I am so excited to tell you about something that I have been working on (for many, many hours) behind the scenes: starting in January, I will be presenting a blog series on how to write a quilt pattern.
The series will take you step by step from a quilt design in a sketchbook all the way through to a fully developed quilt pattern. To make the series less abstract and more practical, I will be demonstrating each step by working through an actual quilt pattern (that will be available as a free pattern at the end of the series).
There is no right way or wrong way to write a quilt pattern, so a number of wonderful pattern designers will be joining me for round table discussions and additional posts to give different perspectives and opinions on the design and writing processes. With me will be (in alphabetic order) Amy of 13 Spools, Anne of Springleaf Studios, Christa of Christa Quilts, Lorna of Sew Fresh Quilts, Soma of Whims and Fancies, and Yvonne of Quilting Jetgirl.
I hope that you will grab my button for your blog (button and code on the Pattern Writing Series page) or bookmark the Pattern Writing Series page to keep up to date on all of the posts.
So excited for this series! Button grabbed and anxiously waiting.
ReplyDeleteI am in the process of converting my paper piecing block patterns into full blown quilt patterns, so this series could not have come at a better time! I will most definitely put the button on my blog and follow along closely.
ReplyDeleteThis is great, Cheryl. I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to this series, Cheryl. Thank you for all the hard work behind the scenes to pull it all together!
ReplyDeleteDitto Yvonne's comment. I'm looking forward to learning lots of new things. Just put up a post announcing it too. It's going to be great.
ReplyDeleteSounds great.
ReplyDeleteI will be most happily on board! I have one freebie (the new block!) on Craftsy, and two more patterns almost ready to upload, so I will be happy to have any and all advice and information! Great idea Cheryl! Thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm looking forward to the series.
ReplyDeleteooo I'm so glad you're doing this! I have a lot to learn. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteThis will all be totally new to me and I am so looking forward to it! Thanks so much for putting this together!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this! Thank you so much for having me :)

This is going to be very informative! There is really not a lot of information out there covering this subject and there should be. Very much looking forward to this series!
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be so great! Maybe it will give me the confidence (not to mention some skills) to start getting my own patterns started! Thank you so much Cheryl, this is timely!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful series.

I struggle to write patterns for classes I teach each month. This is so welcome! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I am looking forward to learn more about the process others use! Question: is it going to be geared specifically to specific software tools? Because I don't have EQ7 (or any other non-free software) so I am just curious to know what is going to be your approach. I am sure there is going to be a lot to be learned either way! I am in the process of designing several patterns in Inkscape and I can learn so much from all of you talented designers out there!! Thanks for hosting this series!!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you are doing this series. There are many great designs and patterns available but some of the directions are terrible. To complicated and confusing. As a retired sewing teacher, I know the trouble beginingers have with directions. Hopefully this series will help all pattern designers.
ReplyDeleteCheryl, looking forward to this series in the new year! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! I'm looking forward to reading this series!
ReplyDeleteIf I already get blog posts by email, will I get the ones for this? Very interested!
ReplyDeleteThe series will be on the blog as posts so if you are subscribed to the blog (bloglovin, email, etc) you will get all of the posts. Thanks!
DeleteThat is going to be a MUST SEE FOR SURE! Great designers! - All favorites! I love learning how other people work out their designs and write patterns. You are soooo wonderful to pull this idea together Cheryl!
ReplyDeleteI'm so looking forward to this series! The owner of my LQS has been encouraging me to publish patterns and I just haven't known where to begin. Thanks so much for covering this topic, and for so generously sharing your expertise!
ReplyDeleteI follow on Bloglovin .

Sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea - will be reading with interest!
ReplyDeleteCheryl, I'm looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteCould have used this in the fall when I wrote my first, although I had about 5 of your patterns in front of me for inspiration! Grabbing the link now.
ReplyDeleteI will tell you what does drive me NUTS when I try to follow a pattern.... I want to know what the finished / unfinished size of a unit is when you finish sewing it. I have passed by many patterns that do not supply the information. If it is not there I have to figure it out for myself and that just gives me a headache.
