Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day - December 9th, 2015

Welcome to the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day!


This is my fifth time participating in the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day.  I love Sew Mama Sew (I just curated the Handmade Holidays list of Gifts for Cooks) and I enjoy spending a few many, many hours entering giveaways and finding new wonderful blogs each SMS Giveaway Day.   

So who would like some delicious Kona solids?  Up for grabs is a 12-Piece Blueberry Thicket Fat Quarter Bundle of Kona cotton solids by Robert Kaufman.  I am such a fan of Kona cottons, they have such a great feel and so many colors.

For those who are new here, here is a little about myself (for those that are returning, thank you!).

My name is Cheryl and I am a chemical engineer/patent agent by day and a quilter at night.  I have a wonderfully supportive husband who allowed me to turn the guest bedroom into my quilting room, an 8 year old son and 5 year old daughter.  I love designing quilt patterns and doing quilty math which allows me to combine my quilting skills with my engineering and technical writing backgrounds.  

 I would love to tell you about three fun things going on or starting soon on my blog:

 1.  The Midnight Mystery Quilt:  This is a lap sized mystery quilt-a-long which started in June and will continue until March 2016.  All of the months' instructions, as well as details about the popular Facebook group can be found in the Mystery Quilt tab above.  The instructions will never be removed so you can start the quilt whenever you would like!

2.  The Best of 2015 Linky Party:  My first linky party!  Simply write a blog post with your favorite 5 posts from 2015, link up, and check out everyone else's bests.  The party will start the day after Christmas (Sat. Dec 26th) and continue through Saturday, Jan 2nd.  You can find more information about the link party here.


3.  Pattern Writing Blog Series: Starting in mid-January I will be presenting a blog series on how to write quilt patterns, teaching how to take a quilt design from a sketch book to a fully developed quilt pattern.  To make the series less abstract and more practical, I will be demonstrating each step and concept using an actual quilt pattern example.  A wonderful group of pattern designers will be joining me for round table discussions through the series. You can find out more information at the Pattern Writing Series tab above.

 I hope that you will be able to take some time to look through any of the blog happens described above, my recent finishes, and my newly updated tutorials page.

This giveaway is open to everyone, everywhere in the world and is for one (1) Blueberry Thicket Fat Quarter Bundle which includes 12 fat quarters of Kona cotton solids. 

 This giveaway starts today (Wednesday Dec 9th) and will run until Sunday Dec 12th at 8 p.m. EST.  (To lower shipping costs, the fabric bundle might be disassembled for shipment.)

    I like fat quarters because you are able to do so much with them. The smaller cuts feel a little restrictive. The blues, above, look so lovely. Thanks for the chance to win.

    My favorite precut is the layer cake. A nice compromise between what I'd buy if funds and space were unlimited (fat quarters} and what I have space for-- charm packs

    I think that fat quarters are my favorite cut. You can get a tremendous variety in your stash without spending as much as you would for yardage.

    I just started following you because of the pattern making class. I am a reluctant designer.... I make quilt and people asked me for patterns so I made them but without really knowing if I am doing it right and looking at free pattern. You are exactly what I needed. So thank you

    I like charm packs because you can get an entire line for very little money, but since I think with fabric more is better, I'd go with the fat quarter packs!

    What gorgeous, gorgeous blues! I used to favor charm packs...and still like them....but I've started buying layer cakes...it's like getting 4 charm packs at once if I want to cut them into quarters...or use them as the 10inch squares. They are just so versatile.

    I've become fond of jolly bars. Most often, I use them as is, but they're easy to chop into charms or mini charms. I love that!

    I like jelly rolls because there's a little wiggle room in case there's a mistake cutting. I also really like Kona cotton because of its softness.

    My favourite size for a pack is fat quarters. I am (not yet) into quilting so the bigger the size of the fabric, the better I can use it to make lovely garments for my little girl :)

    Layer cakes are my precut of choice, not that I don't spread the love with jelly rolls and charm packs. I also have an estimated four to five hundred FQs. I' just sayin'. I have a thing for fabric!

    If I could afford them, I'd say FQ bundles like this gorgeous one are my favorite precuts. However, fat 1/8s or 1/16 are a better alternative, along with layer cakes. Layer cakes are big enough to be useful and to give you a good sense of the fabrics, but still affordable. I usually end up buying yardage on sale to finish out things.

    I don't work with precuts much - I like to buy 1/2 yards and this usually works for most of my projects - I will buy 5 yards when I can get it on sale and it would work for good backs

    For my favorite pre-cut, it is a toss up between the jellyroll and the charm pack. It is so easy to do HST patterns with the charms, but it is SO convenient to use the jelly rolls and not have to cut all those strips!

    I like charm packs. All my scraps I trim down to 4 or 5 inch squares (basically charms) and use them to make leaders and enders scrap quilts. Love it!
