I am so excited to have a block called Sizzle Star in Volume 15 of the 100 Blocks magazine by Quiltmaker (and my block even made the cover)! This is my sixth block to appear in the 100 Blocks magazines. You can see my previous 100 Blocks:
Sizzle Star is a great advanced level paper-pieced block. The 12" (finished) block does have a lot of pieces and template sections (so it is not the quickest block to sew up), but I think that the resultant block has a striking look to it. I designed the block using Electric Quilt 7 (EQ7) by using some of the Serendipity functions and then further refining the design.
Just like my Ruby Roads quilt I shared 2 weeks ago, the Sizzle Star block has a different look and feel when placed on-point:
Horizontal On-Point
To show the versatility of this block, I played around in EQ7 to see how many different quilt top designs I could make with the block. Here are some of my favorites...
The Sizzle block in a horizontal layout (with sashing) in a variety of colors.
The Sizzle block in an on-point layout (with sashing) in a variety of colors.
A single column of blocks (great way to enlarge a quilt without having to piece so many blocks)
On-point with a dark background and some half blocks around the edges.
An on-point patriotic version, great for a 4th of July picnic or a Quilts of Valor quilt.
One question I was asked to answer in this blog post was where is the oddest place I have hidden fabric. The only time I have had to hide fabric was after I bought an Elsa (from the movie Frozen) quilt panel at a quilt guild meeting and was showing it to my husband when I heard my daughter come towards the living room. I quilt hid the panel in one of my end tables so I would not ruin her surprise before I could sew it up into a full quilt for her (here is Elsa peeking out!)
Make sure you stop by Quiltmaker's blog, Quilty Pleasures, for some great prizes and a complete list of blog tour participants!
Now on to the Giveaways (yes plural!):
Prize 1: Quiltmaker is sponsoring the giveaway of a copy of 100 Blocks Magazine Vol. 15. This magazine drawing is open to everyone-international included. The magazine will be shipped directly from Quiltmaker.
Prize 2: I am also sponsoring a second prize, a copy 100 Blocks Magazine Vol. 15 plus a printed copy of On a "Jelly" Roll (my most popular pattern). This giveaway is open to everyone-international included and will be shipped from me.

Love your Sizzle block! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI love this block, particularly with a dark background. I think I have to make this.

ReplyDeleteI really like the block! I think paper piecing is wonderful, great results. I do have to focus while doing it, though. Easy to make mistakes!
ReplyDeleteI have a love hate relationship with paper piecing. Recently I finished a Twisted Log Cabin. Love the quilt, but oh so much work.
ReplyDeleteI follow you on BL.
ReplyDeleteI love your block and will definitely be making it and will use one of your suggested settings. Paper piecing is not my favorite process, but I do it because I like the outcome.

ReplyDeleteYou have done it again, Cheryl. I love the versatile block. When you showed the great way to increase a quilt, I thought it would also make a interest back to make a column of the blocks down one side. At first, I thought it was the back of a quilt. I don't usually put that much effort into the back of a quilt, but there's always a first. It's difficult to see when the block is horizontal and on-point. Different parts of the block are horizontal and on-point depending on which part your eye happens to capture. Great! Thanks for showing just some of the potential for this block. I always great to see the new 100 Blocks.
ReplyDeleteI actually follow you two ways - Bloglovin' and Facebook.
ReplyDeleteThe block is beautiful and the quilt variations are absolutely stunning. I'm not generally a paper piecer, but those variations have me thinking!
ReplyDeleteI follow you on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteI still have never tried paper piecing-it is on my list of thing to try, but new things always get pushed to the back burner since I usually want to actually get something done when I find a few minutes to sew!!!
ReplyDeleteI love following your blog on bloglovin!
ReplyDeleteLovely block! I really like versions 2, 3 and 4 of quilts you designed with it.

ReplyDeleteI actually got into quilting through paper piecing! My first quilts were all paper pieced, and I still love it very much! Beautiful block!

ReplyDeletePP is not my favorite thing, but this is one I might try. I really like the versatility you illustrated.

I enjoy foundation paper piecing, but find that I have to give it time to sink in everytime I do it. Once I have done a few pieces, I am back in the groove and enjoy myself.
ReplyDeleteOhioholman@aol.com
I don't like paper piecing, but I love your multi-colored stars on point it's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI challenged myself to do a paper pieced quilt, just so I wouldn't be afraid of tackling a block if it said those "dreaded words", I can do it, but it's not my favorite.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win this gorgeous pattern or the book!
ReplyDeletePaper piecing was scary until I took a class--now I love it!

ReplyDeleteI love paper piecing, but generally need a break from it after I'm done and have to sew some nice simple HST.

ReplyDeleteYour block is fantastic and I love the other versions you show. I have done some paper piecing and the only thing I don't care for is the odd chunks of scraps that I have to cut off. I think if the shapes are prelanned and cut then what you cut off would not be so odd and bias-y. If that makes sense?
ReplyDeleteI love the new block. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI love this block on point! The black background and the blue background designs are especially stunning. I've tried paper piecing, but I am not an expert.

ReplyDeleteLove your block design! I like paper piecing but there's a lot of wasted fabric, imo. On the other hand, beautiful points...

ReplyDeleteI love your block and all the possibilities with it. I don't love paper piecing, but when I want to do something with a graphic effect, I tend to paper piece.
ReplyDeleteLove your design. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteYour sizzle block would make a wonderful Quilt of Valor when done in patriotic fabrics. I like the precision that I get with paper piecing, but I don't like the time it takes. I have learned to lessen the fabric waste by strip paper piecing and that method also cuts the time a bit. The large size of your sizzle block would help a project go faster too.

ReplyDeleteI am going to try my hand at paper piecing. Looks to be a fun challenge.

ReplyDeleteYou've done it again with another fantastic block. I have tried paper piecing but I know that I need a lot more practicing before I can say that I have master this skill. Thank you for being a part of this Blog Hop and giving me this opportunity to try and win a copy of this wonderful magazine to keep forever.

I have never tried paper piecing, but plan to do so in the future. I like your layouts using dark fabrics for the background.
ReplyDeleteyfg3749@yahoo.com
I have done some animal blocks with paper piecing. I even did some by hand in a hotel room once (not recommended!).
ReplyDeleteI tried my first paper piecing block a few weeks ago. It was fun! I really like your quilt with the dark background, it's beautiful!.
ReplyDeleteI follow you on blogspot and email.
ReplyDeleteOne of my first quilts was a paper pieced queen sized quilt. I love how it turned out, all those points are perfect. It was tedious, but I'd do it again.
ReplyDeleteI love sizzle star and as my favorite quilt blocks are stars. This one is spectacular, even better it is paper pieced which is also something I love doing. Thanks for designing this block. Now to find a copy of this Vol 15.

ReplyDeleteI don't like paper piecing, primarily because I don't do it often enough, so when I do find myself having to use that technique, it takes me w-a-y too long to figure it out again, lol!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the give away. I love to paperpiece. My points are Always correct. :)Greetings, Dini

Beautiful block. I really like the first quilt. I did my first paper piecing when The Splendid Sampler blocks started. I totally hated it. It took me all day to make the fist block that was shared. That was the first and last time I tried it. I prefer to applique wherever possible. Thank you for the giveaway.

ReplyDeleteWOW! I love star patterns and yours is a winner. Thanks for the block and the chance to win.
I love the precision of paper piecing. I was scared and confused by it first, but once I learned how to do it, I really started enjoying it.

I have been following you by email since before the meadow mystery quilt. I finally started sewing the blocks together a few days ago and hope to have the top completed soon. Two hand surgeries have slowed me down in getting it done. I really enjoyed the mystery quilt and hope to do this year's as well. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteYes!!... Another great block, Cheryl!!
ReplyDeleteAnd, it's amazing, the difference it makes, when the block is turned on-point! (I really like it on-point, too... like your Ruby Roads quilt is stunning on-point!)
I have had one major project in paper piecing... I did not realize at the time that it was rather complicated for a first-timer... and afterwards felt that it had been a "been there, done that" experience, never to be repeated!!! (It was for my daughter-in-law, and I told her upon presentation, to appreciate its uniqueness... That there would never be another like it from me!! Actually, it delights me that she does love and use it!!)
Not unlike childbirth, time dulls the memory of the labor... and I think I should try paper piecing again! This block just may be the enticement!!
*Congratulations!* on an exciting block, Cheryl!!

Oh, I do SO enjoy following your creativity by email (and, Instagram, too!)

ReplyDeleteSizzle Star is brilliant! I have done a little paper piecing. I love it when I'm doing it but it isn't my go-to technique. I do have plans though :-)
ReplyDeleteI have never tried paper piecing....
ReplyDeletePaper piecing is one of my favorite methods of making blocks -- perfect points,, yes! it is like a jig saw puzzle to me. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI use Bloglovin to follow you,, thanks
ReplyDeletePaper piecing is great when I want to make one or two special blocks. Love the detail you can get. but I have not finished a quilt where all the blocks are paper pieced. That one is still sitting with most blocks done, but the border I've yet to start and now I think I might have lost the pattern.
ReplyDeleteI follow by email
ReplyDeleteI've used Paper Piecing to complete a couple of Quilts, and love the results. However, it's more time consuming for me to do than piecing, so I don't do it as often.

ReplyDeleteI like to work small projects when doing paper piecing, I find that working larger projects makes for a lot of work getting that paper off. I might add, my daughter lives 2500 miles away and we are going to each do your next mystery quilt - she is a beginner quilter and by doing a project together I can give her some long distance help and encouragement! Cannot wait for July!

ReplyDeleteLove the block and the many variations for layouts. Another excellent job!
ReplyDeleteI used to hate paper piecing, now I just find it annoying (I made a quilt with only 6 paper pieced blocks, the rest were pieced and that was ok) I love your variations of layout esp ones that show fewer blocks

ReplyDeleteI really like your block. I am a beginner, but I do like paper piecing because I can sew on a straight line. I still have problems getting a 1/4" seam, so PP helps me gives me success.
ReplyDeleteHiya!!! I've only tried paper piecing once, so still not sure exactly how I feel about it. I love that it is so precise, but I did mess up a couple of times and had to rip (carefully). I need to do it some more to get my head wrapped around it completely. Thanks for doing the giveaway. Blessed be, hugs!!!

ReplyDeleteSuch a striking block! I like how the black really enhances the design. I do some paper piecing. I like the results, but it is slower.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on having another block in the 100 block series
I love your Sizzle Block! I don`t often do paper piecing - don`t enjoy taking out the paper and I find that more fabric is wasted. Still, it`s sometimes necessary to get just the effect you want.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your published Sizzle Block!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE paper piecing! While it uses more fabric, it gives such accurate results! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteAnd I follow with an email subscription- never miss a post!
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great block. Sometimes I get tired of seeing "new" patterns that are simply rehashes of a traditional block in a traditional setting, made in the pattern maker's new fabric line. This beats that! I've not done much paper piecing, but I am not afraid of it.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog by e-mail. Probably also by BlogLoving, but e-mail makes sure I don't miss any. I would love to win a copy of your pattern. It looks like fun.
