Scrappy Tiles Pattern Question

Many, many, many moons ago I finished my Scrappy Tiles Quilt.  Some quilters have asked for the pattern and I have finally finished the draft of the pattern.  It is a easy pattern that creates a fun random look using a layer cake or scraps.

Not being a graphic designer, I had a question regarding the front cover of the pattern.  What information do you like to see on the front cover?  What do you not like about some pattern covers?  I have worked up three possible quilt covers attached below and would love your thoughts on them.  In particular, I would love to know which cover (A, B, or C) is your favorite and why?

A.

B.

C.

As thanks, I am giving away a prize to one comment (anywhere in the world) of one Meadow Mist Designs pattern (see etsy for list) and the Scrappy Tiles pattern when it is released (hopefully 5-6 weeks from now).  The giveaway will run from today until September 5th.

Note: If you are a no-reply blogger then please include your e-mail address. If I can not reach you, you can not win.

Thank you so, so much for your input and help!

I am also looking for pattern testers so if you would like to help by proofreading, making a block, or making a quilt let me know and I will be forever grateful!  (I should have another 2-3 patterns in the next month or two ready for testing so if you would like to test but this pattern is not for you, just let me know and I will add you to the pattern testers list for future quilts.)

  1. I like C the best. And I think you have all the pertinent information on the front. The front is really just supposed to intrigue you enough to flip it over to the back and find more information. Its a cute quilt. :D

  2. Love the quilt. I like cover A the best. I think the quilt stands out better against the light background & the tilted display is simply more interesting than the straight on ones. But you're still showing most of the quilt - I hate it when a quilt magazine only shows the actual quilt scrunched up across a couch. Thanks.

  3. I like cover B the best.I Love the quilt!!
    Thanks.

  4. I definitely prefer option A because it looks the most professional. B looks "homemade" and C looks like a blog post rather than a pattern package. One additional comment - You have several font styles, especially your Meadow Mist logo and the Scrappy Tiles title. It would be better to use fewer, more consistent fonts. Perhaps you can experiment with something that will work both for your logo on an ongoing basis and for various pattern titles, no matter the style of the quilt.

  5. Rosemary B here:
I love this. I want to make a zillion of these in different colors. I have way too much fabric and ready to go.
I like cover C the best, it includes the lovely wood backdrop and natural setting.
I would love to win this pattern!!

  6. I like the colors in A, but I don't like the quilt being diagonal.

  7. My favorite is C, I like the backdrop and outdoor setting.

  8. I really like all three designs, but I think the third one is my favorite. I like the look of the fence, and especially the grass at the bottom. Great job. I would love to make this quilt. :)

  9. I like either A or C. I think B has the look of patterns that were produced ten years ago, when things were somewhat more homemade. I might subtly expect a more professional project from A & C.

I think you have included just the right amount of info on the cover. It tells me that I have what is needed or can buy the layer cake I've been eyeing, so right off the bat it pulls me in. I'll turn to the back cover to get the rest of the info I need.

As another commenter noted, you might want to consider whether to use so many fonts. Your Meadow Mist logo has a pretty, distinctive font and you may want to either stick with that or not distract from it. You have a good look so you should make the most of it.

Thanks for including us in this part of the process. It's fun to be asked to consult. :)

  10. I like C - the fence setting is perfect!!

  11. A best...I like the light background

  12. A or C- all I want to know on the cover is what sizes it can be made into and who makes it! Thanks for the chance to win-- this is very similar to something I had in mind to make for my son (sort of eye spy, sort of a collage of his favorites, but with different size pieces to work with the different fabric scales)-- thanks for doing the hard work for me! 13. Oh, that is tough! I like all three designs for all different reasons. I think A and C are my favorite. But I think you are good to go with YOUR favorite. Since you described on the front, the pattern makes various sizes, it is assumed finished sizes would be listed on the back along with the fabric requirements. I have to disagree about the variety of the fonts on the front. As long as you keep your logo font a bit smaller then the rest, it is easily branded and all your fonts are very easy to read. I always look for a great photo and presentation and, in my opinion, you have it. Great job Cheryl! ~Shari

  14. I like C. It seems more modern, and I think I'm drawn to the background- I can see it hanging on my OWN fence. I've never tested a pattern, but I'd be up for the challenge! Let me know if you're still looking for someone. :)

  15. I like C. It looks professional and personal. I like the info you have on the front too. Lovely pattern!

  16. C really shows off the quilt. It adds interest without taking away from the quilt.

  17. I like 'C' the best. The design of the cover draws me in and makes me want to get more info on the quilt. I'd be happy to pattern test - I have a layer cake I've been wondering what to do with. :)

  18. I like A the best. I think the simple background emphasizes the beauty of a very lovely quilt. To me , the dark, rustic fence detracts from the "sweetness" of the quilt colors.

  19. Cheryl, I love cover A. It's cleaner and let's the quilt be the star of the show. And my other reason for chosing A is I'm just down right frugal...it would use less ink when printing out the pdf pattern. Either one, it's a winner!

  20. I think I am in the minority as I like B the best! When I looked at all three, it was the one that my eyes trained on to see the quilt and read the information most easily and quickest. The quilt is nicely framed with the dark wooden fence background, but your logo still stands out well, unlike in C. A actually distracted me more from the quilt and information as I was looking at the colors, dots, diagnal lines and fade out corner of the quilt, although it did complement the colors in the quilt very well. sarah@forrussia.org

  21. I like C but it really is a hard desicion.

  22. I like cover B. It's simple, and it highlights your beautiful quilt.

  23. I like A best - don't know why, just appeals to me valerie.boudier@ntlworld.com

  24. I love cover C - the setting is beautiful. I think you've got all the information I would look for on a cover. The only thing I would suggest you consider changing is the font you used for the description. This one reminds me a little too much of the Comic font.

  25. I choose C. I would definatly select it from a group while pattern shopping. I also like that you offer lap and baby sizes. I am a beginner quilter and enjoy the smaller projects.
I would love to make a block too !

  26. I like A the best. Putting the quilt on the diagonal, I think, Makes it stand out from the rest. I think your array of fonts is just fine. I didn't find them distracting at all.
I would be glad to be a pattern tester also.

  27. Hi! I would choose C. I like the brown background of the fence.
I Would love to win a pattern.

  28. I like the layout of B best because the white background frames the quilt nicely. I might make the photo slightly larger on B. I like the layout of A as well but would lighten the cream up some and change the pink top to something more neutral like tan.

  29. I like A with B as a strong second choice. What lovely fabrics you choose to make the quilt too!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like C, I like the fence in the background. It makes the quilt pop just a bit more than the other designs.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like option C with A as a very close second. I like that you list which precut will work for your pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like A best. In my opinion it is the most professional, and you can change up the colour the the pink band to match each new pattern you make (does that make sense?), so I think it works well branding-wise.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I like C the best just because it's the most aesthetically pleasing to me.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love C...because the cover is a picture I would take...or notice first. It is "Homey" to me. Loooov ethe Quilt for sure! & also..like knowing what size the pattern makes too..without hunting for the info. Grrrreat job all around! :)

  35. Cover C is the one that will catch the eye! I like the darker background and it's just so friendly looking. Makes me want to pick it up and open it! Oh, I'd love to sew up some scrappy quilts!

    ReplyDelete
  36. C is the prettiest, but B would be best if it is a download that people have to print out themselves :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I prefer C. I also have been doing some pattern testing. If you would like some help, you can email me at dahlgren0609 at gmail dot com. Love testing patterns, isn't that goofy.

  38. The "C" pattern cover is my favorite. It is easy to read; it provides your quilt with a high contrast background; the setting is "down to earth", making a person want to use it in real life!
Kudos on publishing a new pattern!

  39. I like C. The information needed (size and that it's layer-cake friendly) is right there. I prefer the picture too, the background adds to it somehow.

I'd be happy to proof read for you. I'm an ex-English teacher who is driven mad by wrongly used apostrophes so I'd be happy to help (not saying you do use them wrongly!). I would also be happy to pattern test blocks, but couldn't manage a full quilt as I work full time and sewing time is limited.

  40. I like C. This lovely quilt stands out against the dark background much better in this view. I like that you've included the fact that this quilt can be made with a layer cake or scraps. When making a baby quilt or lap throw I like to know the smallest amount of fabric I can use.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I like Design C the best as well. Design B is too white and stark. Design A is okay, but would look better with the picture from B on it. However, C is still my favorite because it is easy to read and organic looking.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I like Design C best, because I like seeing quilts in a real environment, not against a solid background.

    ReplyDelete
  43. C because I like the quilt "square" on the picture, and I like all the greenery in the background.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like option A the best, but I would change the background to white and straighten the quilt. Then, I think, it would be perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love this pattern...and I have just the right fabric to get going on 'the first one'. I prefer your A because I think it appears more professional....as in perfect for a pattern package. I like the others because an old fence is always good behind a brightly colored quilt to me. But as I said, I very much look forward to the pattern and getting to begin on a new adventure.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm torn between A and C. I like the tilt on A and the photo background on C. Either would inspire me to pick up the pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I like "C" the best, maybe the dark background makes it stand out more, it's beautiful. I have always wanted to make a quilt like this, it's on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing.

  48. I like option "C" the best. You have enough information on the front to cause interest. I like the title font and have no problem with your logo being a different font because it is consistent on all your items. Love the picture-most natural!

  49. I like option "C" the best - the dark background makes the quilt just pop!!
