Forced Vacation from Quilting

So I went roller skating with my two little ones yesterday afternoon and had a great time ... until I fell.  I caught myself with my left hand and instantly I knew I had done something very wrong to it.  A fun trip to the local urgent care and I now have a temporary cast from my finger tips to past my elbow for my broken wrist and a orthopedic doctor visit scheduled this week.

Luckily it is a very small fracture and a compression type (so the ones are still nicely aligned) and it is my left wrist (I am a righty).  I am in virtually no pain and am just trying how to figure out how to do all of the normal stuff like butter bread, open jars, and button pants with one hand.  It is almost impossible to wash dishes one handed so there is a positive side to all of this :)

So I will be on a bit of a quilting holiday for the next 6-8 weeks.  Because I can not actually quilt, I am going to use these next 6-8 weeks to write up some new patterns, organize all of my files on the computer, and start working on the mystery quilt design for next year.  I am also going to have my sewing machine yearly maintenance done at this time (I am a few months late on that).

I will still have plenty to post on the blog, just typing with one hand.  I will have a few finishes to show that I have not blogged about yet, a bunch of Craftsy class reviews, some more EQ7 tutorials, and I am going to try to write a blog post series about pattern writing that has been on my list to do for months.

Have a great week!
Cheryl

  4. Oh my, you poor thing. I sprained my wrist many years ago at the ice rink (I am an accomplished skater!)
    The sprain was bad enough.
I know you are a crazy busy momma and always liking to do things and multitask, so I understand your absolute disappointment. Yes, lucky it was your left.
You will need helpers -- wear pants with elastic,
I am an olden nurse, so my at the moment advice (unsolicited of course lol) is to rest so that the tendons have a chance to settle down, and elevate.
Get your graph paper out, and lay down on the couch.
Put the whole house full to work :-D♥️

  7. The picture must be reversed since it appears to be your right hand in the cast. So sorry you broke your wrist while having fun with the kids, but if you subscribe to the rule that everything happens for a reason, then maybe you were meant to have this forced vacation from quilting. It sounds like you are taking it all in stride, but I hope the time away from your machine goes quickly for you. lv2bquilting2@comcast.net

  8. That is awful. I've been through a similar situation, but with my left arm out of commission for about 3 months, and I'm a lefty. And if this makes you feel slightly better, I'm happy to share this story with you. A very good friend of mine broke both wrists in a fall back in August, had to have surgery, and the casts will come off soon. She is going to have lots of OT.

Cheryl, my thoughts are with you. Doesn't it almost make you want to insure your hands? I hope you have a speedy recovery, and all goes smoothly with no pain. Healing x's and o's

  13. Ohh no!!! When I was young I went roller skating and sprained my wrist trying to catch myself. I decided I wasn't meant to move like that. So I avoided wheels on my feet ever since.

I hope you feel better soon!!!

  14. Oh my! It's unfortunate that we don't "bounce" like we used to in our younger years. Sorry you have to set aside quilting but I suspect this time will allow you to get caught up on other tasks and your creative energy will be bubbling over when you are ready to sew again. Best wishes for a quick recovery!

  15. You have been very unfortunate, but you sound very organized in how to spend your non quilting time! Sending healing thoughts your way!

  16. Hope you recover quickly! Sounds like you already have plans to make the best of it. Best wishes!!

  20. It sounds like you actually have a lot of quilting related things to keep you really busy. I hope you heal quickly and have a productive writing / organizing period.

  22. So sorry about your arm! It's great that you are being positive and plan to be productive away from the sewing machine.

  25. Yikes! That's awful! I'm glad to hear you're not in pain though, and that you're able to see the positives ;). I'll be looking forward to that pattern writing series.

  26. Ouch...hope you are feeling better soon. Too bad about the quilting, but it sounds like you have a lot to keep you busy. Take it easy.

  27. I felt so bad for you when I saw this photo on instagram. Hoping the time flies by soon and that the orthopedic doctor visit goes well.

  28. Ouch! Sorry to hear this, Cheryl. Sounds like your plan B and such a positive attitude will make those weeks fly by. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  29. So sorry for your accident. It sounds like you are making the best of it and will get some things accomplished sooner rather than later because of your fall. Speedy recovery to you.

  30. My photo is reversed, too, as it shows your right wrist/arm in a sling. From experience I can suggest you take care of yourself. Don't think you can do something the doctor has told you not to do. Go to physical therapy and do the exercises. You're young and you'll heal fast but what you don't take care of now may re-visit you in twenty or more years. Use this time to do something you wouldn't ordinarily have time to do.

  31. what a nasty fall and how tough not being able to stitch for so long, the housework I would gladly opt out of but not the stitching. Getting dressed, bathing etc will not be easy, underwear might be a bit of a battle. Best of luck with the pattern writing etc

  32. Cheryl, so sorry to hear about your fall! I feel your pain. I broke my left thumb and my collar bone in March and had the left thumb in a splint and the right arm in a sling, completely useless -- I couldn't even type. Nothing makes you want to sew more than having your arms taken away!! Is your hair still long like your profile picture? The hardest thing for me was that I couldn't make a pony tail with one hand and my husband's attempt at a pony tail looked like a pony tail that was out late partying and passed out in a gutter... I'm glad you're able to work on your patterns and get your machines in for service while you're recuperating. Hope you feel better soon!

  33. Ouch. On your list of to do's please add REST. That bone needs some healing time. Rest, elevate and do whatever the physical therapist tells you to do. Fast healing!

  34. Oh you are very upbeat . I'd be looking for sympathy all round . Take it easy and heal up

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh, wow this sounds painful. It sounds like you have a list of things to keep you busy. Be sure to take it easy as well. I would say yeah to not having to do dishes, but my first concern would be how to wash my own hair with one hand. Hope the kids take it easy on you and find ways to help.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I hope you heal quickly!! At least you did it while doing something fun, instead of performing some sort of grown up un-fun task. And is was your not-dominant hand.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So sorry to see that you hurt yourself. I'm excited to see the output of the list of things you have to work on, but remember to take care of yourself and rest!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh man, I'd be trying to figure out a way to sew one-handed--I actually kind of had to do that last winter when I sliced a chunk out of each nail on 2 fingers on my left hand, right down to the skin below, gross. Great that you're in no pain! My nail injuries were extremely painful. Funny how many activities we take for granted too, typing, doing up pants! Glad you have sewing-related stuff to keep you busy...speaking of next year's mystery....I need to do sewing step 2 yet for this year's!

  39. I am relieved to hear that it is a small fracture. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Cheryl!

  40. Oh - I am sorry about your fracture. On the other hand (like my pun?) you have a TON of things to do. What a list! Yeah, I like that getting out of washing dishes.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Look at you looking on the bright side of a fracture. I hope you recover quickly. I'm looking forward to your pattern writing posts.

  42. Ouch!!! Take care and enjoy the forced vacation from actual sewing.

  43. Oh no! I hope you have a quick recovery. It sounds like you have a really great outlook on his challenging situation.

  44. Oh Dear! that is unfortunate to have broken your wrist. Yikes! I can just imagine how it would not be something you would want to push the limits on. I'm glad it wasn't a horrifying type of break. It sure sounds like you have worked out how to make the best of things. I really admire your positive, "can do" spirit Cheryl! Be very careful and take good care of yourself so you can heal quickly and well!

  45. Oh no! It would probably take a broken arm to force me to get my machine in for maintenance too. I'm glad you're making the best of it and I look forward to your tips and tutorials! Sending you best wishes for a speedy recovery!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh your poor thing! Forced vacations are not good, but it sounds like you'll have plenty to keep you busy. And a vacation from dishes is never a bad thing. :-)

  47. Oh no! So sorry to hear Cheryl, but I am relieved you are not in pain... big hugs!
