Today I am so excited to show you one of my quilt finishes from last fall! The quilt is called Flutter and it appears in the just published Modern Quilts Unlimited Magazine Issue 22.
Flutter is one of the modern plus sign quilt designs I made for magazines to help spread the word about the Modern Plus Sign Quilts book.
Flutter is a modern pattern that combines curved pieced blocks with plus signs for an abstract butterfly design.
I would like to thank Robert Kaufman for the beautiful fabrics: Kona Cotton solids in flamingo, lipstick, navy, and white. The batting was Warm & White by the Warm Company and Aurifil thread was used in the piecing and quilting.
The curved blocks are a nice, large size so the curve was easier (and quicker) to piece than I had thought they might be. Pretty soon the quilt top was finished and I was trying to figure out what quilting design I should use. An allover design did not seem like the right fit, so I went with a custom quilting design.
I used a matching 50 wt Aurifil thread in each section. I quilted the background in a very small and tight stipple and outlined all of the butterfly pieces. I quilted the dark blue plus signs using a dense back-and-forth design and quilted the curves using a special motif I designed using my new Quick Curve longarm rulers (affiliate link) and my Bernina ruler foot.
Here was a test quilting sandwich I used to test out my initial design for the curved shapes. I decided that they needed a little more quilting so I added a few more lines to it for the final design. I was really pleased with the quilting design, I think that reinforces the butterfly look to the blocks.
I am planning on writing a little tutorial on how to stitch the design and post it next week. You can find the Quick Curve quilting rulers here (affiliate link) and check out my post about 5 tips and tricks for ruler quilting on a domestic machine here.
I had a lot of fun working on this quilt. Flutter is going to be hanging in the Modern Quilts Unlimited booth at QuiltCon next month (and I will be in the booth for a few hours) so if you attend QuiltCon, please stop by!
I love the Modern Quilts Unlimited magazine, the magazine is so full of great quilts and inspiration. Check out Modern Quilts Unlimited Issue 22!

It's beautiful! I love the quilting you did there, those continuous curves in the blocks are mesmerizing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Cheryl!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I didn't know there are QCR ruler for quilting--very cool!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! This made me stop what I was doing just to look at it. Love the quilting design you used, too.

So cute!!! It combines two of my favorite quilt blocks--plus blocks and butterfly blocks!!! Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteAnother marvellous plus quilt Cheryl! Love the quilting and the colours, like who knew plus blocks could be part of butterflies!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely lovely -- it has almost a modern Asia feel to me! I am looking forward to your ruler tutorial too, as I am getting my new machine soon and I am hoping to get some ruler feet for it!
ReplyDeleteWow Cheryl! This is wonderful. I love the combination of the Plus and drunkards path blocks. This is so unique and amazing. The quilting is pretty cool too!! I'm curious about the quilting design...I'll be watching!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fabulous design, and I love how the quilting compliments it so well! I’m also excited to know I can see it in Pasadena!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a gorgeous quilt Cheryl! I love the colours and design and the quilting is superb! I'll definitely be looking out for it. Will you be releasing it as a stand alone pattern at some point?
ReplyDeleteI love this what a great design!
ReplyDeleteI love it. So many quilts with the curve block just go with a take on Drunkard's Path. Yours is unique. I can see making a veteran's quilt with this design. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThis is super Cheryl! I really really like this design and the execution.

ReplyDeleteI do like this quilt very much.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! Love the design!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! And I really love those colors together. I am not sure I will ever get over my fear of curves but I do love looking at them done well by others, and these butterflies are fabulous. Lovely pattern.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great design, Cheryl! My copy of MQU arrived yesterday and I immediately turned to your quilt! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteInteresting design! I especially like the way it is quilted.
ReplyDeleteCheryl, a lovely quilt and the quilting is wonderful. Thanks for showing a close up of the corner quilting. I also enjoyed reading about your quilting tips. I've been quilting with my Bernina for over 20 years (with no special foot) and agree with all of your tips. Maybe I should try it again with the new ruler foot they have now. I just used tape and chalk and did free motion on straight lines and designs. They were not perfect, but I'm sure with a special foot and using a ruler my quilting would look better. At least I hope so!
ReplyDeleteThat's a quilt with a lot of "Wow" factor! I love the abstract butterflies. The quilting does look a lot like butterfly wings. Congrats on a gorgeous finished quilt.
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful quilt and pattern. I love it. So bright and cheerful.
ReplyDeleteThe abstract butterflies are perfect - asn the quilting choice is too. Ruler quilting is a great thing and espectially when you want to be more precise about emphasizing an area. A nice blend of both FMQ an ruler quilting. Great eye candy for the plus quilt series.
ReplyDeleteThose are great colours. It makes for a great finish. I'm working on a small project with curves. It's challenging so I put it away for a little break. Maybe I should have started with a larger curve.
ReplyDeleteI have never really been into modern quilts until here lately, and I LOVE this pattern. I'm seeing it in my favorite colors, yellow and purple....
ReplyDeleteThanks Cathy! I think that it would look great in yellow and purple.
DeleteHow special! You come up with the very best designs!
ReplyDeleteYour curve piecing looks amazing. It's a beautiful design, Cheryl, and I love the name :)

Such an adorable quilt. I like the blending of curves with pluses. Until you mentioned it, I couldn't see the butterflies, but now it's all I see.
