Who likes making hourglass units?
Welcome to the October sewing instructions for the Marble Mystery Quilt, the tenth annual Meadow Mist Designs mystery quilt along! This month we will be making some hourglass and triple units.The Marble Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that will run from July 2024 through March 2025 to make a throw sized quilt (about 65 ½" x 65 ½") with a set of instructions posted the first Thursday of every month. The quilt pattern is at an advanced beginner level containing basic piecing techniques (no applique, Y-seams, or paper piecing).

Cutting Instructions
Hourglass Units
B/bg HST UNITS
1. Place a fabric B square 5 ½" x 5 ½" and a bg square 5 ½" x 5 ½" right sides together (or 5 ¾" x 5 ¾" squares if they were oversized).
Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the bg square (shown as the solid line).
2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines). Cut on the marked line and press seams toward fabric B. Do not trim the half-square triangle (HST) units at this point.
3. Repeat to make a total of 8 B/bg HST units approx. 5" x 5" (approx. 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" if using oversized squares).
C/bg HST UNITS
1. Place a fabric C square 5 ½" x 5 ½" and a bg square 5 ½" x 5 ½" right sides together (or 5 ¾" x 5 ¾" squares if they were oversized).
Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the bg square (shown as the solid line).
2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the marked line (shown as the dotted lines). Cut on the solid line and press seams toward fabric C. Do not trim the half-square triangle (HST) units at this point.
3. Repeat to make a total of 8 C/bg HST units approx. 5" x 5" (approx. 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" if using oversized squares).
HOURGLASS UNITS
1. Place a B/bg HST unit and a C/bg HST unit right sides together as shown so that the seams nest.
Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of one of the HST units (shown as the solid line) perpendicular to the seam.
2. Sew ¼" on both sides of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines). Cut on the marked line and press seams open.
3. Trim the hourglass units to 4 ½" x 4 ½". Repeat to make a total of 16 hourglass units.
D/bg/D Triplet Units
1. Arrange and sew together the following fabric pieces, pressing the seams open or towards the fabric D squares, to make a D/bg/D triplet unit 4 ½" x 16 ½".

This has been my most asked question, how to join in on the Marble Mystery quilt? There is no official sign up, list, or cost to join in the mystery quilt along. Each set of instructions will be posted to this blog as a post on the first Thursday of each month.
