Improv Quilt Two Finish

Earlier this week, I used some quilt scraps from my son's quilt to make a mini improv quilt I am calling Improv Quilt Two (in progress - blogged here).  I quilted the mini using matchstick quilting in a light grey Aurifil thread.  The quilt finished at about 13" x 18".



For the first time, I used facing instead of binding.  I used this tutorial from Susan Brubaker Knapp @ Blue Moon River.  Facing was actually was easier then I thought it was going to be.  The only issue I ran into was that with all of the clips and pins holding the facing in place on the back, my hand sewing thread kept getting tangled and caught on the pins.  Here are some more finished pictures...

    I LOVE this, Cheryl! The matchstick quilting is a fabulous accent to it. Isn't that tutorial of Susan's great? I used it a lot! So glad you linked up to TGIFF!

    What a sweet stress reliever this turned out to be! Love the intense quilting and the faced binding. Both make this a work of art!
    That 70's thing... I'd take that as a compliment cause this mini looks fab!

    Wow, very nice...hard to describe, but, somehow, the gray quilting toned down the blues and made them all blend together so well. The facing is the perfect finish. Great job!

    ohhh pretty! - once I started facing quilts - I never have gone back to binding unless I'm doing traditional. I find that I like giving the facing a good press and that works fine without all the little clips - but my hands do get tired from holding it in place myself!

    ohhh and little known fact about me - I was an environmental engineer for 10 years before I taught school for 10 years - now I'm placing catalog orders for a big clothing company (under achieving has a lot more perks then I thought - my last career is making me the happiest - LOL)

    Thank you for sharing the facing tutorial link, I will have to give that a try one day. I am such a planner that I am unable do improv quilt, and I admire you for it. The quilting really adds another depth to it. It's beautiful Cheryl!

    I'm not normally a big fan of improve quilts in this style, but the colours and the heavy quilting really appeal to me.
