Way back in June, I got a call from Leslie (the new owner of our local Bernina shop, Bernina...We're in Stitches, where our Greenville Modern Quilt Guild meets) about helping with a design for the Row by Row program.
The Row by Row is an international program (throughout the US and Canada) where each participating shops designs a quilt row pattern that is distributed free to customers throughout the summer. You can learn more about the Row by Row program here.
The 2015 theme was Row by Row H20, and each shop worked with the water theme in their row. Leslie had an idea of umbrellas on the beach and asked me to come up with some ideas. For a more realistic looking umbrella with all of those weird angles my mind immediately went to paper piecing. I worked up my ideas into a proposal which Leslie loved. To make the pattern appeal to more quilters, Leslie suggested also having an applique version.
I created two full 8" x 36" row patterns for the Row by Row shop hop, the first using paper piecing and the second using applique. Below are some photos of the samples made by the shop. It was great fun working with Leslie to create a pattern off of her vision.

Oh how fun! I love both umbrellas and they'd be so much fun as a beach row - have you spotted them in a finished quilt yet?
ReplyDeleteVery nice design! Umbrellas and water really go hand in hand!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very nice Modern touch for a Row by Row. It was great that you offered an non applique option.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for the theme, the perspective on those umbrellas is perfect! Cute button trim too.
ReplyDeleteLove your umbrellas. I learned about Row by Row this summer and was able to obtain 3 patterns, two of them are from Clark Fork Idaho and the other is from West Yellowstone, MT. Next year I hope to collect enough for a whole quilt.
ReplyDeleteso cute. I love that it is both paper pieced and applique
ReplyDeleteWhat a great design! I love all the beach themed rows people created.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your row! So cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful design, Cheryl! Can't help smiling seeing those fab beach umbrellas and I love how you've created the block to be paper pieced or to be appliqued.
ReplyDeleteI love the umbrellas, Cheryl! A whole row of them would make such a cheery looking beach! Smart thinking to have the pattern available as both paper piecing and applique. I'd be hard pressed to pick which version I like better.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you worked your patterns both ways Cheryl! I bet a lot of people were pleased to find their favorite method. The beach and umbrellas look terrific!
ReplyDeleteThey are great designs Cheryl :)
ReplyDeleteYours is the clearest explanation of the Row by Row I've heard....I finally "get it"! Your umbrellas on the beach are perfect!
ReplyDeleteBoth versions are great! I'm partial to applique, so I would choose that one.
ReplyDeleteYou must be pretty darn tickled seeing your patterns in use like that. What an honour!
ReplyDeleteGreat designs. I'm more likely to do the paper pieced version, but both look great.
ReplyDeleteWhat ba fun design!!! Congrats.
ReplyDeleteI've only met one other row designer this summer! Only 2 of the quilt shops that I went to had the row designed by staff, others asked local quilt guilds to submit designs, had design challenges in store, or asked a quilty friend to design. I picked up 12 or so patterns this year, and I'm adding them to the spring/summer ones from last year to make a queen-sized quilt for the camping trailer. There are a lot of really great designs. Too bad I couldn't get south to pick up the beach umbrella one, it would have gone perfectly with one I have of women sunning on the beach! I really like the paper piecing plan, I know it's more work to design than the applique, but I'm more likely to do the pieced patterns. Congrats on making a great design, and I know we'll be seeing more of your creative ideas in the future :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great design. We only had two shops in Nova Scotia participate in Row by Row. I got one pattern, but the other shop is 3 hours away.
ReplyDeleteHow cute! I like them both, but the applique looks more realistic to me. I'm doing some of the rows from our MO shops.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on two excellent ideas, Cheryl. As a non paper piecer myself, I think it's wonderful that you have offered patterns for both options. And each turned out super cute!
ReplyDeleteThat is just adorable. I would typically gravitate to paper piecing over appliqué, but that appliquéd umbrella is just adorable that I'd be willing to make the attempt! Great job.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute design, Cheryl! I love those big beach umbrellas.
ReplyDeleteCute design! Both blocks look fabulous, I love the bright colours :)

Super cute umbrella design! I had the privilege of designing the Row for Fabrics and Friends Quilt Shop, IN - galoshes, bare feet splashing in water.
