Welcome to my stop on the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 13 Blog Tour!
Cloud Burst is a paper pieced block design with some unusual angles and shapes that I designed in EQ7 utilizing the Kaleidoscope Block function within the Serendipity block design tab. I started with one of my more simple block designs, ran it through the Kaleidoscope Block function, and then continued to play with the design until I came up with Cloud Burst. If you have EQ7, you should give the functions within the Serendipity tab a try, you can get some very unique block designs!
Here is the block repeated in a lap size quilt:
Cloud Burst is a relatively complex block so I played around with quilt top designs (using sashing, borders, and negative space) to maximize the impact of the block while minimizing the piecing time.
I think that the sashing really gives the quilt a whole different look.
The next two rendering use some full and some partial blocks to finish off the plus part of the block design.
Make sure you stop by Quiltmaker's blog, Quilty Pleasures, for some great prizes and a complete list of blog tour participants!
Now on to the Giveaways (yes plural!):
Prize 1: Quiltmaker is sponsoring the giveaway of a copy of 100 Blocks Magazine Vol. 13. This magazine drawing is open to everyone-international included. The magazine will be shipped directly from Quiltmaker's.

I make a lot of different sized quilts. Baby quilts are the easiest to finish but oversized lap quilts are the most useful.

Nice block, I like your choice of color for the negative space.
ReplyDeleteI love a lap size quilt because its easy to quilt in my home machine. I will do battle this summer with an 80 x 67 monster! I would send it to a longarmer, but my piecing is a bit embarassing.

ReplyDeleteThank you for a chance to win. I like to make lap size quilts. They are big enough to keep you warm, but not to big to handle. I am currently working on a queen size quilt that has been three years in the making and I am so ready to be done with it. (Top done, just need to get the quilting done).
ReplyDeleteI receive your emails letting me know when the blog is update.

ReplyDeleteYour block is lovely! I like to make lap quilts...I think the larger ones are better with a size of maybe 60 x 70 ish :-) Thank you for the sweet giveaway. I love your On the Jelly Roll pattern...was looking at it just the other day.

I loved the block when I saw it alone, but it is so lovely how it looks once it's in a quilt- I love when blocks make a secondary design when joined!!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win! I'm a beginner quilter, and started a quilt a long time ago, which I hope will get finished shortly after I retire (soon, soon!), as I don't have much time right now. It was originally envisioned as a twin size quilt for my niece's (then) bed, but now she has a queen bed (I think), so I'm working on growing it.
ReplyDeleteJan - vtcjan@yahoo.com
Intriguing design. Love the more modern settings. I used to make mostly bed-sized (crib, queen or larger)quilts, but lately I make a lot more throw sized, as I can easily quilt them on my Bernina.
ReplyDeleteI have been following your blog now for awhile via email.
ReplyDeleteI really like your design, especially the single setting near the bottom of this post. Thanks for sharing and for the give-away.

ReplyDeleteI like your block and think it would suit me being it is a paper piecing, which, in my humble opinion, really makes difficult blocks come together.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog via Bloglovin' and I've completed a Meadow Mist Design's Mystery quilt. Paper piecing is still a method I haven't tried so I look forward to sewing this block. Thanks for a chance in the giveaway.

What a great block - I especially love the way you can create stars in the corners. I love to make BIG lap quilts - something that can be tossed on top of a bed as well. Thanks for the fab block and the great giveaway!

ReplyDeleteYour block is so pretty in the quilt layouts! My favorite size quilt would be either a lap or a neonatal 36" sq. quilt.

ReplyDeleteI really love your block and the quilts you designed from them. My favorite size to piece is baby quilts because they go together fast!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool block! I usually make lap or queen-sized. Lap size because they are quick and useful for TV watching, gifts, even to display on walls; queen-size because I like bed-sized quilts best but actually quilting queens is a bit of a problem!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite size quilt to make is a twin quilt. I actually make quilts for all kids that go to college and twin is the perfect size for dorm beds. I am following you on Instagram. My user name there is quiltedbyme. Thanks for hosting this giveaway! :)
ReplyDeleteI love the drama of this block. I think I prefer sashing to none, but I really like the idea of alternate blocks filling out the corner patterns with a more open space in the center. Kind of like a giant Irish chain. I prefer to make bed sized quilts, but I probably make as many display quilts as quilts for beds.
