Macaron Mystery ++ Flying Geese Units

Let's make some flying geese :)

Welcome to the third month of instructions for the Macaron Mystery Quilt!  This month we will be making some flying geese units using the no-waste method.

There is plenty of time to join in on the quilt along, we are just getting started! Last month we cut our fabric for the quilt top.  You can find all of the information about the Macaron Mystery, including schedule, past instructions, links to the Facebook group, sneak peek, and more at the Macaron Mystery Page.

The Macaron Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that will run from July 2021 through April 2022 with a set of directions revealed the first Thursday of every month. The Macaron Mystery is a lap size design, that can easily be made larger with the addition of borders.

Now that the Macaron Mystery quilt along has ended,
you can find a easy to print, full version of the Macaron Mystery
pattern for sale in my pattern shop.

    Flying Geese Units

    Combine 15 fabric B squares 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" and 60 Bg2 squares 2 ⅞" x 2 ⅞" to make 60 B/Bg2 flying geese units 2 ½" x 4 ½" using the No Waste Flying Geese method.

    1.  Place 2 of the Bg2 squares 2 ⅞" x 2 ⅞" on opposite corners of a Fabric B square 5 ¼" x 5 ¼" right sides together.  The Bg2 squares will overlap in the middle of the Fabric B square.  Use a removable marking device to make a line diagonally across the Bg2 squares (solid line).

    2.  Sew a scant ¼" seam on both sides of the marked line (dotted lines) and then cut on the marked line (solid line).

    3.  Press the seams towards the Bg2 squares. You will have two of these intermediate units.  For each intermediate unit, place a Bg2 square 2 ⅞" x 2 ⅞" on the corner of the fabric B square right sides together.  Draw a diagonal line on the Bg2 square (solid line) and sew a scant ¼" on both sides of the marked line (dotted lines).

    4.  Cut on the marked line (solid line) and press the seams towards the Bg2 squares.  Each set of 1 fabric B square and 4 Bg2 squares will yield 4 B/Bg2 flying geese.

    5. Repeat steps 1-4 to make a total of 60 B/Bg2 flying geese units.  Cut off tabs (also known as dog ears) and trim blocks to 2 ½" x 4 ½" if necessary, making sure there is ¼" between the point of the goose triangle and the edge of the unit.

Many thanks to the generous sponsors of the Macaron Mystery Quilt!

    1. Could you not make the pictures with a white background? I kept trying to figure out where bg1 was but then on the pdf there were no white squares. Just a friendly suggestion from a new quilter. Loving it so far!

    2. Thanks for the new set of instructions and I'm glad that is your method for many FG units that are the same. I do it that way too. Ooh, still wondering what we'll end up with? Take care & hugs.

    3. Me again.........forgot to say that your book finally arrived from my favourite bookshop via post as we still can't go into Melbourne because of lockdowns. I love it and will use it soon to use up some of my charm squares. Thank you.

    4. It's always fun to contemplate how each new part will fit into the final layout.
