quilts this year and then putting them together as a sampler. But you’ve now inspired me to make the extra blocks and turn them into mini quilts for my sewing room. I give away from of my quilts so this would be a nice way to “keep” a small part of each one for me. :-)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty. Those colors go so well together. Pretty little quilt.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty. I love navy and yellow together.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great use of a leftover block. It's so striking. It will be well loved by some child.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on using up an orphan block and making such a striking mini quilt. Love all those blues, some child will love it to pieces.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful way to use up that sweet test block. Love the backing fabric you found for this and the wider binding looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLove this mini quilt. This is a such a versatile block - looks different in different settings and different color combos. I just finished and gifted my quilt from your mystery quilt along. One of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved this mystery quilt. What a great way to take an element from it to make a mini. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow and navy combo! And the chunky binding! Does it get stitched on the same way?
