Easy to Print PDF Instructions
Half-Square Triangle (HST) Units Combine 16 fabric B squares 3" x 3" and 16 bg squares 3" x 3" to make 32 B/bg HST units 2 ½" x 2 ½".
1. Place a fabric B square 3" x 3" and a bg fabric square 3" x 3" right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the lighter square (shown as the solid line).
2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines).
Cut on the solid line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric.
3. Trim each B/bg HST unit to 2 ½" x 2 ½".
4. Repeat to make a total of 32 B/bg HST units 2 ½" x 2 ½".
Combine 20 fabric C squares 3" x 3" and 20 bg squares 3" x 3" to make 40 C/bg HST units 2 ½" x 2 ½".
1. Place a fabric C square 3" x 3" and a bg fabric square 3" x 3" right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the lighter square (shown as the solid line).
2. Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines).
Cut on the solid line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric.
3. Trim each C/bg HST unit to 2 ½" x 2 ½".
4. Repeat to make a total of 40 C/bg HST units 2 ½" x 2 ½".
First Blocks
Combine the following pieces to make first blocks 6 ½" x 6 ½".
1. Arrange the following units according to the illustration.
2 A/bg HST units 2 ½" x 2 ½"
2 bg squares 2 ½" x 2 ½"
2. Sew together the pieces into rows, then sew the rows together, pressing the seams open or following the arrows, to make a first unit 4 ½" x 4 ½".
3. Repeat to make a total of 4 first units.
4. Arrange the following units and pieces according to the illustration.
1 first unit 4 ½" x 4 ½"
2 B/bg flying geese units 2 ½" x 4 ½"
1 bg square 2 ½" x 2 ½"
2. Sew together the pieces into rows, then sew the rows together, pressing the seams open or following the arrows, to make a first block 6 ½" x 6 ½".
3. Repeat to make a total of 4 first blocks.
Second Blocks
Combine the following units and pieces to make second blocks 4 ½" x 6 ½". 1. Arrange the following units and pieces according to the illustration.
1 C/bg HST unit 2 ½" x 2 ½"
1 fabric C rectangle 2" x 4 ½"
1 bg square 2 ½" x 2 ½"
2 bg rectangles 1 ¾" x 4 ½"
2. Sew together the units and pieces, pressing the seams open or following the arrows, to make a second block 4 ½" x 6 ½".
3. Repeat to make a total of 4 second blocks.
Third Blocks
Combine the following units and pieces to make third blocks 4 ½" x 6 ½".
1. Arrange the following units and pieces according to the illustration.
1 C/bg HST unit 2 ½" x 2 ½"
1 fabric C rectangle 2" x 4 ½"
1 bg square 2 ½" x 2 ½"
2 bg rectangles 1 ¾" x 4 ½"
2. Sew together the units and pieces, pressing the seams open or following the arrows, to make a third block 4 ½" x 6 ½".
3. Repeat to make a total of 4 third blocks.
Note that the second blocks and third blocks are mirror images of each other.
Fourth Blocks
Combine the following units and pieces to make fourth blocks 4 ½" x 6 ½".
1. Arrange the following units and pieces according to the illustration.
1 A/bg flying geese unit 2 ½" x 4 ½"
1 fabric B rectangle 1 3/4" x 4 ½"
1 bg rectangle 3 ¼" x 4 ½"
2. Sew together the units and pieces, pressing the seams open or following the arrows, to make a fourth block 4 ½" x 6 ½".
3. Repeat to make a total of 4 fourth blocks.
