Periodicity - MGQ Pattern of the Month for June

I am so happy to show you one of my newest quilts, Periodicity which is the June pattern of the month for the Modern Quilt Guild (free to all MQG members)!

For quilters coming over from the MQG, welcome! I hope you have a chance to take a look around my little blog including some of my recent finishes, my new book Modern Plus Sign Quilts, and the Modern Plus Sampler quilt along starting next month. You can also find me over on Instagram as MeadowMistDesigns.

Periodicity is a modern take on a periodic wave pattern that combines strong geometric shapes with bold colors.  The quilt comes together quickly and easily using strip piecing.

Many thanks to:
  • Robert Kaufman for the Kona Cotton solids in Storm, Acid Lime, and Breakers
  • The Warm Company for the Warm & White batting.
  • Aurifil for the piecing and quilting thread.

For the quilting, I wanted to pick a quilting pattern that gave the quilt texture but did not take away from the design or the colors.  I decided to quilt rows of loops that looked like continuous cursive "e" using matching thread colors for each fabric.   I used 50 wt Aurifil thread in 2785 (dark blue), 2810 (turquoise), and 2115 (bright yellow) for the quilting.  This meant a ton of tying off and burying threads, but I think I hope that the effect was worth it :)

I want to give a special thanks to Paige of Quilted Blooms and Yvonne of Quilting Jetgirl for their super pattern review skills!!

  2. This is a fun and modern quilt design! Great work :) The colors are so fresh and summer-y. It's a "feel good vibes when just looking at it" quilt. Also love the quilting design you picked.

  3. Love your quilty interpretation of a periodic wave pattern. Very fun, very graphic.

  4. This is a beautiful and eye-catching quilt. I love the simplicity of the straight lines and the curved quilting with the bright solids. All the thread burying was worth it. Do you quilt on a domestic machine or a long-arm?

  8. I love the quilt and the matching threads is quilt the task! Sometimes we just have to do the more difficult thing, but, I always find I am happier when I put in the extra effort.

  9. The effect of the quilting was definitely worth the time you spent changing thread and burying ends. I love this design!

  12. I just did that very thing on my latest quilt finish: switching thread colours, much of a PITA as it can be... very pleased in the end. This is a great quilt Cheryl.
