Work in Progress - Ma Maison

You may remember the lap sized quilt and pattern I made for the Moda Bake Shop quilt back in December 2015 called Ma Maison.

Over the past few months, I have received numerous questions on how to make the quilt in different sizes, so I have decided to write a full pattern for the quilt design all the way from baby size up to king size.  I am also remaking the quilt in some more "me" colors.

I started my new version of Ma Maison with a jelly roll of Denyse Schmidt's Shelburne Falls line.  I love its vintage, scrappy feel.

The blocks came together quickly and easily.

The toughest part was figuring out what I should use for the sashing.  I started with a Kona white and then tried yellows, blues, low volume, and almost everything in between (I made a but of a mess of my sewing room in the process).  I finally settled my initial Kona white because I felt that the other colors and prints competed with the blocks. too much.

The quilt top is now basted and in the "ready to quilt" pile.  Hopefully, I will get it quilted and the full pattern finished soon.

I am linking up to Let's Bee Social @ Sew Fresh QuiltsNeedle and Thread Thursday @ My Quilt Infatuation, and WIP Wednesday @ Freshly PiecedLink a Finish Friday.

  1. Picking a complimentary color to work with a great line of prints can be really tricky. I know what you mean about the colors competing too much. The quilt top looks great, and how awesome to be expanding the design out so much!

  2. Looks great in Shelburne Falls with such a great mix of lights/darks and variety in prints. White was a great choice for the sashing!

  4. This is a great pattern to adapt to multiple sizes! I have done a few MBS quilts and two of them would be easy to size up or down, but the one I am currently working on would need 6 or more charm packs for a twin size! At a certain point, you have to consider sizing up your block and not just the number of blocks! :)

  5. First, you can't go wrong with any Denyse Schmidt fabric! I remember this quilt and it will be so cool to see it in a different fabric!

  6. This looks just great with the Denyse Schmidt fabrics and will make for a great pattern with multiple sizes. I can just imagine your sewing room as your pulled lots of different sash fabrics to try as I've been there myself. The white ended up being a good choice. It allows the print fabrics to take center stage.

  7. I've had this pattern in my "to make someday" pile. I like seeing it in these colors. As far as the sashing goes, you can never go wrong with white or black in my opinion.

  11. I think the white is a good choice, it works well. I am excited about the different sizes, because I have a couple of jelly rolls and I just can't figure out what to do with them and this would be perfect.
