Today is my day as part of the blog hop hosted by byAnnie called #sewPINK to celebrate October as breast cancer awareness month!
Here is Reedy River Falls, a celebration of pink fabrics and half square triangles!
FABRICS & MATERIALS
The cover quilt is made with:
- Pink fabrics in light tones and darker tones. I picked all of these out of my scrap bin and stash and went with pinks that were more purple in tone.
- Moda Bella Solids in Black (and a few bits of an old Sweetwater black dictionary print)
- Moda Bella Solids in White
I do not make scrappy quilts very often, but I find one of easiest ways to use scraps for me is to use scraps with similar colors as one grouping of fabrics.
I used my favorite Warm & White batting by the Warm Company and Aurifil thread for the piecing. For the backing, I went with a solid burgundy fabric from FreeSpirit I had on hand.
QUILTING PLAN
My initial plan for quilting was to echo the diagonal seam lines of the half square triangles to reinforce the diamond shapes. Once I finished the straight line quilting, I felt that the quilting was a little too spaced apart, but the thought of adding more straight lines was not appealing (the quilt had to be turned so much during quilting).
So I figured that I would add some free motion quilting between the straight lines. This added such texture to the quilt and went quicker than I thought it would. You can really see the quilting on the solid backing, it makes it look like a whole cloth quilt :)
ABOUT THE PATTERN NAME
So how did this quilt get its name? I started out trying to think of a name with the word "diamonds" in it, but found that every name I came up already was a quilt pattern.
Reedy River Falls is a waterfall and the jewel of downtown Greenville, South Carolina where I live. Because the quilt contains diamond (or jewel) shapes I named it after the falls.
PATTERN DETAILS
Reedy River Falls is written at a confident beginner level and is scrap friendly (but can also be made with yardage). The half square triangles combine to form a diamond-like design in the quilt top.The pattern contains instructions to make three sizes: lap and twin. The design is the same between the lap and twin sizes, with the twin size using larger sized blocks than the lap.

I really like this pattern. I love the dimension and how the design gives a 3D effect. The colors are beautiful. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteI do follow you on Facebook and Bloglovin. One of the things I love the most is that you give tutorials, which I LOVE!. As a self taught quilter, I am definitely not an expert and many things like 1/2 square triangles intimidate me. The tutorial you provided is easily understood and I think I can follow them. Thank you so much for providing these tidbits. :D
ReplyDeleteYour patterns are wonderful. The designs are crisp and clean, and the directions are great. When I visited a friend in Greenville a couple years back, she took me to Reedy River Falls. What a great name for this pattern! Both are beautiful. (plus it looks like it could be related to the Ocean Waves pattern.)
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt! Thanks for sharing the pattern. I can see it done in so many different color combos.

Thank you for sharing your pattern with us, and bringing attention to breast cancer awareness. I am a breast cancer survivor twice. First when I was 32 an again when 70. Resulying in a total mastectomy and lastly a lumpectomy. Both found with self exams, called the doctor the next day, then mammeograms. Important to do your part to save your life.
ReplyDeleteLovely pattern! I made my own version of last year's Sew Pink quilt, Bear Hugs, and am excited to make this one. October is a very celebratory month in our house; last week was our 10th wedding anniversary, my son turned 8 on Monday (with a covid-safe outdoor birthday party today!) and my husband's birthday next week, so lots of good things for us.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the free pattern. Looking forward to doing it.

ReplyDeleteMy good news is about an injury my husband sustained back in July. 14 stitches later, we began praying for complete healing of his dominant pointer finger. ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely quilt. Something good that happened to me this month is that I had my mammogram. I've also had a biopsy and been diagnosed with breast cancer. You might wonder why this is good -- we've caught it early and I have an appointment with the surgeon tomorrow. All this activity in less than 2 weeks and my doctor says I'll be fine. Just a bump (kind of big bump) in the road.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! I'm so behind this month because I make all my appointments in October, especially the mammogram!!!
ReplyDeleteAs a new resident of Greenville, I can't wait to make this once I get me studio set up.
