The office I work in has a temperature of very cold to frigid year round, but outside of the office South Carolina can get quite toasty in the summer. The only solution I have found is to layer my clothes so I don't freeze or bake to death. I have tons of cardigans to wear over short sleeved or sleeve-less tops.
I have been wanting to add some more tops to my wardrobe and thought that maybe I could make some and thought the Gemma shirt would it the bill. I am a fan of Made by Rae, having made a couple of Geranium dresses for my daughter and a Washi dress for me.
The top really did go together super quickly. The most time consuming part was the bias binding on the neck and arm holes (and there are even options to not use the bias tape but I think that it really adds a nice detail).
After I had my first Gemma top complete, I was already hunting through my stash for fabric to make another...so you may be seeing a few more Gemma shirts on the blog in the next few months :)
Sorry about the pictures in this post. My 9 year old was the photographer and I was talking to him while he was taking pictures. So my face in every (in-focus, usable) picture had this super weird expression, hence the cropping of my head :)

A great finish. You look fabulous in it too!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute top and a great finish. Funny about the head shots but hey...he got the top pretty well!!!
ReplyDeleteI need to check out this pattern for myself! I've been needing a boost to my wardrobe as well, and this looks great! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLooks great, Cheryl! I really want to sew more clothes too and I may need to look at that pattern. Thanks for letting me know it's easy even if you don't know a lot about garment sewing.
ReplyDeleteI so know what you mean about office spaces being super cold to frigid and having it be baking hot outside! Layering is a great solution and the top looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I love Made by Rae patterns. I still haven't made my Washi dress yet, but I have the pattern pieces cut out for the Isla top.
ReplyDeleteReally cute, Cheryl! Great job!
ReplyDeleteLayers are a must for me too! The top is really cute! I've been wanting to try sewing clothing, this may be the simple piece that I might be able to handle! Well done and in another year...your photographer will be runway ready!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute on you! I have the exact same problem at work - the air conditioning is on super cold all summer long and then you melt when you go outside. Did you use quilting cotton for your top? Because it falls so nicely on you!
ReplyDeleteOoh...I love this! Ive been wondering about this pattern. You've sold me on it. I've been attempting to sew my wardrobe. It's very slow going. Thanks for the inspiration!!! Also, glad to hear you still have a head. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love that top. Of course the fabric is great. I still have a top just like this I bought and wore so much the piping around the armholes is threadbare. I've been hoping to find a pattern to make it with pretty, new fabric. The heat and air conditioning issue seems to happen in many offices. I bring layers all the time.
ReplyDeleteIs it called a Gemma top? Never heard of that before - thanks for sharing!!
I love the top and the binding is really the right finish for the neck and armholes. So glad you did that. Is the fabric a cotton woven or a knit. Either way it looks just great. I'd prefer to have my head cut off in photos, but not everyone does!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute! You did a really nice job and the top looks great on you! Congrats on venturing into the world of garment making. I think it would be fun to do but haven't taken the leap yet. :)
ReplyDeleteA great finish! I love the bias binding. It adds so much more interest and was definitely worth the time. I wouldn't guess you haven't done much garment sewing. To me it looks perfect :)
ReplyDeleteVery cute! A great base for a layered look. I love that arrow fabric, I have some of it. It was supposed to get used for Bejeweled, but it didn't work as well with the other fabrics.
ReplyDeleteIs this cotton lawn or quilting cotton? It looks great! And I feel for you with short photographers, for my daughter I usually get her to stand far enough back that I can crop the picture, otherwise I end up with no head.
ReplyDeleteA pretty top, Cheryl! I love that you chose to go with the bias tape option for finishing, it may be more work, but it is such fun design detail to include. Love it!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I started out sewing clothes first, so for me my sewing journey has taken the exact opposite twists and turns from a lot of you lovely ladies!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great top Cheryl. I love it made with this print.
