Let's Make some Star Blocks!

Welcome to the October set of instructions for the Melodic Mystery Quilt! The Melodic Mystery Quilt is a free quilt-along that runs from July 2022 through April 2023 with a set of directions revealed the first Thursday of every month.

There is plenty of time to join in on the quilt along, instructions are published monthly so there is plenty of time to catch up! You can find all of the information about the Melodic Mystery, including schedule, past instructions, links to the Facebook group, sneak peek, and more in the Main Melodic Mystery Quilt Page.

Half Square Triangle (HST) Units

Combine 12 fabric A squares 4" x 4" and 12 bg squares 4" x 4" to make 24 A/bg HST units 3 ½" x 3 ½".

1.  Place a fabric A square 4" x 4" and a bg fabric square 4" x 4" right sides together.  Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the lighter square (shown as the solid line).

2.  Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines).  Cut on the solid line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric.

3. Trim each A/bg HST unit to 3 ½" x 3 ½".

4.  Repeat to make a total of 24 A/bg HST units.

Combine 18 fabric C squares 4" x 4" and 18 bg squares 4" x 4" to make 36 C/bg HST units 3 ½" x 3 ½".

1.  Place a fabric C square 4" x 4" and a bg fabric square 4" x 4" right sides together.  Draw a diagonal line using a removable marking device on the back of the lighter square (shown as the solid line).

2.  Sew a ¼" seam on either side of the solid line (shown as the dotted lines).  Cut on the solid line and press seams open or toward the darker fabric.

3.  Trim each C/bg HST unit to 3 ½" x 3 ½".

4.  Repeat to make a total of 36 C/bg HST units.

Star Blocks

Combine the following pieces to make 4 star blocks 12 ½" x 12 ½".

1.  Arrange the following blocks and pieces according to the diagram.
4 A/bg flying geese units 3 ½" x 6 ½"
1 bg square 6 ½" x 6 ½"
4 bg squares 3 ½" x 3 ½"

2.  Sew together the units and pieces into rows, pressing the seams open or away from the flying geese units.

3.  Sew the rows together, pressing the seams open, to make a star block 12 ½" x 12 ½".

  2. Just to clarify, are the flying geese used in the Star block a combination of A/bg and C/bg HST’s?

    1. Good question - the flying geese used in the star blocks were the ones made last month. The HST made this month are not used in the star blocks but will be used in other blocks at a future date. Thanks!
