MQG 10 x 10 Challenge

I saw back in September that the Machine Quilting Unlimited magazine was hosting a challenge to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. The rules were to create a 10" x 10" (finished) mini quilt that referenced the number 10 in some way.

I have been working on a bunch of secret sewing projects and was happy to be able to create this mini to break up the larger sewing projects.

Being that the theme of the mini quilt revolved around time, I felt that the hourglass block would be a fitting starting point. I modernized the hourglass by forming the block from random solid stripes and by the orientation and placement within the quilt top.

The number 10 is represented in the mini quilt by the use of the 10 colored stripes that make up the deconstructed hourglass block. I used paper piecing to sew the block to maintain the alignment and spacing of the strips.

I quilted the quilt by echoing two interacting curves.  I just traced the curve of a plate onto the quilt and then echoed the line.  I auditioned a bunch of alternatives for the binding and thought that the striped binding really added a fun detail.

Alas, I was not one of the ten finalists, just a had a great time making the mini!

  4. I think that the deconstructed hourglass block was a fun way to play with the theme. And I really like the quilting detail, too. I was just chatting with my MIL about a sculpture about time and death relating to an hourglass. If I can find information about it online, I think I'll email you a link.

  6. I love the thought you put into making this mini - the hourglass block, the 10 stripes of fabric, the offset size of the blocks. All of that makes this so interesting. And that binding has me drooling! :) I NEED to get some stripe fabric in my stash; I love to see striped bindings. They look so fresh and modern. Great job!

  19. Well, obviously, I was not a judge. :( Because, chickie, this quilt would have definitely the finalist. I love the design and it absolutely has all of the elements of the challenge. Time (hourglass), ten (stripes), circles (continuity), zing (binding). Yeah, those judges got clocked (that's my best pun--go ahead roll the eyes) by your brilliant interpretation. (Chin up though, the rest of us know great design and all agree this is the one.)
