Day 5 - Just Two Charm Pack Quilts - Book Hop

 Welcome to the fifth day of the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book hop and the start to the second half of the hop!

DIAGONAL JOY

The 9th quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is the Diagonal Joy pattern.  The main version of the design was pieced and quilted by Cindy C.  I really love the background color for this version (Bella Solids in Stone) as it has the look of linen without the difficulties of sewing with linen.  The charm squares are each cut into 2 1/2" squares so in addition to this quilt being charm pack friendly, it can also be made with mini charm packs, leftover jelly roll bits, and smaller scraps.  The white fabric (the fabric A) forms the fun bowties on the diagonal.

The alternate version of Diagonal Joy was pieced by me and quilted by Johellen George.  The prints for this version were from a super old collection called Oh Deer by MoMo for Moda Fabrics.  I had made one of my first quilt patterns with the collection (On a "Jelly" Roll) and had some left over pieces of the jelly roll strips from all of those years ago.

The leftover strips were not enough to make the Diagonal Joy quilt so I was planning on bringing in some of my scraps and solids to have enough fabric when I figured I would do a quick search for the fabric on Etsy.  I was so surprised to see a charm pack of this really old collection on sale.  I purchased it really quickly and was able to put them into this quilt.

PROCESS FLOW

The 10th quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is Process Flow which is a twist on a classic zipper block.  This is one of the quicker and easier to piece quilt tops as there are no triangles and no seams to match. This design could also work with jelly roll strips (2 1/2" wide strips).  

I pieced this main version of the quilt and the Bear Creek Quilting Company quilted it.  I used the PB&J collection by Basic Gray for Moda fabric for the prints.  I had a layer cake of the collection so I was able to make this quilt and still have enough fabric to make another design.

The alternate version of Process Flow was pieced and quilted by Darleen S. and used some fun Tula Pink prints set on white and light pink.  I really like how the different background colors between the main (dark blue) and alternative (light pink) versions impact how the quilt looks.  The alternate version has a much more subtle and lower contrast background making the print portions stand out more.

GROWING VINES

The seventh quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is the Growing Vines pattern.  I love making half-square triangles so I really enjoyed making this quilt.  One thing fun with the main version of Growing Vines is that the charm pack is made up of solids (Driftless Coordinates by Anna Graham for Robert Kaufman) and the fabric A is the brown gingham. Most of the quilts in the book have prints as the charm pack and a solid or solid-like fabric as fabric A so it was fun to do this reversal.  I pieced the quilt top and the Bear Creek Quilting Company did the quilting.

The alternate version of Growing Vines was pieced and quilted by Cindy C.  For this version, I picked out some Nantucket Summer charm packs by Camille Roskelley for Moda and paired them with a white background and dark green fabric A.  I really like how the prints are mostly greens and blues which fit in well with the quilt looking like vines. 

STAR RAYS

The eighth quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is Star Rays.  Stars have always been one of my favorite design elements in quilting so I had to include some in this book :)  I gave the stars a little twist by putting them in rows and staggering the stars so that in some of the are cut off by the side of the quilt.

The main version of Star Rays was pieced by me and quilted by the Bear Creek Quilting Company and I used the Sunburst collection by Art Gallery Studios against the perfect blue (Pure Solids in Ocean) and white.

The alternate version of Star Rays was pieced by Dale H. and quilted by the Carolina Quilt Studio in such an awesome quilting design. This quilt actually used two different charm packs put together. Both charm packs (Elixir and Camellia) were by the same designer, Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society. This is a great tip for combining charm packs. Designers tend to repeat colors and have their collections work well with each other so if you have a single charm pack you would want to use, look at the designer's newer collections because they will probably pair well (and have the added bonus or even more print variety).

Day 3 - Just Two Charm Pack Quilts - Book Hop

SOMERVILLE CIRCLE

The fifth quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is the Somerville Circle pattern.  I really like this classic circle look re-imagined as a charm pack friendly design.  The quilt gets its name from the Somerville traffic circle in New Jersey near where I grew up.  It was a crazy traffic circle where three major highways came together.  We tried to avoid it, but it was basically the only way of getting to the mall growing up.

For the main version of Somerville Circle, I pieced the quilt top using red scraps from Bonnie and Camille for Moda against white fabric A and a light pink background.  There are small pieces in this quilt, but each charm square is made into mini strip sets which make the piecing sew together much quicker and more accurate. The Bear Creek Quilting Company quilted large spiral swirls on the quilt.

The alternate version of Somerville Circle was pieced and quilted by Yvonne of Quilting Jetgirl.  She used Tula Pink's rainbow blender line called True Colors for FreeSpirit with a white print fabric and a purple/pink background. 

Instead of distributing the various print colors randomly throughout the design, Yvonne arranged them in a rainbow orientation.  This definitely took some additional planning, but the result is spectacular!  Yvonne finished the quilt with stipple and loop quilt designs and a striped binding.

I had so much fun making my Somerville Circle quilt that when I decided to make a quilt from the book as a giveaway when the book first launched, I decided to make another.  For this version I used deeper purple/magnetas with white and purple solids.

MORE FISHIES

The sixth quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is More Fishies.  My previous book, Just One Charm Pack Quilts, had a pattern in it called Fishies. It was one of the most popular patterns from the book so I had to come up with More Fishies :)  

Fishies Quilt from Just One Charm Pack Quilts

More Fishies has a different style fish (and more of them) to create a larger throw size quilt.  I used the same Breeze collection by Zen Chic for Moda as the Fishies quilt and paired it with a lime green fabric A and a navy background.  I pieced the quilt top and the Bear Creek Quilting Company used this perfect wave-like design for the quilting.

The alternate version of More Fishies in the book was pieced by Cindy K. and quilted by Johellen George.  Instead of using a charm pack, I created my own charm pack by cutting up scraps and fat quarters of navy prints.  I paired these with an orange print for fabric A and a light blue background.  I love how the fish are all swimming in different directions :)

Liz of Savor Every Stitch created a version of More Fishies for the hop. She is one of the most amazing quilters I have ever met (I might have squealed in delight when I saw the quilt she made). LOVERS LANE

The third quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is the Lovers Lane pattern.  I sewed this quilt top and the Bear Creek Quilting Company quilted it.  From my previous book, Just One Charm Pack Quilts, I had one charm of Clementine by Melody Miller for Ruby Star Society.  (You can see the Circus Stars quilt using Clementine).

Because I only had a single charm pack, I used my stash to expand the charm pack into two.  The beginning of the book has a section on making your own charm pack (or expanding on a single pack) from a color or fabric inspiration.

The alternate version of Lovers Lane was pieced by Sandra H. and quilted by Johellen George. This second version used Karen Lewis's Handstitched collection for Figo Fabrics. Because most of the prints in this collection were lighter in value, I paired them with a medium gray background fabric and a navy fabric A.

Selwyn K. of Colorado Quilt Engineer created a version of Lovers Lane for the hop. I love how she paired the gold and magenta prints with the green additional fabric and chose the lighter gray for the background. Check out her quilting too! MORNING FLOWER PATCH

The fourth quilt in the Just Two Charm Pack Quilts book is Morning Flower Patch.  This quilt design is a fun combination of two alternating blocks: a classic nine-patch block and a plus sign block.  The design reminded me of a garden trellis so that is how the quilt earned its name.

The prints in this quilt are 2 ½" square so this quilt is perfect for not only charm packs, but mini charm packs, leftover bits of jelly rolls, and smaller scraps work great too.

The main version of Morning Flower Patch was pieced by Dana B. and myself and was quilted by the Bear Creek Quilting Company.  The dark gray (Confetti Cotton in Charcoal by Riley Blake) makes the Enchanted Meadow prints by Beverly McCullough for Riley Blake and the white fabric pop :)

The alternate version of Morning Flower Patch has the reverse coloration compared to the main version, with a charcoal fabric A and a white background.  Instead of a charm pack, I used a variety of Kona Cotton solid scraps in a bunch of bright, fun colors.  I pieced the quilt top and Johellen George used the perfect flower design for the quilting.

Selwyn K. of Colorado Quilt Engineer created a version of Morning Flower Patch for the hop.  Here is just a sneak peek, hop over to Selwyn's IG account to see the finished quilt.  I love how she changed up the design a little by making the charm pack out of a variety of navy prints and adding a gold center to each of the nine-patch blocks.
